Say hi to sweet Walnut. 🌰

Walnut is a shy, soft-hearted boy who is still learning that the world can be a kind place. Most days, he feels safest tucked away in a quiet hiding spot, watching life from a distance. But with patience and time, Walnut will lean into gentle pets. He also loves Churu cat treats, and he suddenly forgets how shy he is when they come out! 😂

He isn’t a cat who wants to be the center of attention. Walnut is calm, quiet, and independent, and he’s looking for a peaceful home where he can move at his own pace and feel safe being exactly who he is. A calm environment with another confident, friendly cat would help show Walnut that humans aren’t so scary after all!

Our system updates automatically, so the moment an animal is marked available, their adoption profile goes live on our website. That means if there’s a specific type of pet you’ve been hoping for, checking back often is key, you might catch them the second they’re ready!

We also always encourage you to visit the shelter in person. While not every animal you meet may be immediately available, there are times when we accept holds for when that animal does become available!

We always have the best time with our friends at Hensley Legal Group and IndyNow!

To mark our final IndyNow segment of the year, we knew we had to bring along someone extra special...sweet Wintergreen! And it turns out, everyone else thought she was just as adorable as we did. She found her forever family in less than an hour after we opened!

Huge thank you to Hensley Legal Group and IndyNow for always welcoming us, helping us share the important work we do, and giving our adoptable pets a chance to shine.
And not to brag…but we think we made their day 😉 Wintergreen spent her time making the rounds, saying hi to everyone, and soaking up all the love. What a perfect way to end the year!

Little Bratwurst is getting in the holiday spirit at IndyHumane!

Bratwurst is an 8-year-old, tiny short-coat Chihuahua weighing just 18 pounds who prefers a soft approach to life. He can be shy at first and may need multiple meet-and-greets and a little extra space when getting to know new people, but once he feels safe, he truly enjoys affection and quiet companionship.

Bratwurst would do best as the only pet in the home. He has not enjoyed living with other pups in the past, so a calm, dog-free environment will allow him to feel secure and relaxed. He’s housetrained, easy to steer on walks, and at his happiest when things are peaceful and predictable. Because he can be unsure around strangers, a home without small children is recommended.

He does have a gland disorder that has caused some hair loss, as well as mild ear tip necrosis. Neither currently impacts his quality of life, and any future care can be discussed with your veterinarian. What matters most is that Bratwurst feels safe, loved, and comfortable!

How Sosa is hoping to be on your couch this holiday season. 😴

This cutie is around 2 years old and a Husky mix. He's a little skinny right now, so an adopter who can help him gain some weight in a healthy way is essential! Plus, he wouldn't be mad if he was slipped a few extra treats here and there. 😆

We have a hard update about our girl, Aphrodite.

Aphrodite was originally adopted from IndyHumane years ago, and when she found her way back to us, one of our own staff members actually discovered her wandering along a busy street. She had rough skin, hair loss, and a large, fluid-filled mass on her neck. At first, we hoped it was something treatable, like an inflamed salivary gland.

After surgical removal and testing, we received the news no one ever wants to hear: the mass was cancerous. Aphrodite has late-stage cancer, and her time with us is heartbreakingly limited.

What makes this even harder is that Aphrodite doesn’t act sick. If you met her today, you might never guess what she’s facing. She is bubbly, affectionate, and endlessly loving. She just wants to be close, soaking up every bit of attention she can get. Everyone who meets her falls in love instantly. While we know her condition may change as the disease progresses, we are cherishing every good day she has right now.

Because of her medical condition, we are seeking a Fospice (foster hospice) home for Aphrodite. You do not need to be an existing IndyHumane foster in this specific situation. What we need is someone who can provide love, comfort, honest updates, and the willingness to have difficult conversations with our team when the time comes. It isn’t easy, but Aphrodite deserves to spend her remaining days surrounded by warmth, peace, and love.

Aphrodite would thrive in a home where she can receive all the affection she deserves. She would do best in a home without other dogs, or with a calm dog who will respect her space. Huge thank you to our amazing friends at Eli Lilly! Their team spent a few hours with us helping prepare for our upcoming Paw-Jama Party, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Volunteer groups like this mean so much to us. Taking time out of busy workdays to come to the shelter and jump in wherever help is needed truly makes a difference.

This incredible crew put together goodie bags for our Paw-Jama Party fosters, packed with treats, toys, food, and everything a foster family will need when welcoming a dog or cat into their home over the holidays. Because of them, our fosters and our animals will be extra set up for success!

🐾 There’s still time to sign up to participate in a Paw-Jama Party, and you don’t need to be an existing IndyHumane foster to join! We provide everything you need, all you have to do is open your home and heart to an IndyHumane pet for a few days over the holidays.

This program gives pets a much-needed break from the shelter to decompress in a home, and it helps lighten the load for our hardworking staff who care for animals 365 days a year.

Juniper is ready to get outta here!

Her journey started on the streets. She and another dog were found roaming, clearly hungry and malnourished. A kind passerby stepped in to help, and we soon discovered neither pup had a microchip. Thankfully, Juniper is now safe and ready for a brand-new beginning!

Juniper absolutely loves people and attention. When hanging out with other dogs in our playgroups, she can be shy and a bit nervous. After she warmed up to the other pups a bit, we got to see some of the cutest little play bows from her! Juniper can be shy and a little nervous, greeting with a tucked tail and gentle curiosity. She’s done well with big and medium dogs and continues to build confidence every day.

At 9 months old, she currently only weighs 25 pounds. She definitely needs to gain some weight and continue growing! If you’re looking for a sweet, affectionate pup to grow alongside, Juniper would love to meet you. Learn more about her at indyhumane.org ❤️
