On Wednesday June 24th, 2026 at 6:28pm, the Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary team chat received a message that would change the trajectory of our future. “The floor fell in, help, help, HELP’, followed by several more “SOS evacuation” alerts came to our phones from Faithe, an animal care staff member who found part of our ceiling caving in. 💔 The roof over the back middle section of our building collapsed. It was raining inside, there was debris falling, and lives were in danger.
911 dispatchers instructed staff to evacuate all humans from the building immediately and await further direction. Green Bay Metro Fire Department arrived quickly and determined that the heavy rainfall led to excessive accumulation of water on the roof, having no where to drain as the flash flood occurred.
GBMFD dispatched 22 personnel to assist with assessment, securing the scene, consulting with structural engineers, and assisting in the evacuation of cats. SHPS staff and volunteers were allowed to be escorted inside in small groups and in limited time frames to collect cats, meds, and supplies. The community then worked together to pass off carriers and bins through the parking lot and into vehicles. 44 cats were placed into foster care. Unfortunately, the building is now condemned.
