What does a seizure alert dog do?

At Medical Mutts, we specialize in scent training for seizure alert dogs, and we teach other organizations how to do this work. Dogs learn to recognize scent changes associated with their person’s seizures and communicate an alert through a trained behavior.

They can also learn response behaviors tailored to their person, such as:

• Pressing a button to call for help
• Helping roll their person onto their side for a safer recovery position
• Staying close, cuddling, or taking a trained position alongside, across, or behind their person
• Bringing a phone, magnet, medical bag, water, or another needed item when their person wakes
• Bracing to help their person get up from the floor

“He now alerts Alex before about 90% of her larger seizures. When he does, he follows his trained response: pressing a button, helping her onto her side, and cuddling close. That warning, and knowing Vader is there, has brought Alex and her family more peace of mind.”

Could your dog learn to alert you to a medical change, or help when you need support?

Medical Mutts specializes in medical-alert training, including seizure and blood-sugar alerts. Our work is informed by more than a decade of experience and research into how dogs detect changes associated with medical conditions.

In our Board & Train program, your dog trains with our professional team for about six months. We work on tasks tailored to your needs, along with the skills your dog needs to work safely and confidently in public. You don’t have to manage the intensive daily training alone.

Then you spend 10 days training with us to learn your dog’s signals, practice the tasks together, and prepare for the transition home. Our support continues after you leave.

You bring the dog you love. We bring the specialized training and guidance to help you build a working partnership.

Every dog and every person’s needs are different. We’ll assess whether the program is a good fit, and medical-alert reliability can vary.

We have five new faces at Medical Mutts! Welcome, Coraline and Bugsy from Indianapolis Animal Care Services, and Brock, Chloe, and Bandit from Animal Protection League of Indiana.

They’re in quarantine while we complete their medical testing and check for parasites and contagious infections. Once they’re cleared, they can join the program and begin training.

So far, they’ve shown us some of the qualities we look for: they’re friendly, confident, resilient, and eager to work for food. They’ll need about 6–8 months of full-time training before we know whether they’re suited to become service dogs. The work isn’t right for every dog; about one in three candidates makes it through.

We’re happy to have them here and grateful to both shelters for helping them get this chance. Say hello to Coraline, Bugsy, Brock, Chloe, and Bandit! 🐾

Come Meet Bella Mae tomorrow from 10-12!

This beautiful 72-pound Hound Mix is spunky, confident, and always up for a little adventure. One of her favorite things is long walks where she can put that amazing nose to work and sniff to her heart’s content!

With her friendly and funny demeanor, Bella Mae is sure to bring laughter and joy to your home. She’s independent yet brave, always ready to explore new places and meet new friends. Whether she’s wagging her tail at the park or lounging comfortably at home, Bella Mae’s charm is undeniable. This girl has so much personality packed into one big, lovable package. She’s ready for someone who will enjoy exploring the world with her, let her take her time sniffing all the good smells, and give her the forever home she deserves.

Bella Mae is 3 years old, spayed, and up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. Her adoption fee of $300 includes two private training sessions with one of our trainers to help her settle into her new home.

An Update on Alex and Vader 💛

Living with epilepsy can mean facing frightening seizures and never knowing when one might happen. That uncertainty can weigh on the whole family.

Vader came to Medical Mutts from Young-Williams Animal Center. After months of training, he was matched with Alexandra in Denver in December. He now alerts Alex before about 90% of her larger seizures. When he does, he follows his trained response: pressing a button, helping her onto her side, and cuddling close. That warning, and knowing Vader is there, has brought Alex and her family more peace of mind.

After a seizure, he stays beside Alex until she feels like herself again. She calls him “a true bundle of joy” who brings a smile to everyone’s face.

Vader has already flown with Alex to several states and Canada, and joined her at conferences with Ben’s support. 💛

Gracie has been waiting for more than eight months. She deserves a quiet place of her own and a person who will love her just as she is. Could you be the one she’s been waiting for? 💛

Gracie is a Collie and Lab mix who would thrive in a calm, adult home where someone is around most of the time. She needs to be the only pet, and a fenced yard would be a big plus because leash walks can be stressful for her.

What does Gracie bring to the arrangement? Sweet companionship, favorite toys to show you, affectionate leg rubs, and her world-class “woowoos.” She may even be persuaded to join you for a quiet hike!

Medical Mutts provides step-by-step guidance through live online classes, from foundation skills to customized task training. You’ll practice with your dog between sessions and, as part of the full program, complete a required four-day in-person workshop and final evaluation at our Indianapolis facility.
