The year was 2006. The state of companion animal welfare across the nation was downright ugly. It was commonplace for 50% of the dogs and cats entering shelters to be losing their lives. Our community was no exception.
Our founder, then 21-year-old, Amanda Reitz knew there had to be another way. With her parents as co-founders, the Reitz's committed to making the welfare of companion animals their life's work. They saw the problem and leaned in. Together they set out on a journey to create positive and lasting change on companion animal welfare in our community and beyond.
HEA Today
You've heard the story before about the successful business that got its start in a garage. Our story has that element too. And now HEA provides direct care for nearly 200 dogs and cats through our Green Bay adoption center location, our growing foster network, and our Sanctuary (rehabilitation and lifetime care facility) located on 40-sprawling acres in Marion, WI.
Vision: A world where the life of every companion animal matters...Every.Single.One.
Mission: To provide a loving home to every companion animal that enters our care...Lifetime Guaranteed.
Pillars: Five simple pillars guide our work.
Adoption
Education
Spay/Neuter
Rehabilitation
Sanctuary (lifetime care)
Our family, impact, and reach have all grown significantly:
On an annual basis, our family of active volunteers share more than 25,000 hours of heart with the mission
We've identified and successfully paired nearly 4,000 pets with their forever families
Our commitment to spay/neuter services has helped "fix" more than 6,000 dogs and cats
We offer community education and engagement programs for people of all ages, placing an emphasis on youth and pet owners (future and current)
Our contact list includes more than 6,000 people across 43 states
We collaborate with other like-minded shelters and rescue groups in the state of Wisconsin and as far south as Corpus Christi, TX
HEA Tomorrow
HEA has aspirations to do big things in the future of animal welfare. Cultivating community, partnerships, collaboration, out-of-the-box thinking, and challenging our own status quo will continue to drive our growth.
If you’re new to HEA, we welcome you!
If you’re already a friend, thank you for the difference you’re making!
Perspective on the Companion Animal Welfare Movement
1.5 million dogs and cats were estimated to have lost their lives in shelters in 2018. This translates to 4,100 per day or 3 per minute. The state of Texas accounted for 220,000 of those lives. We feel it is our duty to assist in areas of significant geographic need.
Locally, the picture is much brighter. In 2018, our hometown was one of the higher performing life-saving communities in the nation. HEA didn’t accomplish this alone, but we’re honored to be an important contributor. The generous outpouring of support that is injected into our pet-loving community makes it happen.
Thank You
We recognize there are many causes and organizations deserving of your support. We are grateful for your consideration and we appreciate that you've taken the time to learn more about our mission.
