With heavy hearts, we share the passing of one of our original founders, Dr. Robert Hirt, a dedicated and pioneering veterinarian.
Dr. Robert Hirt passed away earlier this month at his home in Arizona. He is survived by his beloved wife and three children. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
Dr. Hirt was a proud graduate of Cornell University, Class of 1962, where he earned his degree in veterinary medicine. Following graduation, he began his career in a large animal practice in Machias, where he served the farming community from 1962 to 1973 with skill and compassion.
In 1973, Dr. Hirt joined Dr. Lindsey’s practice, where he worked until 1978. During this time, he became a trailblazer in veterinary medicine by introducing acupuncture as a treatment for animals, an innovative approach that reflected his forward-thinking mindset and deep commitment to improving animal care.
In August 1978, Dr. Hirt took over Southtowns Animal Hospital, continuing and building upon its foundation with his own vision and commitment. Under his leadership, the hospital became a trusted cornerstone of the community, known for its high standard of care and personal attention to both animals and their owners.
Last year, Dr. Hirt had the opportunity to visit the hospital alongside his wife and daughter, seeing firsthand the practice as it stands today. He met the current owner, Dr. Jacobi, and our newest veterinarian, Dr. Hartman—also a fellow Cornell graduate—making the visit a meaningful full-circle moment
Dr. Hirt will be remembered for his compassion, innovation, and lifelong dedication to the health and well-being of animals. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched—both human and animal alike.
We are honored to carry forward the foundation he built and will continue to provide the same level of care and compassion he believed in every day. He will be deeply missed.
