This morning, I refused service to a customer whose words were steeped in hate. She began with propaganda about how “we should send ‘them’ to their own countries,” proudly boasting that her family has been here for 200 years. I mentioned that my 9th great-grandfather was a patriot in the American Revolution, yet I am only a 3rd-generation German immigrant myself. America is built by immigrants—always has been.

Then she dropped a line that left me stunned: “It all started with the colored people.” When I asked what she meant, she confused the American Revolution with the Civil War, saying the North and South fought “to free the colored people.” I corrected her, and as she continued with her hateful rhetoric, I told her the only difference between Trump and Jim Jones is that Trump would have charged for the Kool-Aid—and she was still buying.

I then told her she was no longer welcome, and I would not be grooming her dog. As she left, I said I was sad she didn’t follow the true teachings of Christianity. She proudly declared, “I go to church every Sunday!” I responded, “Good for you for being a Convenient Christian—only following Christ’s teachings when it benefits you.”

I refuse to be a Convenient Christian. My faith tells me to treat others with love and compassion, not hate. I will not twist scripture or ignore its call to love just because it’s easier or more comfortable.

The Bible is clear:
• “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt.” – Leviticus 19:34
• “You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” – Exodus 22:21
• “And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.” – Deuteronomy 10:19
• “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” – Galatians 3:28

Sachi is a regular grooming and boarding client. She stayed with us not long ago. I was just nodding off when I felt eyes on me. In the dark I snapped some pictures to see what was going on. Sachi was just staring at me wanting bedtime cuddles.

Meet Thulsa. She is an 8-10’ Boa Constrictor who recently boarded with us while her owner was out of town. She has always been very docile and easy to handle, but always keep in mind she could easily harm us. We have strict safety protocols when handling her. Thulsa has a chronic respiratory problem that requires her to have nebulizer treatments daily for the rest of her life. Two people must be present just in case things go wrong. How does she get her medication? We can’t put a little facemask on her for 20-30 minutes. Her owner brings a latching storage tub he has connected a mouthpiece to. She goes in the tub, the lid is latched, then the nebulizer is turned on with meds. While having her treatment is our opportunity to clean and give her fresh water After she’s finished she goes back in her enclosure. We have 14 years of experience with exotic animals and are always happy to have her here!

Meet our new client Otto. He is a Virginia Opossum that came to us for a bath and nail trim. We don’t require vaccinations for them. Their body temperature is low enough that rabies can’t survive in their system. Indiana does require a permit to own though, so we do require a copy of the owner permit. We can also board opossums and stay on site with them just like we do for all of our overnight guests.

This little guy is still fairly new as a client. He’s super sweet, but very anxious. I try to spend as much time as possible hanging out with my anxious clients. We’ve been hanging out on the porch for a bit relaxing. He’s been pacing, whining to go in, and seeking pets and comfort from me. Now he is relaxing, enjoying laying on the electric blanket, leaning on my leg for security, while getting up for longer yard exploring jaunts. Just what I was looking for! He’s still afraid of the process, but is learning to trust me and that even if he doesn’t like something nothing will hurt him. I try my hardest to be as fear free as possible while still making them do things they would rather not do. Working this way definitely slows me down, but it’s so incredibly satisfying. Plus, as trust is built my job and the entire grooming process becomes easier and less stressful for the animals. I am notorious for assigning homework to owners of our more anxious clients. This dog is terrified of the noise from the clippers. His owners have taken my advice to run something similar near his head while slowly feeding high value treats that he only gets with this sound regularly between grooms. It could be an electric toothbrush or razor , you tube video of clippers, or even a clipper prank app. This should help him form a positive association with the scary noise. Time to get started. I’ll let you know later today in the comments how he did!

Boarding parrots get to hang out in staff living quarters. Parrots need lots of day time interaction. They do very well in our “home” environment. When not in the room with them we put on parrot tv to entertain them. Lucky birds board at All Creatures Great & Groomed!

UPDATE: New transport dates and locations included!!! Indiana spay neuter transport dates and locations for February 2025. To schedule your cat or dog for a surgery, please call our transport line at 317-675-0072 and leave a message. You can also visit our website at www.lowcostspayneuterindiana.org to complete an online submission form to start the appointment process. We do not transport for vaccines only; however, vaccinations can be done at the same time as a spay, neuter, or dental. We do not require an appointment for feral cats; therefore, you can bring up to 2 feral cats per day per person. Please keep in mind that for some transports we are booking out several months. Also, some locations have been temporarily postponed and some check-in or return times have changed. We look forward to caring for your pets!
