To echo the PSA from our Great Bend Police Department - Ks, summer brings many more people out for outdoor activities and travel, kids out and about on bikes and scooters and new drivers on the road. Luckily this vehicle is stationary, because this new driver hasn't figured out which way to face in the vehicle yet and there's a pedestrian under the vehicle.

But in all seriousness, they gave some great advice-If you're behind the wheel, please take an extra moment to scan intersections, watch for children near roadways, and avoid distractions. If you're a parent, please make sure your children understand the importance of wearing safety equipment and following traffic laws. Every one of us has the ability to make our streets safer through simple choices and good judgment.

Thank you for helping us protect what matters most—our families, our children, and our community.

Sauda the African Lion thinks she's pretty sneaky, can you spot her? Lionesses hunt together and use ambush tactics and fan out to catch their prey. Female lions start stalking at 3 months of age but don't start joining the hunt until they're a year old.

🎣It's a beautiful day for fishing! Piglet and Pooh bear had the opportunity recently to catch their own fish. This is one of many different enrichment activities we provide to the animals. From toys, to fishing, to puzzle feeders, to scents, we offer something different to all of our animals on a regular basis.

🐻Did you know in certain parts of Alaska, Grizzly bears can consume over 6,000lbs of fish a year?!

Did you know our gibbons love toys? Manny loves his plush gibbon toy, affectionately known as Manuelita. Both Manny and Maggie love squeaky dog toys, from hamburgers to pickles, the squeakier the better!

All of the animals at the zoo receive enrichment, some days it's fun toys like these, other days it's an activity to mimic natural behaviors, like the bears catching their own live fish!

👀 Stay tuned! That video is coming soon!

What is the main reason birds end up in our raptor rehabilitation program? In most cases, it’s due to human-related causes such as tree removal during nesting season, vehicle strikes, poisoning, attacks by pets, and sadly, even gunshot injuries.

Sometimes nature plays a role as well. High winds can blow fledglings from their nests, and severe hailstorms may cause injuries.

These two young American Kestrels were found orphaned and brought into our care. They were nearly ready to be on their own but needed a couple more weeks to finish growing their flight feathers and build strength.

Today, they were successfully released back into the wild!

Did you know the zoo is home to 2 species of gibbons? Gibbons are classified as lesser apes, not monkeys. Manny is 16 years old and is a Lar Gibbon and Maggie is 42+ years old, and is a Pileated Gibbon. Both species are endangered in the wild.

Manny had a brain infection prior to moving to the zoo so sometimes his movements are a little wobbly. Maggie is advanced in age and came to us with some malformed fingers. Despite both of their challenges, they move around their exhibit space well and love to chat to visitors. All gibbons have a unique call they use with their partners to call out their territories.

🌡️Don't forget, when temperatures start to get super toasty, the best time to visit the zoo is in the morning. Later in the day many animals are given access to their cooler indoor areas!

Happy World Binturong day!! The zoo is home to Poppy, our 11 year old binturong. These unique critters are found in Southeast Asia and are often referred to as bearcats. They are not related to bears or cats, but are related to fossas and civets. They are omnivores, meaning they eat both meat and plant materials.

They live in forested areas and have a prehensile tail that they use for balance and gripping in the treetops. They also have a special scent gland that smells similar to buttered popcorn, where Poppy's name originates from.

The best time to catch a glimpse of Poppy is late morning, after that she likes to take a nap! Due to her dark, thick coat, on super toasty days she is given access to her cooler indoor area to help keep her comfy!
