A Tribute to Samson
Samson was one of the four souls we pulled from a retired breeder, a long, proud lineage behind him, but a fuller life ahead of him. Born in 2013, he carried that unmistakable smile that made people soften the moment they saw him. He loved the water, loved tennis balls, loved fetch, and loved people with the kind of wholehearted joy only a Labrador can give.

He and his sister were once destined for a very influential home in Alabama, but life had other plans. Their health shifted the path, and instead they found something far better, a family who had already proven their loyalty, compassion, and devotion through years of support. A family who didn’t just adopt dogs; they welcomed them as kin.

This couple had weathered their own health challenges, and in a home without children, their dogs are their children. Samson’s love lifted their spirits in ways only a dog can, quietly, consistently, without asking for anything except to be near them. He and his sister brought laughter back into rooms that had been too quiet, and comfort into days that had been too heavy.

When Samson and his sister arrived, there was a moment of hesitation; “Are we too old for this? Can we handle two?” But love has a way of answering questions before we even ask them. With time, patience, and the gentle reassurance that bonded pairs choose their people as much as we choose them, it became clear that this match was meant to be.

And in the end, everyone understood the truth: Samson didn’t just get rescued. He rescued right back.

His final night was spent surrounded by love, and his final chapter was written in a home that cherished him deeply. We know how profoundly his parents loved him, and how painful this loss is. His sister is mourning, too, searching for him, feeling the absence only she can feel.

We ask for prayers for her healing, and for the hearts of the family who gave Samson the life he deserved. Thank you Samson for visiting me in spirit, rest in peace sweet boy you've done your job well here on earth. Southern Skies Labrador Rescue & Adoption, Inc.

A Family Saved — A Mother’s Devotion in the Woods
Yesterday, a post appeared on our local community page about a mama dog and her babies living deep in the woods. For at least a month, this little family had been trying to survive; emaciated, covered in fleas and ticks, and relying on the kindness of neighbors who were doing everything they could to help them.

We searched yesterday but couldn’t find them.
This morning, the woman who had been feeding them called again. A kind man in the area had managed to coax the dogs closer to his home, keeping them safe long enough for us to get there.

We were able to secure two of the dogs immediately, but the third had wandered off. We alerted the woman who had been feeding them, and she headed straight to the area. Thanks to her persistence, she was able to safely catch the last pup.

All three, the mother and her two surviving babies, are severely emaciated, nothing but skin over bone. They were covered in fleas, ticks, and di*********es, exhausted from surviving in the woods for so long.

And yet… this mama never stopped caring for her babies.
Neighbors told us she often let her puppies eat first, even when she was starving. She protected them the best she could with the little strength she had left.

We also learned she had more puppies, but tragically, they did not survive. This sweet mama has carried that grief alone in the woods for weeks.

Tonight, she is finally relieved. She is safe. Her surviving babies are safe. And she no longer has to fight for their lives on her own.

We are deeply grateful to the people who refused to look away; the neighbors who fed them, the man who kept them close, and the woman who helped secure the last pup. It truly took a community to save this family. They still have a ways to go to recover.

They will now begin their healing journey with Southern Skies.
We will slowly get them healthy, nourished, and medically vetted.
For the first time in a long time, they can rest.

Southern Skies Campaign: Advocate for Alabama’s Animals
Across Alabama, dogs and cats are being abandoned every day; left to fend for themselves on roadsides, in fields, and behind dumpsters. It’s not just heartbreaking; it’s illegal.
Southern Skies Labrador Rescue & Adoption, Inc. is launching the D.R.H.S. Campaign: "Document. Report. Help. Speak" to raise awareness and empower communities to help enforce the laws already on the books.

Our goal is simple:
To make sure every citizen knows that dumping animals is a crime, and that you have the power to stop it.
By documenting what you see, reporting it, helping safely when possible, and speaking out, you become part of a movement that protects Alabama’s companion animals and demands accountability.

Together, we can turn compassion into action and make Alabama a state where cruelty is met with justice, and every dog and cat is treated with dignity. Please share if you live in Alabama.
