Do reptiles feel emotions like optimism or anxiety? A groundbreaking new study says yes—and it’s rewriting what we thought we knew about reptile sentience.
Researchers tested red-footed tortoises using a method often applied to humans and mammals: a cognitive bias test. Tortoises kept in enriched, stimulating environments were more likely to interpret ambiguous situations optimistically—an indicator of a positive emotional state. Even more compelling, the same tortoises displayed lower anxiety in mildly stressful situations, suggesting their moods were not fleeting but long-lasting.
This is the first strong evidence that reptiles, like mammals and birds, can experience enduring emotional states. And because reptiles split from mammals and birds more than 300 million years ago, these findings hint at deep evolutionary roots for mood and emotion across the animal kingdom.
The implications are profound. As reptiles become increasingly common as pets and in zoos, recognizing their emotional complexity could transform how we care for them. It challenges us to reconsider what sentience looks like—and who we think is capable of feeling.

For Dr. Shachar Malka, it has always been a dream to run his own veterinary clinic. Many veterinarians and people would quickly assume that this veterinary clinic would serve dogs and cats, but little did they know that Dr. Malka had even greater plans. For over 15 years, Dr. Malka worked tirelessly with birds. During that time he even became a board-certified avian specialist. He also grew to love other exotic animals.
Dr. Malka was determined to pick the best location to start an exclusive exotic animal veterinary clinic where doctors and technicians were trained to work with all types of animals. Great Neck, NY made perfect sense. There was such a need for an exotic animal emergency and wellness center that Dr. Malka was certain he had chosen the right place.
Dr. Malka made fast work to bring in some amazing staff members and great diagnostic equipment. There is one piece of technology that separates LIBEVC from the rest: a CT machine. This machine allows doctors to get the best picture possible of what is happening within an animal, which helps them make the best diagnosis they can. For exotic animals, this can be life saving. CT scans can make a tremendous difference in the lives of exotic animals due to their delicate nature and (sometimes small) size.
Here at LIBEVC, we provide cutting edge veterinary care for pet birds, exotic mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and any other exotic animals, including wildlife rescued by rehabilitators and sanctuaries. We take every possible measure to give your pets the care they deserve.
We offer emergency services at our hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If your pet is experiencing an emergency after hours, please call (516) 441-2726.
