Wilderness Walk Zoo & Western Town Seasonal zoo now open through Labor Day. Seasonal: Open Mid-May thru Labor Day! We are a 35 acre wildlife park with 300+ exotic and domestic animals and birds.

Hey 27 Roadwork Update:

Wilderness Walk Zoo will always have access from the north/ Hayward throughout the entire scheduled work on Hwy 27.

The zoo remains open to visitors for normal days and hours.

08/03/2026: hard closure between Boylan Rd and Rays Rd as they begin working on the south end of the project installing the first culvert. This means there are barricades closing Hwy 27 on the south end.
Please follow detour signs to get to the zoo if you are planning on visiting from the south of the zoo.

Roadwork has begun on Hwy 27 on 07/29/2026.
As of 9am this morning:

• There is no roadwork coming south from Hayward to the zoo.
•There is a detour coming north from Stone Lake. Please follow the detour signs.

The zoo is still open to visitors. We will share any updates as roadwork progresses over the coming weeks.

Roadwork has begun on Hwy 27 on 07/29/2026.
As of this morning, there is no roadwork coming south from Hayward and is down to a single lane coming north from Stone Lake.

The zoo is still open to visitors. We will share any updates as roadwork progresses over the coming weeks.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to our 2026 Zoo Crew!

To wrap up National ZooKeeper Week, we’d like to thank our animal care team one last time for their continuous hard work, care, and passion for the animals. This special group of people make up the heart and soul of the zoo pouring their (sometimes literal) blood, sweat, and tears into the animals. Through the extreme heatwaves, downpours of rain, emotionally taxing days, or those picture-perfect days of sunshine and happy, healthy animals, these ladies show up every morning ready to face whatever the day brings and we appreciate them!

Happy National Zookeeper Week! As Zookeeper Week continues, we would love to introduce you to our next hardworking animal care staff that is one of two year round staff members:

🌟Keeper Spotlight: Sam

🐾 Zoo Curator and Manager

🐾 Years worked at the zoo: 16 years

🐾 Animal you were most excited to work with coming into your internship: Thinking back all those years ago, I remember being excited to work with everyone. My internship was amazing - I had the opportunity to work with our black bear cubs, skunk kits, fox kits, wolf pup, and fawns on top of our cats (tiger, cougar, bobcat) just to name a few that I was excited to work with so it’s hard to choose since it was such a fantastic experience overall. I’ve loved being here to see everyone grow up since then.

🐾 Which animals surprised you the most that you enjoy working with now: Everyone holds a special place in my heart as I love working with everyone, but first and foremost will always be my love of skunks, specifically Crunch. They get such a bad wrap but are actually these amazing, beneficial animals. Crunch (named after his dad Nestle) was the sweetest boy that I helped bottle raise and was with his entire life until we sadly had to say goodbye due to heart failure at 9 years old. He was the perfect education animal throughout the years with visitors to get folks interested in learning about an animal that can be viewed in a negative light. 🦨 Benny the coati is another one that comes to mind. He was such a fun bottle baby besides being one of the cutest, and has the sweetest personality. He’s always up for a good chat when you check in on him and makes the cutest noises back to you.

🐾 If you could have any animals’s superpower, what would it be: Unfortunately I am not the most graceful creature to walk the planet so I would 100% love to channel deer and their graceful movement abilities. You definitely will not see me running and jumping through the forest like them.

Happy National Zookeeper Week! As Zookeeper Week continues, we would love to introduce you to our next hardworking animal care staff that is one of two year round staff members:

🐾 Education and Events Coordinator/ Supervisor

🐾 Years worked at the zoo: 12 years

🐾 Animal you were most excited to work with coming into your internship: In my first year, I was most excited to work with the skunk kits. 🦨 I had never seen a baby skunk in person so getting to bottle feed them and watch them grow was incredible.

🐾 Which animal surprised you the most that you enjoy working with now: Benny the coati. I had never heard of them before working at Wilderness Walk. He had such a big personality and is a blast to watch and work with.

🐾 If you could have any animals’s superpower, what would it be: Bald eagle vision so I could see without my glasses or contacts! 🦅

🐾 Animal you were most excited to work with coming into your internship: I was most excited to work with the white- tailed fawns.

🐾 Which animal surprised you the most that you enjoy working with now: The goats have been surprisingly fun to work with. Jafar the white- tailed buck is my favorite animal because he’s just like a big dog.

🐾 If you could have any animals’s superpower, what would it be: I would want to be able to fly like a bird.

🐾 Animal you were most excited to work with coming into your internship: I was most excited to work with all of the animals as I worked as morning maintenance last season and did not work directly with the animals.

🐾 Which animal surprised you the most that you enjoy working with now: I really like working with the ferrets, Bow Tie and Penne, because they always make me laugh.

🐾 If you could have any animals’s superpower, what would it be: I would want to glide like the sugar gliders.
