Pug Partners of Nebraska is a 501c3, non-profit organization comprised of dedicated volunteers who are committed to rescuing and re-homing pugs in need. We believe that all pugs deserve a chance to be loved and to love a human companion. A majority of our rescue pugs come from what is called a puppy mill (a mass breeding facility), we are very dedicated to these special dogs and providing

them with the life they deserve. Our main purpose is to provide all of our rescue pugs with a loving foster home, quality dog food, medical care, and any other need that they may have while in our care. Our ultimate goal is to place each pug into a forever family that will continue to show the pug love, attention, and provide the care that they each deserve. We strive to educate our adopters and the public about our wonderful pug breed. Although pugs are quite different from most breeds, we want to show people how amazing these small dogs can be, and how they are great companions. Vision Statement

Pug Partners of Nebraska provides a service to the community for pugs in need, by rescuing purebred pugs that are in shelters, puppy mills, whose owners can no longer care for them, and for those who have become lost/abandoned and to place them in a loving and safe permanent home where they will be loved and cared for as companion pets. To accomplish our mission, Pug Partners of Nebraska strives to:

Rescue adoptable pugs from a variety of situations and place them into loving foster homes until their permanent home can be found
Treat all pugs like our own, by giving them behavioral and medical attention that they need
Act as advocates by protecting and advancing the pug breed by encouraging responsible pug ownership and by rescuing pugs from unsafe or abusive situations
Carefully screen all volunteers to ensure that the most knowledgeable pug experts in the community are on board with pug Partners’ mission
Help reduce the pet over-population crisis by ensuring that all pugs adopted through our rescue are spayed or neutered
Have useful information available to those interested in adding a pug to their family
Provide the community with superior knowledge of the pug breed cooperate and network with other animal rescue organizations in the community and world-wide
Incorporate programs to help the rescue succeed and involved more volunteers.

🐾 Pearl, the great escape artist 🐾

Just when we thought we'd seen it all — Pearl had other plans. 😂 This little houdini decided her enclosure was more of a suggestion than a boundary, and we caught the whole great escape on video. Watch till the end — you will NOT believe how she does it.

But here's the part that really gets us: Pearl is settling in. She's testing limits, she's getting curious, she's acting like a dog who finally feels safe enough to be a little bit naughty. After everything she's been through, that mischief is a gift. It means she's healing.

And today, we get the rest of her vet results — another piece of the puzzle in making sure Pearl gets exactly what she needs to thrive.

We're seeing pugs like Pearl come back to life, one foster home, one vet visit, one ridiculous escape attempt at a time. That's what the Say Yes campaign is for.

Pearl update: from terrified stray to snoring in a fluffy bed.

Two days ago, Pearl had nothing. No name, no history, no idea what was coming next. We said yes anyway — to a starved, frightened pug with a story we didn't know and couldn't predict.
Look at her now.

Her first night in foster care, she slept like a log (a little CBD helped take the edge off). Since then, she's been doing what we hoped she would: settling in. Cuddling with her foster mom. Grooming her foster sister, another pug, like they've known each other for years. For a dog who'd just been abandoned and possibly abused, we're in awe at how loving and trusting she is already.

She saw the vet yesterday. Some of her labs are back, and they're normal. The rest come back tomorrow. The vet estimates she's somewhere between 1 and 2 years old, and she weighs a petite 14 lbs. We're keeping an eye on the fact that she's drinking more water than expected — just one more piece of the puzzle we're watching closely.

We still don't know much about Pearl's story before her rescue this week. We may never know all of it. But here's what we do know: she's safe. She's loved. She's healing. And every single day, someone is showing up for her.

That's the Say Yes promise. We don't wait for the full picture before we act. We don't need a perfect history or a guarantee of how things will go. We say yes to the dog in front of us — starved, scared, unknown — and we figure out the rest together.
Pearl said yes back, in her own way: by falling asleep in a soft bed, by trusting a foster sister, by letting people hold her after a life that gave her no reason to.

She was supposed to be let out the door and left behind.

At 6:15 this morning, we got the call: a stray pug needed to be surrendered. Her owner was just going to let her loose outside. Someone stepped in and grabbed her first.

In the 24 hours since, that rescuer has learned what they could. This little girl has clearly been starved. There's reason to believe she's been abused. She's had puppies at some point — we don't know when, or what happened to them. She had a sister once too, who reportedly turned on her and attacked her. The sister went somewhere else. This girl had nowhere to go.

We don't know her name. We don't know if she's ever seen a vet. We don't know anything for sure about the life she's lived until now.

What we do know: she's sweet. She doesn't bark or whine in her crate. She's house-trained. She's good with other dogs. When she met some new dogs today, she just wagged her tail. She'll let you hold her. She'll let you pet her. After everything, she still wants to be loved.

At 1:00 today, one of our volunteers got in the car and started driving. Four hours there. A stranger handed over a terrified, starving little dog who flinched at a world that hadn't been kind to her. Four hours back. That same volunteer is now her foster.
We said yes.

That's what Pug Partners does. We don't ask if there's room in the budget or the schedule. We ask if a pug needs help. If the answer is yes, we figure out the rest.

She has a name now: Pearl.

