Thanks to everyone who came out for Putt from the Ruff this weekend! We had a great time getting to know you and introducing our adoptable pets to your teams.

We hope to see you again next year!

Recently, an adopter arrived at their pickup appointment by Lyft. We’ve had people fly in. We’ve seen people walk to us. This weekend, an adopter is planning to take the bus, and it’s not the first time.

We love seeing the lengths people will go to for their new pets. It bodes well for how hard they will work to provide the best care for our rescues. All we ever want to know is that our animals will be loved and cherished long after they leave us.

Allow us to introduce Harlequin. She is a 6 month old female Syrian hamster who is truly beautiful in person and an absolute gremlin in every photo. I’d love to tell you she’s really very sweet, but that would also not be a realistic portrait.

She is feisty but not nippy. She’s hilarious but not cuddly. And she really is gorgeous in person. Sorry we’re unable to showcase it for you.

She’ll be adoptable as soon as her intake hold is up later this month, and in the meantime, we’ll keep taking pics and hope something finally captures her.

Each month, we choose a new name theme for all of the intakes we receive. It helps us keep track of when animals came into rescue even without looking it up and makes it super easy to create a list of names to use when large groups arrive at once.

It’s also a whole lot of fun! Animal rescue can be difficult and heartbreaking and physically demanding. It’s nice to have a few moments to get silly with.

Imp, new bearded dragon intake
Vermont Sharp Cheddar, adoptable dwarf hamster
Pratfall, adoptable corn snake
Aft, adoptable rat

Can you guess their themes?

Did you know most of our animals cost us MORE than we will take in adoption fees?

We have to strike a careful balance between a reasonable fee to help offset costs and remaining comparable to pet stores. Otherwise, many people will just go buy animals who are not vetted, may be pregnant, and are often surrendered shortly after purchase, perpetuating the problem.

Our animals are vetted, treated for parasites, and may be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. This all costs money above and beyond the adoption fees we will receive. Some animals also stay with us for months on end as they wait for a forever home, racking up high bills for food, litter, and lighting as needed.

With no additional funding from the state or grants, we rely on our generous supporters to help offset our expensive and provide the care each animal needs. If you’d like to help, you can contribute below or through PayPal, CashApp, and Venmo.

You may have heard about the recent rat hoarding case facilitated by our friends at The Pipsqueakery. We have several of them in rescue already with more arriving today.

We would love to move them into foster homes for more one-on-one attention and socialization. When you foster for us, we procide a cage, supplies, and starter food & litter. We handle any vetting and adoption screening while you care for animals in your home until their adoption.

If you’re interested in fostering rats – or any other species! – you can apply online.

Happy World Hamster Day!

You may recognize some of these sweethearts from the hamster hoarding case in February handled by our friends at The Pipsqueakery🦫🤎 Right now we are looking for fur-ever homes for 20 hamsters, and counting! Most are solitary animals that need their own space, but if you are looking for the perfect pair ask us about our dwarf hamsters🐹

After Capy’s road trip home, it’s time to update our Out of State Adoption map! Adopters travel from all across the country to find unique species not available in their states, special breeds rarely found in rescue, and because they fell in love with one of our rescues from afar.

They have picked up pets while already in the area, stopped by as they were passing through, or made special road trips to meet their new family members.

While we do try to be as flexible as possible for adopters with long journeys, we do not offer transportation. Adopters are responsible for researching their own state’s laws on exotic pet ownership and interstate transfer.

If you’re interested in coloring in one of our white spaces, you can apply online!

Capybara has been with us since 2023. We did not list him for adoption until he has successfully made it through one winter indoors. And once we started accepting applications, it was a very long process of thorough vetting before we found the right fit.

He is now home, 10 hours away, where he will be cherished by his family and community. It’s tough to find the right home for an animal who will likely outlive all of us, but we are confident his new family has a strong support system to get him through future transitions.

It was the right call for Capy, but we will miss him a lot! Some goodbyes are just a little harder than others.
