Falcor was all smiles during his Dog Day Out! 🐾

This 7-year-old Great Dane/Pit Bull mix got to spend the day exploring White River State Park, enjoying a long walk, riding in the car, and (most importantly) getting pets from just about every human he passed. His Dog Day Out buddies said he was “truly amazing,” fantastic on the leash, and an absolute joy to spend the day with.

Being a Parent & Me volunteer looks a lot like this some days. 🥹

Snuggling up, slowing down, and spending a little one-on-one time with the animals who need some extra love like Cranberry. She isn’t quite available for adoption yet while our medical team works through some health issues, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve plenty of love and attention in the meantime.

Sometimes, keeping pets and people together looks different than we expect, and that can still be a victory. ❤️

The goal of our Pet Resource Center is to be there for pets and their people in whatever way we can, meeting families where they’re at.

About a year ago, we met Zeus and Lady, a father-daughter pair of Labradoodles, during a difficult matting emergency. We provided sedated grooming, giving them a fresh start and helping them return home to the family who loved them. Their mom was doing everything she could for her two human children and two fur babies, but a year later, financial strain became too much. With heavy hearts, she made the incredibly difficult decision to surrender Zeus and Lady.

And then came the happy ending: Zeus and Lady were adopted together! 🥹 When we shared the news with their past mom, she told us: "My literal faith has been restored to another degree. Thank you for going ABOVE AND BEYOND to support my family and help us get through this."

That’s the victory we’re celebrating. She gave them another year of love, fought for them as long as she could, and ultimately made sure they had a safe future. Sometimes rescue looks like asking for help, making a hard decision, and trusting that the right people will step in. Pets and their people deserve support at both ends of the leash, and we are committed to providing that support through our Pet Resource Center.

Senior dogs like Mimi are getting a second chance. ❤️🐾

We’re thrilled to announce that IndyHumane is a recipient of a Pathways Home Grant from Grey Muzzle, helping us provide essential care for senior dogs in our shelter, including things like medical and dental care and adoption-readiness support that can remove barriers to finding loving homes.

Mimi is one of the senior dogs who has benefited from this funding. During her time with us, we were able to diagnose and treat her for anemia, elevated liver values and abdominal distention, while also evaluating her for possible Cushing’s disease. She received follow-up care with her primary care veterinarian, support for being overweight, and a post-adoption dental.

Mimi found her people and was adopted into a family that loves her and gets to spend her golden years exactly where she belongs: in a loving home.

The Pathways Home Grant is part of Grey Muzzle’s national effort to identify effective ways to help senior dogs move from shelters into adoptive, foster or hospice homes. By participating, IndyHumane is helping identify solutions that can improve the lives of senior dogs here in Indianapolis and across the country.

A huge thank you to Grey Muzzle and their supporters for making this possible and for believing in a future where every senior dog has the chance to find safety, love and a soft landing.

This week our Medical Department celebrated an incredible milestone: our first in-house blood transfusion, helping save a dog’s life!

Milah came to IndyHumane through our Pet Resource Center for a wound evaluation and spay. Unfortunately, she became very sick the following day due to post-spay complications and needed emergency surgery. After surgery, Milah required a blood transfusion.

That’s where Squidward came in. 🐶❤️

Our medical team was able to collect blood from Squidward, a dog in our care, and perform the transfusion completely in-house. Milah responded incredibly well and improved dramatically.

And in the sweetest full-circle moment, Squidward was adopted immediately after donating blood and helping save another dog’s life. 🥹

This was a huge accomplishment for our Medical Department and an important new lifesaving capability for the animals in our care. A massive kudos to our Saturday team for their quick thinking, teamwork and dedication in making this happen!

Oso and Nova might just look like they're taking a break from their zoomies...but it's a lot more than that! 🐶 There’s actually some really important work happening with our Dogs Playing for Life program. We have dedicated staff members facilitating different playgroups to give dogs the opportunity to have extended breaks outside of their kennels, play with other dogs, and simply get to be dogs.

For a shelter dog, that enrichment can make a HUGE difference. Instead of just a quick potty-break walk, dogs get to tire themselves out, learn how to interact with other dogs safely and appropriately, and release all that pent-up energy. The result? Happier dogs who are often more comfortable in their kennels, more confident around other dogs, and better prepared for life in their future homes. ❤️

The next time you visit IndyHumane, take a minute to stop and watch the doggy playgroups happening in our front yard! You’ll see plenty of zoomies, happy tails and goofy dogs learning, playing and being themselves.
