⚠️ **Blue-Green Algae Alert: Protect Your Pets This Summer** 🐾💚

As the weather warms up, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can grow in ponds, lakes, rivers, and other slow-moving water. While it may look like harmless green scum or paint floating on the surface, it can produce toxins that are **extremely dangerous—and even fatal—to pets**.

🐶 **Keep your pet safe by:**
• Avoiding water that looks green, blue-green, or has a thick surface scum.
• Preventing your pet from drinking or swimming in suspicious water.
• Rinsing your pet immediately with clean water if they come into contact with algae (while protecting yourself from exposure).
• Always bringing fresh drinking water for your pet on outdoor adventures.

🚨 **Signs of blue-green algae poisoning may include:**
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Excessive drooling
• Weakness or stumbling
• Difficulty breathing
• Muscle tremors or seizures
• Collapse

If you suspect your pet has been exposed, **seek veterinary care immediately.** Fast treatment can make a critical difference.

Do not be angry if you see our name on the supporters of Miranda’s Rescue page. We are supporters; of the hundreds of animals that our practice has spayed, neutered, given medical care, and supported through humane euthanasia when deemed medically appropriate. Supporting the animals does not mean we support what has been unfolding at Miranda’s Rescue. Supporting the animals means that we have been helping law enforcement when and where we can.

Be angry that not every animal at the rescue was given the benefit of a veterinarian examination and treatment. Because we are.

Be angry that not every animal was given the oversight of a licensing board or animal control. Because we are.

Be angry that hundreds, if not thousands, of animals were moved into our community and then cruelly removed from us without the community’s knowledge. Because we are.

And this last one hits the hardest. Because if there is one privilege we hold in the highest as veterinarians, it is our duty to end a life with as little pain, fear and trauma as possible.

We do not provide support to Shannon Miranda and what is being discovered in our community. However, an animal brought to our attention from Miranda’s Rescue in need of care will get it. Because that is who needs our support the most.

🌟 Welcome Dr. Anna Riedl! 🌟

We're excited to introduce the newest veterinarian joining our practice, Dr. Riedl!

A California native originally from Southern California, Dr. Riedl completed both her undergraduate and veterinary education at UC Davis, where she studied Animal Science and Spanish and focused on Livestock Medicine. Her passion for Dairy Medicine—particularly organic and regenerative farming practices—ultimately led her to Humboldt County.

After graduating from veterinary school in 2022, Dr. Riedl spent two years working as a mixed dairy veterinarian in Oregon before taking her career overseas to Victoria, Australia. There, she further developed her expertise in pasture-based dairying and pasture management while working with dairy producers in a unique agricultural environment.

When she's not working with animals, Dr. Riedl enjoys running, yoga, hiking, and surfing. She also has a special place in her heart for senior cats and has opened her home to several older kitties in need of love and comfort over the years.

We're delighted to have Dr. Riedl join our team and bring her knowledge, experience, and passion for animal health to the communities we serve. We hope you'll join us in giving her a warm welcome! 🐄🐾💙

We’ve been waiting a while to announce this. HCSO is proud to introduce our new Feline Unit. 🐈‍⬛🐾

Specially selected for their independence and stealth, these highly trained felines will assist with surveillance from elevated vantage points, laser pointer tracking, and quiet movement during operations. The unit has also demonstrated strong performance in suspect observation and perimeter awareness.



In all seriousness, it is breeding season. Spaying and neutering helps prevent unexpected litters and reduces the number of kittens needing homes. Call the Humboldt County Animal Shelter at 707-840-9132 and they can help connect you with local resources!
