Ever heard hunters talk about “slippage”? Here’s the scoop:

Slippage = Hair literally coming off the hide.

Causes include: heat, bacteria, improper storage, or leaving it too long before getting it to the tannery.

Once it starts, it’s almost impossible to save the hair.

Other common hide problems:

Soft spots or rot – Bacteria start growing the moment the deer is shot.

Strong odor – Caused by bacterial growth.

Cracking – If the hide dries too fast without proper prep.

Best Practices:
✅ Cool it immediately – Keep in a cooler or on ice right after the shot.
✅ Keep it dry – Moisture speeds up bacteria growth.
