Brown County Humane Society, Kansas Our Mission Statement: the purpose of this society is the prevention of cruelty to animals. All members and the public are encouraged to attend.

BCHS meetings are held at 6:00pm the 3rd Monday of each month at the shelter, 2393 Mallard Rd., Hiawatha, KS . Come and find out our current activites and share your ideas with us. Spay & Neuter Program:
Early in 2010 BCHS members decided to seek funding for a spay/neuter program for overpopulation in Brown County. Our members visited with the community leaders in every town in Br.Co and also Tri

bal authorities, We heard the same thing from everyone "Pet overpopulation is a big problem in our community." The spay/neuter program became a reality when we received a donation from the Sac & Fox Tribe specifically for spaying and neutering pets. Then in July of 2010 BCHS was notified that our spay/neuter grant application to a private foundation had been approved and we were awarded a grant for the sterilization of dogs. The funds from both Sac&Fox and the grant were used to offer reduced cost sterilization of pets owned by families that can not afford the full cost. We believe the Spay/Neuter programs were a huge success and we plan to apply for addidtional grants to allow us to continue to offer assistance. Policy on Animals:
We currently accept stray animals brought in by animal control or police authorities from Hiawatha and surrounding communities. The shelter does not accept owner-surrender cats. This means an animal someone owns and they are choosing to get rid of them. However, there are instances when a family simply cannot keep their pet. Humanes society members try to locate homes and work with applicable rescue organizations that might accept them. The rescue groups that BCHS works with are great organizations that do their very best to ensure these animals go only to responsible new owners that will give the pet loving homes. Wish list:

Trash bags, kitchen or larger
Stamps
Collars (all sizes)
Toys- espescially for puppies and kittens
Flea & Tick treatment- for dogs and cats (all sizes) Donations are limited to Frontline or Advantix brand only. Dog food, dry & canned (Pedigree preferred)

Double Trouble is what these two are!!! 🤩😉
This adoption update today made me tear up when I received it.. 🥹 “Apollo” was a super special dog to me! He was a LOT and I am drawn instantly to intense, high strung dogs. Last year we took him in from a lil rural shelter a few hours away where he lived for 8 months.. He had started to decline mentally and was losing weight from being so stressed out.. 💔 I was tagged in numerous posts asking if BCHS would take him so I eventually said yes but with no expectations of anything but just what if maybe by some miracle we might just be a step away from his forever home! I’m delighted to say that’s exactly what BCHS was - a temporary home until he found his family! ❤️ A kind lady offered to foster him and well her adorable lil toddler and Apollo became best friends! The adoption was finalized and the rest is history!!! 🥰 We love you Apollo!

This is not the post I wanted to type out but it comes with the territory.. I (along with our veterinarian) made the decision to let Baron go peacefully today.. 💔 I was with him and told him how much we loved him and what a good boy he was.. ♥️ He has been on medication but has been having some breakthrough seizures still and today he had at least 3 back to back in less than 30 min. 😭 It’s not fair to make him continue to live a life like that. I made peace with the decision knowing he was so loved the last week and got to snuggle in bed at night with Ava, one of his favorite humans! 🥹 We loved you so much sweet boy and will never forget you! 🤍
Thank you to everyone who donated towards his care - we are pretty close to having enough to cover his two vet bills!
Give your pups an extra tight hug tonight! 🤗🐶
