Furry Angels Dachshund Rescue officially became incorporated on 2/25/2014. We were granted an effective date of exemption, February 25, 2014.

Most pet owners have never heard of New World screwworm, yet it’s one of the most destructive parasites affecting animals. Unlike typical maggots that feed on dead tissue, screwworm larvae invade and feed on living tissue. Combined with the fact that a single female fly can lay hundreds of eggs in or near a wound, a minor injury can quickly become a serious medical concern.

With confirmed New World screwworm cases in Mexico, Texas, and New Mexico, and concerns about spread to neighboring states, pet parents should know the warning signs, prevention and treatment strategies.

To help protect your pet in high-risk areas:

🪰 Check your pet daily for wounds, cuts, swelling, and skin irritations. Screwworm flies are attracted to open wounds, tick bites, ear infections, hot spots, surgical incisions, and other areas of damaged skin.

🪰 Keep all wounds clean, protected, and treated promptly. Any cut, scratch, or skin lesion should be monitored closely and never left unattended.

🪰 Know the warning signs of infestation. Watch for swelling, discharge, a foul odor, excessive licking, pain, or a wound that appears to be getting larger instead of healing. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice any of these signs.

🪰 Use fly-control measures and repellents consistently, especially if your pet has a wound or recent surgical site.

PSA time! Pictured below is a retractable leash. It has a button that you can push to lock the length or you can let the dog run out, often up to 25-30 feet. In the last 3 days, we have handled multiple dog bite incidents where dogs were on this type of leash. The problem is, once the dog is 20 or more feet away from you, you have absolutely no way to "reel" the dog back in. If you try, you can very easily get a serious burn to your hands from the leash. Basically, you have no control over your dog at all when it is that far from you, period. We have had dogs killed by cars when the button on the leash broke and the dog ran into the street. When we deal with problems involving these leashes, we instruct people to throw them away! When people donate these leashes to us, we THROW THEM AWAY! You can call it retractable, flexi, adjustable, etc., but WE call them problems waiting to happen.

Please use a standard 6 foot leash when walking your dog in a public area and in close proximity to other dogs and people. This will help you to properly control your dog and keep everyone safer!

Finally! Hard to keep this guy down.

Tim is home, and the surgery went well. They ended up pulling five teeth. We'd like to say he's resting comfortably, but Tim has other ideas. He's trying to walk around even though he's still pretty unsteady, and he seems convinced he should keep eating. We're keeping a close eye on him and hoping he settles down and gets some much-needed rest as he recovers.
Again, we'd like to thank everyone who has supported Tim and helped make this dental procedure possible. Your generosity, kindness, prayers, and encouragement have meant so much to us. We are truly grateful for the love you've shown our boy. Thank you for making this all possible for Tim, no more pain! ❤️🐾
