Soil blocks are soil that has been compressed into a block. The tool used to form the larger block shown has an inserted attachment that leaves an impression in the block. Depending on the size and shape of the attachment, the impression can create different depths or leave space so smaller blocks can be potted up into bigger blocks.
An experiment performed by Practical Farmers of Iowa found that seedlings grown in soil blocks performed better than those grown in pots.
