Tobasco had an okay day. He didnā€™t throw up at all overnight last night which was a definite win. He did throw up once after breakfast and once this evening though. Heā€™s eating a lot better now. Heā€™s also grooming which is a sign that he is feeling a little better. I dropped off a stool sample but havenā€™t heard back about it yet. I am expecting it to be negative for everything given that Franks is completely fine, and they both have perfect p**p.

Iā€™m beginning to wonder if he just wasnā€™t really eating at the shelter. Maybe the vomiting is his body adjusting to eating again and/or from stress. He is still pretty low energy and not interested in playing. I think heā€™s just weak from how much weight he lost. He gets really irritated with his brother who wants to play and wrestle all the time. Hopefully heā€™ll feel strong enough soon to fight back. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Iā€™d love to let them out of the pen because Franks is literally bouncing off the walls. Once we have a couple of vomit free days, Iā€™ll let them have the room.

NEW FOSTERS. šŸ’™

Meet Franks and Tobasco. I donā€™t know which one is which, so Iā€™m probably just going to have to randomly decide. These boys are here for some socialization before adoption. If all goes well, theyā€™ll only be here for a couple of weeks.

The shorthaired one is hissy. However, he is very toy motivated. When Iā€™m not in the pen, he is a little maniac. I think heā€™ll come around pretty quickly. I was petting him while he was sleeping, and he definitely liked it.

The fluffy one doesnā€™t seem to be feeling well. He doesnā€™t have much of an appetite, isnā€™t very energetic, and has thrown up twice. If he hasnā€™t perked up by tomorrow or throws up again, Iā€™ll alert the shelter. He hasnā€™t hissed at me at all or put up any fight when Iā€™ve handled him. Not sure if thatā€™s because he doesnā€™t feel well or if heā€™s just not as spicy as his brother. He feels a little bony under all that fluff, as well. The other kitten is pretty stout.

Last update on Mama Scout and her kittens before I introduce some new friendsā€¦

I got confirmation today that it was Thin Mint and Savannah that passed away which is what I suspected. šŸ’” Returning this group when I did was definitely the right decision. The remaining kittens all developed very severe congestion to the point that they couldnā€™t nurse. They are still quite sick. All four kittens had to be separated from Mama Scoutā€¦ Samoa and Do-Si-Do first, then Toast and Tagalong. Two are being syringe/bottle fed, and two are being tube fed because of how bad their congestion is. Hopefully they will get better soon and make a full recovery. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Iā€™ll ask for another update the next time Iā€™m at the shelter and hopefully have some better news to share on them then.

I asked for an update yesterday, and Iā€™m sorry to share that two of Mama Scoutā€™s kittens didnā€™t make it. šŸŒˆ I was not told which two passed. To my knowledge, the remaining four are recovering and doing okay as of now. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

I wish they could, but this group wonā€™t be returning to me. Iā€™m thankful I was able to know them, even if only for a few days. Iā€™m thankful I was able to monitor them closely and get them more help right away. Iā€™m thankful for the other foster for stepping in to provide that help. Iā€™m thankful that the two who passed were able to experience some time in a home, even though it was far too brief. They were loved while they were here. They will be remembered. They mattered.

Iā€™m picking up new fosters on Monday, as there is no shortage of kittens needing out of the shelter this time of year. If I receive any more updates on Mama Scout and her kittens, I will share.

I wish I had a better update to share. I had to take Mama Scout and the kittens back to the shelter this afternoon. While Scoutā€™s URI symptoms have mostly cleared up, the kittensā€™ symptoms continue to worsen. They are now with a temporary foster who can provide around the clock bottle feedings, as needed, while they are sick.

Savannah had been inconsolable since last night. She cried nearly all night long. I finally got her to latch and drink a few milliliters of formula around 3:45 a.m. She slept for about 30 minutes after that, and then started screaming again. She wouldnā€™t latch before I started work this morning, but she ate 5 mL on my lunch break and 10 mL after I finished work and before we left for the shelter. Iā€™m glad she seems to have figured it out and hope that sheā€™ll continue eating well for the other foster. I hadnā€™t seen her nurse from Scout since Saturday, and her weight was plummeting.

Iā€™m very concerned about Toast, too. His URI symptoms are currently the most severe. His weight has also tanked since yesterday. He just doesnā€™t feel good at all.

Thin Mint is still active and maintaining weight, but she has a lot of nasal discharge. Itā€™s really scary given how tiny she is.

The other three are just doing okay right now. They are still nursing pretty well, but they arenā€™t gaining enough weight. Iā€™m worried their symptoms will get worse.

The kittens are starting on antibiotics and eye meds. Hopefully they will all overcome this. I hate not being able to be the one to help them, but I canā€™t give them the amount of care they need with my job. I wouldnā€™t have been able to leave them for 9+ hours tomorrow to go to work.

At this point, I donā€™t know if theyā€™ll return to me or not. I offered to take them back when they are feeling better and more stable, but itā€™s possible they might be moved to a different permanent foster who is able to continue bottle feeding for as long as needed.

Iā€™ll share if I get any updates this week. If I find out for sure that they wonā€™t be returning to me, Iā€™ll offer to take something else. They are bursting at the seams with kittens right now.

Cuddle puddle. šŸ„°

The kittens are sneezing a lot now. I really hope Mama Scoutā€™s antibiotic will help knock things out quickly for all of them. She seems to feel okay other than having really wet sneezes. She is playing with toys and is very sweet. Iā€™m trying not to spend too much time in the room though because she tends to stay with the babies more when Iā€™m not in there. When Iā€™m in the room, she wants to be with me and is less interested in being with them.

All the kittens stayed put overnightā€¦ for the most part. I was awoken around 4:30 a.m. to a screaming kitten. One of the tabbies was just outside the playpen. She probably wandered out and was nursing there. When mama got up, she was alone and got upset. I moved her back inside with her siblings, and she calmed right now.

Only one of the kittens had a good amount of weight gain overnight. The others lost a little or just maintained. Thin Mint is back down to 118 grams. If I donā€™t see any gains today, I will intervene and start offering a bottle.

ADOPTED! šŸŽ‰

Mama Mouse, Gus, Perla, and Jaq are all in their forever homes. Mouse went home a couple of weeks ago. The Mouselings went to their homes on Wednesday. It took a village to get this group there, but they all finally made it! šŸ 

Mouse and two other new mama cats were transferred from Indy Animal Care Services to IndyHumane on the same day back in mid-March. There were 11 kittens in total between the three litters. Of those 11 kittens, only five survivedā€¦ the three Mouselings, one from a litter of six (Biscotti, whose mama also spent time in the ICU), and one from a litter of two (the mama cat who took care of the Mouselings when Mouse was sick). These little lives are so fragile. Mama Mouse, Gus, Perla, and Jaq are very lucky to have all survived.

I am extremely grateful for everyone and everything that played a role in saving themā€¦ the amazing veterinarians and medical staff, the critical supportive care provided to Jaq and Gus by Kelsey (), all the medications provided by the shelter, the other mama cat that nursed the kittens when Mouse couldnā€™t, and all the food/supplies donations and words of support from our Instagram friends.

Iā€™ve been waiting 11 weeks to make this post. There were many days when I didnā€™t think it was going to happen. Thank you to everyone involved in making this post a reality, including their adopters. We did it! šŸ§”
