Some scorpions look like animals. Scorpiops cf. kautii – Thai Flat Rock Scorpion looks like someone opened a 3D modeling program and hit print.

Everything about these guys has such a cool, almost manufactured appearance. Their flattened bodies, hard angular features, oversized claws, and sleek dark coloration make them look more like a tiny piece of armored machinery than something wandering around in nature.

They’re also a rare species in the hobby, so they’re not something you come across every day. We were fortunate enough to get a small group, but we’re now down to a very limited number.

If you’re someone who appreciates the slightly stranger side of scorpions, this is definitely one worth checking out.

Ty Dye Exotics is heading to Reptilian Nation Expo San Antonio August 29–30, and we’re bringing a LOT with us.

If you’ve been to our booth before, you know we don’t exactly believe in traveling light. We’ll have a huge selection of tarantulas, scorpions, centipedes, true spiders, millipedes, isopods, feeders and more, ranging from hobby staples to some seriously uncommon species.

And we’re not stopping at the animals. We’ll also have supplies, enclosures, feeders and everything you need to get your new setup started, making our booth a pretty solid one-stop shop for invert keepers.

One of our favorite parts of expos, though, is getting to actually talk with everyone. We have years of hands-on experience working with invertebrates, so come ask questions, talk husbandry, get help choosing a species, or just nerd out about bugs with us. We genuinely love this stuff and are always happy to share what we’ve learned.

Whoever decided to call this one the Lava Spider absolutely understood the assignment.

Davus sp. Panama – Lava Spider Tarantula has this incredible fiery orange coloration contrasted against deep black that really does make it look like someone pulled a tiny tarantula straight out of a volcano. And as you can see from this little beauty, those colors certainly know how to show off.

They’re a smaller terrestrial species from Panama, but they pack a surprising amount of personality into that little body. They can be quick when they want to be, have a healthy appetite, and are usually pretty enthusiastic about adding their own webbing and renovations to their setup.

They’re also one of those tarantulas that just seems to get better looking as it grows. Each molt brings a little more size and a whole lot more appreciation for that gorgeous orange-and-black contrast.

Small spider, unnecessarily dramatic paint job, and absolutely no complaints from me.

If you’ve always thought scorpions looked a little too intimidating to keep, Pandinus imperator – Emperor Scorpion might change your mind.

These big glossy beauties are one of the most iconic scorpions in the hobby, but their appearance is considerably more dramatic than their typical personality. Emperor Scorpions are generally pretty docile, hardy, and straightforward to care for, which makes them a great species for newer keepers while still being impressive enough for longtime scorpion enthusiasts.

They can reach an impressive size, have those massive claws, and basically look like they should be guarding the entrance to an ancient tomb. Meanwhile, most are perfectly content just doing scorpion things and minding their own business.

Of course, they’re still scorpions and should always be treated with respect, but as far as approachable species go, Emperors have earned their reputation as a hobby classic.

If camouflage had a fashion department, Pseudocreobotra wahlbergii – Spiny Flower Mantis would definitely be working there.

These little mantises are ridiculously beautiful, with their mix of white, green, pink, and cream coloring that helps them blend right into flowers and vegetation. Adults also develop those incredible spiral-like eyespots on their wings that look almost too perfectly designed to be real.

But underneath all that pretty packaging is still a tiny predator.
Spiny Flower Mantises are ambush hunters, using their camouflage to sit patiently and wait for an unsuspecting meal to wander a little too close. Then those raptorial front legs do exactly what mantis legs were designed to do—grab first and ask questions never.

They stay relatively small compared to some of the giant mantis species, but they definitely don’t need size to make an impression.

Basically, they look like a delicate little flower right up until you’re a fly. Then the whole experience changes pretty quickly.

Aphonopelma gabeli goes by several common names, including Carlsbad Green, Chiricahuan Gray, and Chihuahuan Grey Tarantula. Depending on the lighting, their otherwise earthy coloration can take on these beautiful subtle greenish-gray tones that are hard to fully appreciate until you see one in person.

They’re a native North American species found throughout parts of the Southwest, and they come with many of the qualities people love about Aphonopelma. They’re hardy, generally laid-back, relatively straightforward to care for, and females can potentially be with you for decades.

That combination also makes them a great species for newer keepers while still being interesting enough that longtime hobbyists can appreciate them.

Basically, A. gabeli is the tarantula equivalent of earth tones nothing obnoxiously flashy, just naturally good-looking and somehow even better when the lighting hits just right.

You have to appreciate a tarantula that looks like it dressed specifically for spooky season.

Hapalopus guerreroi – Speckle Patch Guerilla has this gorgeous combination of deep blacks, warm rusty-orange tones, and that little golden patch on the abdomen that really stands out once they start putting on some size. They’re closely related to the better-known Pumpkin Patch tarantulas, and you can definitely see the family resemblance.

These are a smaller species, but what they lack in size they make up for in personality. They’re quick, active little spiders that love to dig, rearrange their surroundings, and add plenty of webbing around their enclosure.

Basically, give them some substrate and they’ll handle the interior decorating themselves.
They’re also fairly straightforward to care for, making them a fun option for keepers who want something a little different without needing space for a giant setup.

Honestly, with colors like these, I think the Speckle Patch deserves a little more attention in the hobby. The tiny golden b***y patch alone is doing some serious work.

If there were such a thing as a “friendly” tarantula, Grammostola pulchripes – Chaco Golden Knee would probably be in the running for the title.

Obviously, tarantulas aren’t sitting around hoping to become your new best friend, but Chaco Golden Knees are well known in the hobby for their incredibly laid-back personalities. They tend to take life at their own pace and are generally much more interested in minding their own business than choosing violence.

Add in their hardy nature, straightforward care, impressive adult size, and those beautiful golden bands across their legs, and it’s pretty easy to understand why they’ve become such a hobby favorite.

They’re an excellent choice for someone getting their first tarantula, but they’re certainly not just a “beginner spider.” Even experienced keepers continue to appreciate them—and plenty of us never stop keeping them.

Sometimes the most exciting spiders arrive looking like tiny brown specks with a very big secret.

These little slings are Ischnocolus jickelii ‘Blue’ – Dhofar Blue Dwarf Tarantulas, an extremely rare species originating from the Dhofar region of Oman. Right now they’re still tiny, but if you look closely, some are already starting to show the faintest hints of that beautiful coloration to come.

What makes these especially exciting for us is that Ty Dye Exotics was the first to bring this species into the United States. They’re not established in the U.S. hobby yet, so having the opportunity to work with them is pretty darn cool.

And we recently dramatically slashed the price on these slings, making this unusual species much more accessible than when they first arrived.

For now, the fun is watching them grow molt by molt as more of that gorgeous metallic blue slowly starts making an appearance.

Sometimes you just have to trust the process—and these little guys have one heck of a glow-up ahead of them.
