Our hearts are absolutely broken for one of our former K-9 By Design families. 💔

We have followed sweet Iris Hope’s journey for so long—watching, hoping, praying, and rooting for this precious little girl and her family every step of the way. Learning that Iris has gained her angel wings is simply heartbreaking.

Although we no longer service their area, they will always be part of our K-9 By Design family. 🤍

Iris fought an incredibly difficult battle with more strength than such a tiny little girl should have ever needed. Today, she is whole, healed, free from pain, and in the arms of Jesus.

Amanda and Casey are now facing the unimaginable task of laying their baby girl to rest. If you are able, please consider donating to help ease that burden. If you aren’t able to give, please surround Amanda, Casey, Owen, Eliana, and their entire family with prayers as they navigate the days ahead.

🐾 GROOMER EDUCATION: The Science Behind Double Coat Care 🐾

Have you noticed your dog’s coat texture changing lately? Maybe it feels a bit rough, prickly, or seems to mat and tangle much quicker than it used to after a grooming appointment.

Often, this happens when shortcuts are taken on a double coat, causing unintended structural damage to the fur. Today, we want to look at the science behind double coats and why we stick strictly to traditional craftsmanship.

🔍 Understanding the Double Coat

Double-coated dogs (like Labs, Goldens, Huskies, and Shepherds) have a built-in climate control system consisting of two distinct layers:

The Topcoat (Guard Hairs): The harsher, shiny outer layer that shields the skin from weather, sun, moisture, and pests.

The Undercoat: The soft, fluffy under-layer that acts like home insulation—keeping them warm in winter and cool in summer.

Together, this system forms your dog's first line of defense (the integumentary barrier). The coat keeps out dirt, debris, and allergens, while natural coat oils help protect the skin.

🛠️ The Shift Away from Bladed Shortcuts

Bladed deshedding tools (like the FURminator) are incredibly popular throughout the pet industry. You will find them in millions of homes, and many professional groomers rely on them because they pull out massive piles of loose fur in a fraction of the time.

However, as our industry evolves, advanced groomers are shifting away from these tools for double-coated breeds. Why? Because underneath their teeth, these tools contain tiny, hidden razor-like edges.

Instead of just gliding through to grab loose undercoat, these blades can accidentally slice right through the healthy, protective guard hairs. When used repeatedly, this shortcut can cause:

Damaged Coat Texture: It creates frayed ends, leaving the coat rough and making it easier to trap dirt.Faster

Matting: Sliced, jagged hair fibers tangle and hook together much faster than healthy, smooth hair.

🎥 We Might Be Going LIVE… 👀🐾

Alright… I’ve been kicking around an idea, and I think it could be a lot of fun!

I’m thinking about randomly livestreaming some of our grooming appointments so you can see what REALLY happens behind the scenes inside our mobile salon.

No fancy production.
No scripts.
No filters.
Just real life.

Safe to say it’ll probably be pretty boring… I am not entertaining by any means 😂 But if you want to spend a day in my world, come on in! 🐾

Now… before we do this… a few ground rules. 😂

First…

I’m not going live for your entertainment. 😆

I’m not going live to chat with you. 😆

I’m going live to groom your dogs.

I won’t be talking to the camera or trying to be an influencer. 😂

I’ll probably spend the entire appointment talking or singing to your dog instead. 🐾❤️

My focus will ALWAYS be on the pup in front of me. I won’t be watching comments, carrying on conversations, or stopping what I’m doing to interact. If I don’t answer your question during the livestream, please don’t take it personally!

You’re absolutely welcome to ask questions in the comments! While I may not be able to answer them during the live, I’d love to circle back at the beginning of future livestreams and answer questions from the previous one. I think that could be a lot of fun!

Professional grooming isn’t always picture perfect.

Dogs wiggle.

Dogs pull away.

Some decide today’s the day they’re auditioning for the Gymnastics Olympics, while others think they’re starring in WWE Monday Night Raw. 😂🐾

You’ll see us safely supporting a chin, holding a paw steady, repositioning a dog, or using gentle restraint when necessary. To someone who’s never groomed before, some of these techniques may look surprising, but they’re normal, humane handling methods used by professional groomers every day to keep both the dog and groomer safe.

If at any point a pup becomes overly stressed, anxious, or simply needs my full attention, the livestream will end immediately. No questions asked.

Their comfort and safety will ALWAYS come before Facebook.

Lastly…