She sees the vet tomorrow morning, for maybe the first time in her life. She has a soft place to sleep tonight. She has people who already love her, less than 24 hours after they met her.

This is what Say Yes means. Every dog like Pearl needs someone to say yes first — before the vet bills, before the unknowns, before any guarantee it'll be easy. Pearl's road to safety started because one person said yes, and then PPN said yes too.

Imagine never knowing stillness.

Not once. Not as a puppy. Not ever. Just your own body, pulling you in circles you didn't choose, while a brain drowning in fluid told your legs to keep moving, keep moving, keep moving.

That was every day of Taffy's life before us. Three years of it. And no one — not one person in her entire life before Pug Partners — had ever investigated what was causing it.

She had already had several litters. She had ears too infected to see through, eyes her own lids were slowly destroying, and a nose too narrow to draw a real breath. She had hydrocephalus that had never been diagnosed, a brain under so much pressure that her body could not stop circling. And she had spent all of that time trusting people anyway.

On November 7th, Pug Partners and her veterinary team said yes one more time — and put her on the table.

Because of her hydrocephalus, every decision required extra precision: anesthesia protocols coordinated with her neurologist, timing planned to the minute. And in one extraordinary day, they gave her things she had never had:

✅ Open nares — so she could finally breathe through her nose
✅ A cleared airway — her elongated palate resected, her enlarged tonsils removed
✅ Eyes that close properly — entropion repaired in both lids
✅ A mouth free of pain — teeth with underlying cysts extracted

A brain full of fluid. Six procedures. She came through anesthesia and did fantastically.

Her vet notes, from her very first visit to her last, have always said the same thing: "Very sweet girl."

She never stopped being that. Even when her body was working against her. Even when no one had answers. Even on the table.

Taffy now lives her best life with her forever family. She'll always have hydrocephalus. She may always carry a slight head tilt. But she is still. She is breathing. She is loved. We weren't sure what her life would be like, but in this video you can see Taffy responding to her name for the first time - something we weren't sure would ever happen!

We have to be honest with you.

When Taffy came to us, we didn't know if we could help her. We didn't know what was wrong. We didn't know how much it would cost, or how long it would take, or whether all of it would be enough. We just knew that she was in front of us, and she needed someone to try.

She was three years old, had already had several litters, and she couldn't walk in a straight line. Her head tilted hard to the right, her body circling constantly — not because she wanted to, but because she couldn't stop. Ears so infected her vets couldn't see her eardrums. Eyes being damaged by her own inward-rolling lids. A nose too narrow to breathe through. We were scared for her. We'll admit that.

We sent her for an MRI. What came back broke our hearts — and finally gave us answers.

Taffy has hydrocephalus. Where a normal dog's brain fills their skull, Taffy's is dominated by fluid pressing against thinned brain tissue. She had been spinning in circles because her brain had been under pressure her entire life. This wasn't something that happened to her. She was born into it.

The MRI alone cost over $2,700 and her total care was nearly $4,000. But we needed to know, because Taffy deserved a team that understood what they were up against.

And through every exam, every blood draw, every recheck along the way, the vet notes said the same thing:

"Bright, alert, responsive. Very sweet girl."

She never stopped trusting us, even when we didn't have answers yet.

So we kept going. We said yes. 🐾

Two weeks. Fourteen days without a single seizure. We were starting to let ourselves hope.

Then yesterday, Donny seized. And this morning, on the way to Wine & Howl — finally going somewhere fun for once in his little life — he seized again.

This is the reality of loving a dog like Donny. The good days are so good. And then the ground shifts.

He was tied to a dog house. Outside. Alone. Seizures shaking his body with no one to hold him, no medication, no one coming back. That was his life before Pug Partners said yes.

Now he has a foster family who documents every episode, learns every warning sign, and holds him through every hard moment. He has a veterinary team adjusting his medications with patience and precision. He has people who notice when he goes two weeks without a seizure, and who refuse to give up when that streak ends.

What he still needs is a neurology consultation and an MRI. Because we are not guessing at his care. We are not cutting corners. The appointment with his neurologist is next week. We're looking forward to learning more and diving into the next stage of his care.

He was tied to a dog house outside. Seizures shaking his small body. No medication. No plan. No one coming back.

That's how Donny's story almost ended. Here's how it continues.

When Donny came to Pug Partners, he had uncontrolled seizures and no real plan to address them. We don't know how long he suffered alone out there, or how many seizures shook him with no one beside him. We just know that the moment he came through our doors, that changed.

We immediately brought him to one of our veterinary partners for a full evaluation: blood panel, physical examination, the works. What we found only deepened our concern. On top of the seizures, Donny has a luxating patella (a dislocated kneecap) and needs a dental. This little boy has been carrying so much.

At first, the seizures came every few weeks. Then every day. Then multiple times a day. Through it all, his foster family have refused to leave his side. They document every seizure, learn his triggers and warning signs, and hold him through the hard moments. And Donny is finally learning what it feels like to be loved without conditions.

Pug Partners, his fosters, and our veterinary team work closely together, carefully adjusting his medications and supplements one step at a time, never rushing, never overwhelming Donny's system. Every change is intentional. Every decision puts his comfort first.

Our next step is a neurology consultation and an MRI. We are not giving up on him.
