Wow! November is already here. It sure hasn’t felt much like Fall this year. There were only four days with below average temperatures last month. The rest were all above average making for the fourth hottest October here in DFW since record keeping began. While there have been a couple of chilly mornings, the days remained in the upper seventies and lower eighties and have been perfect farming weather.

We haven’t had much rain either. October is supposed to be our second highest rainfall month, but only four inches fell and that was over two days. The outlook for November is below average precipitation. It looks like irrigation is in the works so a productive Fall will come to pass.

We spent this past Saturday at Joppy Mommas Farm in South Dallas for the 3rd Annual High Strides Against Diabetes 5k and Fun Run. We partner with Joppy Mommas to hold the race every year, with the race being at Opal’s Farm next year. November is Diabetes Awareness month. Many of our neighbors live with diabetes and have limited choices regarding their food because fresh, local produce is unavailable. We hope to educate our communities about the importance of healthy food choices and exercise to reverse the effects of diabetes. We are so thankful for all the participants who came out Saturday to make the event a success – even with the overcast skies and possibility of short rain showers.

November is a great time to come out and volunteer at the farm. It’s not to hot, the days are sunny, and it’s already time to think about the seasons ahead.

We'd like to say good bye to our Volunteer Coordinator, Stacey Harwood. We are grateful for the last five years she's been with Opal's Farm. She served through a lot of ups and downs at the farm. She always made sure our volunteers enjoyed their time there. She'll be missed. We wish her well in her new endeavors.

Thank you Stacey!

This was a great way to start the day. It's a bit long but well worth the time.

Almost November!

Fall always seems to be a time of introspection for me. The weather gets cooler and although it’s really busy at the farm, I seem to naturally bend toward refection. I often wish I still had …
