Well, we certainly weren't expecting our letter to the little bunny at Hermann Park to reach so many people. ❤️

We've spent the last few days reading through your comments, and while there have been a lot of different reactions, one thing is clear: a whole lot of people care about these lil buns.

And we're really glad this story is being shared.

Not because it's a happy one, but because it's an important one.

We talk a lot about the dangers of dumping domestic rabbits, and unfortunately, what happened at Hermann Park is one of the realities of rescue. It's heartbreaking, it's frustrating, and it's something we wish we never had to experience.

But since so many of you are here, we thought we'd share a few other stories with you, too.

There's Apples, who was rescued after living outside a motel for a week and has since found her forever home!

Then there's Bilbo, who was found outdoors after his companion was killed by a dog. He came to us severely underweight and in rough shape, but he's doing so much better now and is looking for a family to call his own.

There's little Fievel, who lost his sibling after an encounter with a cat. Thankfully, Fievel was brought to safety and now has the opportunity to grow up knowing love and care.

And there's Samwise, who came to us suffering from a terrible case of flystrike. He needed extensive medical care and surgery, but this little guy has been fighting his way through recovery, and we're so proud of how far he's come.

These are just four of the many bunnies whose stories we're lucky enough to be a part of.

We couldn't save the bunny at Hermann Park, and we'll always wish that story had ended differently. But we also know that there are so many more bunnies who need us, and so many lives we still have the opportunity to change.

That's rescue. Sometimes it's heartbreaking. Sometimes it's exhausting. And sometimes you get to watch a bunny who was once fighting for their life do their very first binky in a safe, loving home.

We want to thank everyone who has shared our post, offered kind words, or taken the time to learn a little more about domestic rabbits. We know that story was difficult to read, and we're grateful that so many of you cared about a bunny you never got to meet.

And if you're new here, welcome! We'd love for you to get to know us and the bunnies we care for.

Our Center is open to the public on weekends from 11 AM to 4 PM. You're always welcome to stop by, ask questions about rabbit care, learn about fostering or adoption, or just get to know some of the little personalities behind the stories we share.

To the little bunny at Hermann Park,

We're sorry we couldn't get to you in time.

On Sunday, we learned that you were out there, wandering around a park where you never should have had to fend for yourself.

You probably didn't understand why you were there or why the world around you was so unfamiliar. You were just a little bunny trying to survive.

But we want you to know that there were people looking for you.

For three days, our volunteers tried to catch you. They gave their time, their energy, and their patience because they wanted to bring you somewhere safe. Somewhere you could have fresh hay, a warm place to sleep, and people who would care for you.

They had plans for you, even if you didn't know it yet.

And on Wednesday, when they went back to try again, they found what was left of you.

We're so sorry.

We wish your story had ended differently. We wish we'd gotten the chance to know your personality, learn what treats you liked, and eventually watch you find a family who would love you.

Instead, we're left wondering who you were before you ended up out there.

And that's something we wish more people understood.

When we tell people not to dump domestic rabbits outside, it's because of stories like yours.

Domestic rabbits aren't wild animals. They aren't equipped to survive on their own, even in a park full of grass and trees. They're vulnerable to predators, disease, parasites, and so many dangers they were never meant to face alone.

You deserved better than that.

And we want you to know something else.

The people who tried to save you are hurting, too.

They spent three days hoping they'd be able to bring you home. Instead, they were left with something heartbreaking that no volunteer should have to experience.

We wish we could protect them from that part of rescue.

But we also know that the reason they went looking for you in the first place is because they care so deeply. And we never want them to lose that part of themselves.

Sometimes in rescue, we remind each other that there will always be another bunny tomorrow.

But we don't say that because you didn't matter.

We don't say it because you can be replaced, or because your story is something we should simply move on from.

We say it because we have to find a way to keep going without letting the heartbreak take away the love that brought us here.

We have to let ourselves grieve, be angry, and feel frustrated. We have to learn from the things we couldn't change and give ourselves permission to rest when it all becomes too much.

Because somewhere out there, another little bunny is waiting for someone to show up.

And when that day comes, we want our volunteers to still have the hope, patience, and compassion they had when they went looking for you.

Not because we've forgotten you.

But because you mattered.

