Meet Paco, a truly special 30+ year old Blue-fronted Amazon parrot who recently underwent a big journey with us. Paco came in with a potential wing injury, and thanks to the incredible dedication of Dr. Lee and our amazing team, we were able to uncover a more complex picture.

Through a thorough physical exam, advanced imaging with a CT scan, and a biopsy, Paco was diagnosed with both squamous cell carcinoma and atherosclerosis. Dr. Lee expertly developed a comprehensive treatment plan that included medications to support Paco's heart and surgical intervention to address the mass on his wing.

This brave little bird underwent a full wing amputation, and today, we're thrilled to celebrate his one-month post-surgery milestone! 🎉 Paco is adjusting remarkably well and charming the whole team. We're so proud of Paco and grateful to be a part of his journey. Sending him lots of love and good health! 🦜💙

🌞 Warm Weather Alert for Our Exotic Friends! 🐰

As the temperatures rise, don’t forget that many of our exotic pets — especially small mammals — are highly sensitive to heat! These small mammals can overheat quickly, even in mild weather, so a few simple precautions can make a big difference.

If you're heading out with your pet, be sure to keep the air conditioning on during car rides, ensure there’s plenty of ventilation in their carrier, and remove any heavy blankets or heat sources. Never leave them unattended in a parked car, even for a short time.

A little extra care during warmer days can help keep your furry friends safe and comfortable. If you have any questions about heat safety for your exotics, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Case spotlight! Meet one of our recent patients: a beautiful Corn Snake who came to us with a month-long history of not eating and some unusual behavior—being more active and energetic than usual. 🐍

Dr. Lee conducted a thorough exam, and after utilizing imaging techniques, including radiographs, ultrasound, and bloodwork, it was determined that our patient had multiple poorly mineralized eggs with concern that the patient was egg bound. Despite supportive care efforts, including vitamin supplementation, our patient was unable to lay the eggs on her own. With the owner’s consent, Dr. Lee performed surgery to remove the eggs.

We’re thrilled to report that the surgery was a success, and this sweet Corn Snake is now recovering well, happily back at home with her loving and dedicated owner. 💖🐍

We’re grateful for the opportunity to provide this level of care and support to our exotic patients. Check out her radiograph.

Case Spotlight: Dr. Lee recently saw a ferret who had been coughing persistently for about a week. While there are many potential causes of coughing in ferrets, Dr. Lee conducted a thorough examination and recommended key diagnostics, including a CT scan and echocardiogram. These tools helped us determine that the coughing was due to heart disease.

Thanks to early detection and the right medical management, our little friend is now feeling much better and doing well at home! Here he is enjoying a special treat for being so good during his follow-up appointment. 🐾

Heart disease in exotic pets is more common than many might think and can often go unnoticed until symptoms appear. That’s why it’s crucial to stay on top of your pet’s health. Regular check-ups are essential for catching issues early and improving their quality of life.

Case spotlight! This brave little bird who came to us on emergency in critical condition after experiencing vomiting and labored breathing. After thorough examination and quick intervention by Dr. Lee, we suspected toxicity from exposure to heavy cooking fumes, a potential danger to our feathered friends. 🍳🦜
Thanks to immediate supportive care, this little bird has made a full recovery and is now doing well at home with their loving family! 💚🌈
This case serves as a reminder to be cautious with household fumes and to keep your pets safe from any harmful toxins. Stay vigilant, and don’t hesitate to reach out if your exotic pet is in need of urgent care.

Our Story

For Dr. Shachar Malka, it has always been a dream to run his own veterinary clinic. Many veterinarians and people would quickly assume that this veterinary clinic would serve dogs and cats, but little did they know that Dr. Malka had even greater plans. For over 15 years, Dr. Malka worked tirelessly with birds. During that time he even became a board-certified avian specialist. He also grew to love other exotic animals.

Dr. Malka was determined to pick the best location to start an exclusive exotic animal veterinary clinic where doctors and technicians were trained to work with all types of animals. Great Neck, NY made perfect sense. There was such a need for an exotic animal emergency and wellness center that Dr. Malka was certain he had chosen the right place.

Dr. Malka made fast work to bring in some amazing staff members and great diagnostic equipment. There is one piece of technology that separates LIBEVC from the rest: a CT machine. This machine allows doctors to get the best picture possible of what is happening within an animal, which helps them make the best diagnosis they can. For exotic animals, this can be life saving. CT scans can make a tremendous difference in the lives of exotic animals due to their delicate nature and (sometimes small) size.

Here at LIBEVC, we provide cutting edge veterinary care for pet birds, exotic mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and any other exotic animals, including wildlife rescued by rehabilitators and sanctuaries. We take every possible measure to give your pets the care they deserve.
