Huge congratulations to friend and training partner, Beth Howland, and Sawyer for finishing their OTCH (Obedience Trial Championship) today at the Mountain States Obedience Club trial. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it!

Thank you to everyone who came out for the obedience trial today. Lots of good runs and some great proofing opportunities. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help work! I couldn’t do it without you!

A great warm-up opportunity the weekend before the Mountain States Obedience trial!

I am a “less is more” believer when it comes to verbal cues. Meaning, I don’t use multiple commands for one desired behavior. For my dogs, heel position is “close”, it does not matter if I’m standing still or moving. It also means attention and engagement. I do not use, for example, “get in, watch” for a set-up and “close” for motion.

One of the first questions I ask new students is “What is your heel position word?” And it’s amazing to me how many people have to think before they answer this question. If YOU have to think about it, how do you expect your dog to respond quickly?

Here is a short video of Nyxa (9 months old) testing her understanding of “close” when I give her the verbal cue…without any extra body language help.

The balance of drive and precision is always a precarious one…but drive should always come first. There is plenty of time to tighten things up, but Ms. Legs is starting to find her style. ❤️

I had posted this video on my Canine Craft Works page, but I wanted to post it here as well. I remember when I was starting out and I had no idea how to size my dog for a dumbbell. As I have continued to train, I have also started fitting my personal dogs' dumbbells much more snuggly than when I first started.

You can't avoid ALL problems with a proper fit, but you can improve your dog's chances of being successful!

I think she's getting it!

Dumbbell proofing or weave pole proofing?
6 months ago, this dog wouldn’t hold her dumbbell. Today, while practicing her retrieves, she came back through the nearby weave poles! She even did it again so the owner could record it! 🤣

Here is a first look at the BRAND NEW, comprehensive AKC obedience trial tracking software. This is a web-based app (so not in the app store), but it functions exactly like an app and can be added to your mobile device home screen just like an app interface.

Track your dog's scores by trial, by class and exercise, by judge, everything I could think of!! You can even add the heeling pattern by drawing it directly onto the screen and, when you have an upcoming show, search by judge in your database to see past heeling patterns.

It even automatically calculates OTCH and OM points!

The app has a limited, free version for you to try out and see if you like it before purchasing.

Please contact me with any questions or if you find any bugs that I couldn't find!

I will be adding some "how to" videos, but (I think) it is pretty easy to figure out. :)
