Backwoods Barkers Rescue

Backwoods Barkers Rescue Backwoods Barkers Rescue saves East Texas dogs from streets and shelters, relying solely on fosters, volunteers and community donations.

To get as many animals out of our overpopulated area, we send our dogs to Canada once they have been adopted. At Backwoods Barkers Rescue, we believe every dog deserves a chance to be safe, loved, and cherished. In the backwoods and small towns of East Texas, too many dogs are left to fend for themselves on the streets or face uncertain futures in overcrowded shelters. We step in where hope is fad

ing, rescuing the forgotten, the fearful, and the abandoned. With no facility of our own, we place each dog in the care of dedicated foster families who open their homes and hearts until forever families are found. Our rescue runs entirely on the kindness of others, the volunteers who give their time, the fosters who share their space, and the donors whose generosity keeps food in bowls, paws off the streets, and tails wagging. Together, we’re not just saving dogs - we’re rewriting their stories.

Fern has been found and is secure! She traveled 17 miles!!

Thank you to the My Vernon Shelter and Ashley Teel Rogers for reporting and posting help for Fern.

URGENT!! 🚨🚨

Fern has been lost in Mt Vernon ..she went out the Foster’s doggy door. Fern apparently squeezed through the fence. Fern was microchipped before her foster picked her up on Friday. However, it is not registered yet.
Vet is closed until Monday and we cannot get the paperwork!

Please spread the word to people near Mt Vernon! She just had surgery and did not have on her cone!

Latest monday morning update !! Vet just called and blood work is so much better!! Surgery (amputation) is a go for tomorrow!! Please keep the positive thoughts and prayers up for our miracle boy!! I got to meet him this morning and he is the sweetest thing ever!

Weekend updates were good!! Told perking up. Hopefully today i get an update and surgery tomorrow if he is recovered enough. Bennu is a miracle so far..septic is so deadly.

Bennu was accidentally run over by his owners, but they did not seek medical attention for more than two weeks. By the time he came to us, his bone was protruding, and he was septic. Right now, we don't even know if he will survive the weekend.
We currently owe over $9,000 in vet bills, and Bennu's care is expected to add more than $3,000. Before an amputation can be performed, he has to be strong enough to survive the surgery, and we have to find a way to cover the cost.
He is currently receiving treatment at Healthy Paws Animal Hospital, and we are doing everything we can to save his life. There comes a point in rescue when you know you should say no because you're overwhelmed, but we simply couldn't say no to him.
Because of the number of major medical cases we've taken on recently, we will likely have to pause taking additional major medical cases for a while. The reality is that rescue resources are not unlimited. But Bennu is only one year old, and he deserves a chance.
Please keep Bennu in your thoughts and prayers this weekend. Our hope is that he can fight through the infection, gain enough strength, and make it to his amputation surgery on Tuesday.
Thank you to everyone who continues to stand beside us and these dogs when they need it most. ❤️🐾

Fern, Josie, and Ginger were dumped on a dangerous curve in the middle of nowhere, left to fend for themselves. On Thursday, they were safely trapped along with four other dogs, giving them a second chance at life.
Today was a much different day for these girls—a spa day! 🐾❤️ Clean, safe, and getting the care they deserve, they're already learning that not all humans let you down. Seeing them relax and enjoy a little pampering after everything they've been through is exactly why we do what we do.
Their journey is just beginning, but it's already looking so much brighter. ✨🐶💕
Special thanks to Healthy Paws Animal Hospital !!

Petunia just can't catch a break.
She had finally started doing better, but now she's declining again. After waiting months for her body to heal, we had her spayed on Monday. Since then, we've been back and forth to the vet trying to figure out what's wrong.
The vets have run numerous tests, including X-rays and ultrasounds, but we still don't have answers. Today will be Petunia's third visit this week, and we're worried she may need to be hospitalized through the weekend.
We have fought so hard for this little girl. Through everything she's endured, she's never given up, and she's been blessed with the most amazing foster mom. It feels like every possible obstacle has been thrown in Petunia's path, yet she keeps fighting.
Right now, we need prayers, positive thoughts, and help with her medical expenses.
Petunia will be heading to Healthy Paws within the next hour. If you'd like to help, donations can be called directly into the clinic at 903-845-2293.

Every donation, prayer, share, and kind thought means the world to Petunia and to all of us who love her. Please help us give this sweet girl every chance possible. ❤️🐾

A friend called about 4 small dogs dumped along with some babies. We found 8 total. That Crazy Dog lady took the mom and her four babies but we need fosters for the other three adults. They all seem young and are very sweet...super sweet. If you can help please message us. Fosters only.

Just a little over a week ago, Kiki was fighting for her life. Thanks to the tender loving care of Nancy Wylie and the team at Healthy Paws Animal Hospital, she's now well on her way to recovery!
Kiki is finally healthy enough to be around other dogs, so she's moving in with me. Despite being thrown from a car and left to fend for herself, she still trusts and loves people. Her sweet spirit has never wavered.
Kiki will be a longer-term foster while we wait for her adult teeth to come in and determine what dental care she may need. But one thing is certain—she will never be hurt again.
Life is about to change for this little peanut, and it's only going to get better from here.
A huge thank you to Nancy for not giving up on her and for helping save her life. Kiki's future is bright!

Two years ago, this boy was adopted when he was still in rough shape. His new family knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy, but they saw past his condition and gave him the chance he deserved.
I can't find his original intake photo, but this picture shows the incredible transformation from two years ago to today.
Many of you may remember him as Baby New Year from the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center. Today, he's known as Sal, and he's living his very best life in Canada.
Stories like Sal's remind us why rescue matters. Sometimes the most broken dogs just need someone willing to believe in them. His family gave him that chance, and look at him now—healthy, loved, and thriving.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in his journey, from the shelter staff, his amazing foster to his adopters. This is what a happily-ever-after looks like. ❤️🐾

💕Lucario needs a foster💕

Sometimes in life, you meet a dog who is beyond special. It's hard to explain.

A while back, Leigh Ann Lea Colley and I started getting messages about a neighborhood dog who had been dumped and that no one could catch. We suspect little 10-pound Pip had been dumped there with him. Usually when a dog gets dumped, people sadly look the other way. Not this neighborhood.

Everyone rallied to help. And when I say everyone, I mean everyone.

People worked to befriend him, watched out for him, and helped us try to get him safe. Eventually, Leigh Ann and I were able to trap him, and he went to the shelter. He was absolutely petrified there and completely shut down. We felt responsible for him, so we busted him out of the shelter and started looking for another option.

One of the neighbors had a friend who agreed to foster him—an older gentleman. We worried it might be too much, but Lucario thrived there.

Then today, I got a call. Lucario's foster dad had to be rushed to the hospital.

We immediately started scrambling to come up with a plan. None of us had room. Leigh Ann headed to the trailer park to pick up Lucario, but when she arrived, he was nowhere to be found.

Panic set in.

We were told that many people in the neighborhood regularly walked him and looked after him. We started imagining the worst—that when the ambulance came, Lucario had gotten scared and escaped.

Then Leigh Ann spotted him.

He was being walked by a neighborhood kid who walks him often.

Think about that for a minute.

How many dogs are so loved that no matter where they go, people fall in love with them? That's rare anywhere, but especially here.

Lucario went from a dog who had likely never known love or kindness to a dog loved by an entire community.

And if that doesn't show the power of rescue, second chances, and good people, I don't know what does.
