Meet Cerese!

This little cutie is the definition of kitten energy, curious, playful, and full of personality. She loves pouncing, chasing, and batting at toys, then curling up for a cozy nap once she’s worn herself out. Like most kittens, this 4-month-old finds fun in just about anything, whether it’s a crinkly ball, a feather wand, or even a cardboard box. Meet Buffy, a beautifully unique Catahoula Leopard Dog/Plott Hound mix with a stunning coat! She’s potty trained and does great in her crate, sleeping soundly through the night with no fuss. She might whine a little when left alone but settles down quickly. While she’s not a fan of the leash, she’s getting the hang of walks and is motivated by food, which helps with training. She does need a little assistance getting into her crate, but once she’s in, she’s fine.

Buffy is a well-mannered 9-month-old in her foster home, no barking, no jumping, just a calm and gentle presence. She gets along wonderfully with kids (ages 4 and 8), always being gentle and patient. She’s a little shy at first but warms up quickly and loves getting attention, especially pets! Although she’s not a lap dog, if you get down to her level, she’ll gladly snuggle in for some cuddles.

With a medium energy level, Buffy enjoys playing, but only if you’re ready to play too! She’ll happily chase stuffies around but might destroy them in the process. She’ll also run outside if you’re running with her, she’s very much in tune with your energy. When it’s time to relax, she’ll curl up in her bed, content to chill beside you.

Buffy is loyal, loving, and smart, and she really adapts to your pace. Whether you’re ready to sit back and relax or get down and play, she’ll match your vibe. Meet Skeeter, an adorable hound/rat terrier mix puppy.

Skeeter loves everyone he meets and gets along well with dogs both big and small. He is incredibly playful and full of puppy energy, always ready for some fun and games before happily soaking up all the love and attention he can get.

This 6-month-old 40lb and growing guy is already showing what a great pup he is by keeping his room nice and clean, a fantastic sign for potty training.

Meet Boone!

Boone is a sweet 1-year-old with the kindest puppy-dog eyes and a heart that just wants to trust. When he first arrived, he was very timid, everything in the house seemed new and a little overwhelming. But in just a week, his personality has started to shine, and he’s becoming playful, happy, and more “puppy-ish” every day.

Boone sleeps through the night and does well in his crate both overnight and while his people are away. Although he’s hesitant to go in at first, he settles quickly with no whining, barking, or destruction. He’s also been accident-free in the house and eats well.

This curious Coonhound/Mix boy loves toys, plushies, balls, and even food puzzles, and he’ll occasionally burst into playful gallops around the house. Walks are one of his favorite things, though he’s still learning leash manners and tends to pull and zig-zag. With a little training, he’ll be a wonderful walking buddy.

Boone is shy when meeting new people, but he warms up beautifully with a little patience. Within days of arriving at his foster home, he was curling up next to his people on the couch, and even trying out life as a lap dog! He enjoys being with his humans but is also content to nap in another room. Boone especially loves his foster’s lab mix, Charlie, who has given him extra confidence.

Boone would do best in a home that can offer him patience as he adjusts, regular walks, and continued training since he’s still young and eager to learn. He hasn’t met children yet, but his gentle, sweet nature suggests he could do well with them.

Meet Potato!

Potato is the perfect mix of playful kitten energy and laid-back charm. This 3-month-old loves string toys, tunnels, ball-track toys, and scratching on cardboard, but she’s also just as happy lounging on a cat tree and watching the world go by.

This little one is friendly, curious, and affectionate. She enjoys being petted, doesn’t mind being picked up, and will happily come running if she sees you giving another cat attention (she doesn’t want to miss out!). Unlike many kittens, Potato isn’t overly mischievous, she rarely needs a “get down from there” reminder.

While her experience with kids and dogs is unknown, her gentle nature suggests she’d likely adjust well, especially with a slow introduction. She’s already great with other cats. Potato may be a little shy at first, but she warms up quickly and would thrive in a variety of homes.

Meet Nikki! A tiny, mighty 3-month-old ball of playful energy!

She may not have met kids yet, but her curious, easygoing nature suggests she’d likely do just fine. Around adults, she’s confident and quick to join in on the fun, though if something feels unfamiliar, she’ll scoot under a hiding spot until she’s sure it’s safe.

Nikki loves being near her person, keeping close like a little shadow. She enjoys pets here and there, especially when she’s winding down, but don’t expect her to be a lap cat just yet, unless she’s really tired! Being picked up isn’t her favorite, though with time and trust that may change.

Playtime is where Nikki shines. Feather wands and toy “prey” are her absolute favorites. You’ll see her crouch low, tail flicking, eyes locked, and then, Pounce! She’ll even rise up on her back legs to “box” at her toys, which is both impressive and hilarious.

She’s quick, feisty, and loads of fun. Despite her playful spirit, she’s also a good listener who doesn’t get into mischief or destruction. Nikki would love a home with another playful cat or even some gentle, fun-loving kids to share her games with.

The queen of cozy, the duchess of downtime, and your future snuggle supervisor! This lovely 11-year-old lady is the definition of sweet and soulful. While she might take a few days to get her bearings in a new space (a queen must assess her realm, after all), once she feels safe, Lucille transforms into your affectionate sidekick, always nearby for head boops, gentle purrs, and warm companionship.

Lucille is in her golden years, which means she's mastered the art of relaxation. She’ll happily lounge in a sunbeam, curl up on your couch, or claim your favorite blanket as her throne. The year was 2006. The state of companion animal welfare across the nation was downright ugly. It was commonplace for 50% of the dogs and cats entering shelters to be losing their lives. Our community was no exception.

Our founder, then 21-year-old, Amanda Reitz knew there had to be another way. With her parents as co-founders, the Reitz's committed to making the welfare of companion animals their life's work. They saw the problem and leaned in. Together they set out on a journey to create positive and lasting change on companion animal welfare in our community and beyond.

HEA Today You've heard the story before about the successful business that got its start in a garage. Our story has that element too. And now HEA provides direct care for nearly 200 dogs and cats through our Green Bay adoption center location, our growing foster network, and our Sanctuary (rehabilitation and lifetime care facility) located on 40-sprawling acres in Marion, WI.

Perspective on the Companion Animal Welfare Movement 1.5 million dogs and cats were estimated to have lost their lives in shelters in 2018. This translates to 4,100 per day or 3 per minute. The state of Texas accounted for 220,000 of those lives. We feel it is our duty to assist in areas of significant geographic need.

Locally, the picture is much brighter. In 2018, our hometown was one of the higher performing life-saving communities in the nation. HEA didn’t accomplish this alone, but we’re honored to be an important contributor. The generous outpouring of support that is injected into our pet-loving community makes it happen.