To our volunteers, thank you for trying. We know those three days meant something, and we're so sorry for what you had to find. Please know that even when we can't save them, the effort and love you put into trying is never meaningless.

And to you, little bunny, we're sorry the world wasn't kinder.

We're sorry that someone left you somewhere you didn't belong.

We're sorry we never got to give you the life you deserved.

We hope that by sharing your story, someone will think twice before abandoning their rabbit. That someone will choose to ask for help instead of leaving their bunny outside. That maybe, because of you, another bunny won't have to experience what you did.

We couldn't save you.

But we can keep trying to make sure fewer bunnies end up like you.

You mattered, little one.

And you always will. 💔

🎃 Hello. It's me, Oberon.

I've only been here a little while, but I'm learning a lot about humans.

For example, they have this thing called Halloween.

Apparently, they decorate everything with pumpkins, dress up in funny outfits, and give each other treats.

I don't really understand the outfits, but I am VERY interested in the treats.

And guess what? My foster mom said we're doing a little Halloween thing at the Center this Saturday!

They're putting together little trick-or-treat goodies for bunnies who come visit. There's going to be a cute place to take Halloween pictures, and I heard a rumor that the humans might get candy, too.

They've also been putting lots of new things on the shelves in our Bunny Boutique. Oxbow, Science Selective Loops, No Furry Delights, toys, treats, and all kinds of things I would personally like to investigate.

They told me that when people shop here, it helps take care of me and all my bunny friends.

Which is pretty neat, because I like being taken care of. 🥹

My humans say we're keeping Halloween small this year because we're still getting settled into our new Center. But they're planning lots of fun things for the future!

So if you have a bunny, bring them by this Saturday!

His name is Fivel. He's tiny, he's adorable, and we'd like to formally request that he never go on another adventure again.

Seriously, little dude. You've done enough.

Our newest intake was found wandering the streets with his sibling, and unfortunately, their adventure didn't have the happy ending we hoped for. Fivel's sibling was caught by a cat and didn't survive.

It's a heartbreaking reminder that the world outside is a dangerous place for domestic rabbits, especially ones this small.

And here's something important that not everyone knows: a cat doesn't have to seriously injure a rabbit for the encounter to become life-threatening.

Even a tiny bite can introduce bacteria that cause dangerous infections. Sometimes you can't even see the puncture wound. That's why any suspected cat bite should be treated as an emergency and checked by a veterinarian right away.

We wish we could have brought both bunnies to safety.

But Fivel is here now, and we're hoping the rest of his story involves significantly fewer adventures and significantly more snacks.

Preferably the kind of adventures where he discovers a new cardboard box or learns how to demand treats from his future family.

Welcome to the good life, Fivel. You've earned it. ❤️

If we could have just one more day with them, we know exactly how we'd spend it.

One more forehead kiss. One more handful of their favorite greens. One more chance to tell them how much we love them.

We know so many of you understand that feeling.

This year, in honor of Día de Mu***os, we've created an ofrenda at the HRR Center for the bunnies we've loved and lost.

Día de Mu***os is a Mexican tradition centered on remembering and celebrating those who have passed. October 27 has also become a day to remember our beloved animals and welcome their spirits home.

This tradition holds a special place in our Executive Director's heart, and she wanted to share a little piece of her Mexican heritage with the community that has become such a big part of hers.

And we couldn't think of a more meaningful way to do that than by creating a space for the little souls who have left such big impressions on our lives.

And we'd love for your bunnies to be here, too.

Bring a photo of a bunny you've lost and add it to our ofrenda. Leave their name, write them a note, tell us something silly they used to do, or simply let their photo sit among so many others who were loved just as much.

If you can't visit, comment their photo below or email it to us. We'll make sure they're included.

On October 27, we'll be spending a quiet evening at the Center remembering them together, and you're welcome to join us.

We can't give them one more day, but we can give them a place to be remembered.

And maybe that's a little bit of how we keep them with us. 🧡

We thought we'd have more time with French Fry.

Last Sunday, a wonderful family found a tiny bunny in a park. They picked him up, named him French Fry, and brought him to us, hoping we could give him a chance at a better life.

He was very young and his little body had already been through so much.

He was painfully thin, dehydrated, exhausted, and his bottom was covered in urine. We don't know how long he'd been out there or what his life had been like before he was found, but we knew we wanted to give him a chance.

