Back to school = back to the chaos. 🎒📚 And if you're a working parent, you already know.

Natalie is a VCA Associate and a single mom of three boys. Sports, homework, last-minute projects... she handles it all because her schedule at VCA gives her the flexibility to actually be there.

Four 10-hour shifts. Done by 3:30pm. Home for what matters. 🏠❤️

This back-to-school season, we're proud to support the working parents who show up for their patients AND their family every single day. 🐾

Meet Shug (like "Sugar"), a 12yr old male/neutered Domestic Short Hair. Shug went to VCA West Coast Specialty and Emergency Animal Hospital's Neurology team after his family noticed progressive weakness in his back legs. What started as a stiff left hind leg gradually affected both legs over the course of several weeks, until he could no longer stand on his own.
An MRI revealed a spinal meningioma, a benign tumor arising from the tissues surrounding the spinal cord. Surgical intervention was recommended as the treatment of choice in hopes to improve his current neurologic deficits and to stop further worsening in the near future. The Neurology team performed surgery to remove the mass with a dorsal laminectomy.
Just four weeks later, Shug returned for his recheck with an incredible transformation. He was running, jumping, and back to being his normal self. He showed no signs of pain and only slight incoordination. He is once again enjoying time exploring his favorite spots in the backyard.

We couldn’t be happier to see this handsome boy back on all four paws! Let's show Shug some love in the comments with 😻😻😻

On Wednesdays, Dr. Joseph Masciana, DVM, DACVECC, wears pink 💗

Dr. Masciana is a Veterinary Specialist in Emergency & Critical Care and the Intern Director at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital. His teaching style starts with trust: giving the team opportunities to think through cases, ask questions, and build confidence while knowing support is there when they need it.

It’s an approach that reflects how we think about learning at VCA. Our veterinary mentorship and veterinary internship programs combine hands-on clinical experience with guidance from experienced veterinary professionals, creating opportunities to learn, practice, and grow every day.

Developing great veterinarians takes more than teaching medicine. It takes people like Dr. Masciana who are invested in helping others become the doctors they want to be.

🐶 Follow you everywhere
🐱 Act completely unbothered
🐶 Bark at every boom

Day 12 of our 12 Days of Pet Health: Start the New Year Right
A fresh year is the perfect time to set your pet up for a healthy start. Preventive care helps catch issues early, supports long term wellness, and keeps your pet feeling their best. Here are a few ways to begin the new year on the right paw:
🩺 Schedule a wellness exam: Regular checkups help monitor your pet’s overall health and catch small concerns before they become bigger ones.
🦷 Plan a dental checkup: Dental health affects more than just fresh breath. A dental exam can help prevent discomfort and support whole body wellness.
🔬 Consider preventive screenings: Bloodwork, parasite testing, and age appropriate screenings give a clear picture of your pet’s health and help guide personalized care.
Starting the new year with proactive care is a simple way to keep your pet happy, healthy, and by your side for years to come. https://vcahospitals.com/iselin

Day 11 of our 12 Days of Pet Health: Year End Medication Check
As the year winds down, it is a great time to make sure your pet is up to date on the medications that keep them healthy and protected. A quick review now can help avoid any gaps in care during the busy holiday season. Here are a few things to check:
💊 Keep medications on hand: This time of year gets busy, so it is helpful to check that you have the next doses of your pet’s medications ready.
🦟 Keep flea and tick protection going: Parasites are still active in many areas through winter, so staying consistent is important.
❤️ Continue heartworm prevention: Heartworm preventives should be given year round. Now is a good time to confirm you have doses ready heading into the new year.
Our home delivery and in-hospital pharmacy make it easy to stay on track. If you need refills or have questions about your pet’s medications, our team is here to help. https://vcahospitals.com/iselin
