Blue Ridge Humane Society

Blue Ridge Humane Society We envision a community that embraces compassionate care for pets and their people! In addition, each pet goes home with a 30 day free health insurance plan.

We are dedicated to ensuring a safe environment for homeless, injured, and abused domestic animals awaiting adoption. BRHS assesses behavior, bathes, grooms, and treats conditions as necessary with all animals under our care. Prior to adoption, each animal is provided with all the appropriate vaccinations, a microchip, dewormed and they are spayed or neutered. We are committed to finding lifelong

homes for every pet. Screening and counseling of potential families contributes to our successful adoptions.

It’s hard to believe a year has passed since Hurricane Helene struck our community.

Like many of you, we’ll never forget the devastation of those first days. But we’ll also never forget what followed—neighbors helping neighbors, fosters stepping up, volunteers loading cars with supplies, and people driving across the country to donate food for pets in need.

Because of your generosity, pets and people were kept safe. Hundreds of animals received food, litter, and emergency aid, while families found comfort and reassurance knowing their beloved companions would not be left behind.

The storm left its mark, but it also revealed the incredible resilience of our community. Today, as we remember those difficult days, we also renew a shared commitment: no matter what challenges may come, animals and the people who love them will not face them alone.

That is a promise we can uphold—together, every day.

This week we were thrilled to welcome the Brevard College Women’s Lacrosse team to BRHS! 🥍🐾
This amazing group of student-athletes brought 58 handmade tug ropes created from old T-shirts—proof that a little creativity can go a long way in bringing joy to shelter pets. The team spent the afternoon meeting many of our pups and cats, spreading smiles, wags, and purrs throughout the Adoption Center.

We are so grateful for their generosity and for choosing to spend their time making a difference for animals in our community. Thank you, Brevard College Women’s Lacrosse! 💙

We are so lucky to have amazing volunteers like Fran! 💙

Fran has been volunteering with BRHS for over ten years, and her dedication is unmatched. The first photo shows her on September 26, 2024, visiting our Adoption Center to walk dogs in the middle of a pouring rainstorm and flooding. The second photo? Taken September 25, 2025—one year later—doing the exact same thing!

Come rain, wind, or sleet, our volunteers show up for the animals no matter what. We are endlessly grateful for Fran and all of the incredible volunteers who make our mission possible every single day. 🐾

We recently received this heartfelt note from a community member, and it truly captures the impact of our Veterinary Assistance Program:

“Dear Blue Ridge Humane Society, I want to say a big Thank You for the voucher you gave to us to pay the vet to see our kitten Mimi. Without your help so many pets would die and never enjoy their life that is so precious… Mimi is a very healthy, very happy & much loved little kitten. Again, we thank you so much.”

Each year, hundreds of families received assistance through our Veterinary Assistance Program, which provides financial support to pet owners facing unexpected medical expenses.

Because of this program, Mimi’s family was able to get her the care she needed—and today, she is thriving. Stories like this remind us that even small acts of help can make a life-changing difference.💙

We are thrilled last week to receive a check for $1,000 plus a wheelbarrow full of supplies in honor of 'Pay It Forward for Lindsay Week'.

This initiative was created by family and friends after Lindsay Michelle Van Zant, daughter of Lynyrd Skynyrd band member Johnny Van Zant, lost her battle with a rare form of cancer in 2018. Lindsay worked as a vet tech and had a deep love for animals.

The Homegrown Kindness Project celebrates Lindsay all year long with Random Acts of Kindness, but each year during the week of her birthday (Sept. 12) they honor Lindsay with 'Pay it Forward for Lindsay Week'.

Two close friends of Lindsay, who moved to Hendersonville from Jacksonville Florida last year, wanted to honor Lindsay's love for animals by supporting a local animal welfare organization. We were so very honored to be chosen as a local honoree for this beautiful campaign!

Working in animal welfare always isn’t easy. The days are long, the work is physical, and we pour our whole selves into caring for each animal and supporting every person who comes through our doors. At times it can be exhausting—but then there are the moments that make it all worth it. Moments like sunshine-filled snuggles with Bella while sporting a rainbow unicorn horn. Moments where love and gratitude shine through and remind us why we do what we do.

🐾 Elliot Update! 🍼

When little Elliot first came to us, he was so tiny and weak that he had to be tube fed around the clock by his amazing foster, Jenni. Thanks to her dedication, he’s made incredible progress—Elliot has now graduated from tube feeding to bottle feeding!

Each small milestone means the world, and Elliot’s journey is a reminder of the behind-the-scenes care that so many animals receive before they’re ready for adoption. He’s still not available just yet, but he’s growing stronger every day.

We are so grateful to our foster families who make stories like Elliot’s possible. 💙

URGENT! Sweet Magnolia needs a foster! 🌸

Sweet Magnolia has been through a lot in her young life, but she continues to show us every day what it means to be resilient.

After x-rays and specialist consults, it was determined that she needs surgery to repair damage to her hip she sustained during a fall. The procedure recommended for Magnolia is called an FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy), which will remove the damaged part of her hip joint and allow her to heal faster and more comfortably than an amputation. Once she recovers, Magnolia should be able to walk, run, and play like any other dog!

Magnolia will need a calm, supportive environment where she can rest and recover comfortably. She’ll reward her foster with endless affection and the joy of knowing you’re playing a vital role in her healing.

All of Magnolia’s medical care will be covered by Blue Ridge Humane. What she needs most is a safe place and a caring person willing to open their home and heart to her.

If you’ve ever considered fostering, now is the perfect time to make a life-changing difference. Please reach out to us today at [email protected] to learn more about helping Magnolia. 💙