And for a little while, we really thought we could.

We got him settled, gave him fluids, monitored his temperature, and checked on him closely every day. He was eating his hay, drinking water, and showing us little signs that gave us hope.

Every day, we found ourselves getting a little more excited about his future.

We were already imagining the day we'd get to introduce him as a healthy, happy bunny looking for his forever home. We wondered what he'd look like once he was healthy, what his personality would be like once he felt better, and who the lucky person would be who got to love him for the rest of his life.

Sadly, this morning, our sweet French Fry passed away.

We don't know exactly what happened. There may have been something going on inside his little body that we couldn't see. Sometimes, even when things seem to be improving, there is more happening than we realize.

Since opening our Center, we've welcomed more rabbits with serious medical needs than ever before. Some have incredible recoveries, like Oberon and Nigel, whose story we'll be sharing soon. Others, like French Fry, don't get the ending we had hoped for.

But we think their stories deserve to be told, too.

French Fry was only with us for four days, but he mattered. He had people checking on him, celebrating every little improvement, and hoping for his future. He wasn't just another intake. He was a little bunny who deserved to grow up, get healthy, and find someone who would spoil him for years to come.

And it hurts knowing we won't get to see any of that.

To the family who found him last Sunday, we want you to know how grateful we are that you stopped for him.

You probably didn't know what would happen when you picked him up. You just saw a little bunny who needed help, and you decided that his life was worth stopping for.

You gave him a name. You gave him a chance. And because of you, he didn't have to spend his final days alone in a park.

We know this isn't the ending you were hoping for. It isn't the one we were hoping for either. But we hope there's some comfort in knowing that for those last few days, he had a warm place to sleep, fresh hay and food, and people who genuinely cared about him.

We don't know what French Fry's life was like before you found him, but we do know that in his final days, he was someone's reason to stop, someone's reason to hope, and someone's reason to cry today.

Thank you for giving him the name French Fry, for bringing him to us, and for allowing us to love him, even if it was only for a little while.

Rest easy, little French Fry. We really thought we'd have more time. ❤️

Following his recent neuter, Pluto would like to formally apologize for his past behavior.

He's had some time to think about his actions and now understands that leaving little poops all over the place creates unnecessary work for the humans.

As part of his commitment to personal growth, he's taken it upon himself to supervise the cleaning crew and familiarize himself with the vacuum.

Has he actually cleaned anything? No.

Has he stopped leaving poops everywhere? Also no.

But personal growth takes time, and we'd appreciate everyone respecting his journey.

Our first ever Bunnies & Bams is officially in the books! 🀄🐰

This past Friday we hosted our very first Mahjong night at the HRR Center, and we had SUCH a good time! It was so fun seeing everyone come together, whether they were learning Mahjong for the first time or already knew their way around the tiles.

And thanks to everyone who joined us, we raised over $1,300 for the bunnies! 💙

We really love getting to use our Center for things like this. Bringing people together, making new friends, trying something new and getting to support the bunnies while we're at it. We are so grateful to everyone who came out and made our first Mahjong night such a fun evening!

We also want to give a huge thank you to the wonderful businesses who helped make this happen!

It's tough being a bunny 😞 🤣 Rupert is now recovering from his neuter but he has not recovered from being told no about second breakfast.

He will be on our adoptable page soon once he is completely recovered.

The babies are getting bigger. 🥹

It feels like five minutes ago they were tiny little potatoes we were checking on constantly, and now they are growing into actual little rabbits with opinions, personalities, favorite snacks and a whole lot of energy.

And while you all get to watch them grow up, behind the scenes there is a lot that goes into getting them to this point. Food. Hay. Litter. Veterinary care. Supplies. A safe place to grow. And people showing up every single day to make sure they have what they need.

Then there are bunnies like Oberon, who came through our doors just last Friday needing hours of grooming, treatment, comfort and someone willing to stay with him until 2 in the morning while he finally started to feel a little better.

That is what events like Bunnies & Bams help support.

And somehow, we are down to ONE LAST TICKET for this Friday. 😭

Bunnies & Bams is happening Friday from 6–8:30 PM at the HRR Center, and we are incredibly grateful to the businesses who helped make this night possible.
