Soil blocks are soil that has been compressed into a block. The tool used to form the larger block shown has an inserted attachment that leaves an impression in the block. Depending on the size and shape of the attachment, the impression can create different depths or leave space so smaller blocks can be potted up into bigger blocks.

An experiment performed by Practical Farmers of Iowa found that seedlings grown in soil blocks performed better than those grown in pots.

Plant Sale this Saturday and Sunday (May 9 and 10) from 10am - 2pm at 3802 N 24th St. This is an outdoor event rain or shine.

To make up for the April sale being canceled prices have been reduced. Small pots are $2 for veggies and flowers and $3 for herbs and perennials. Seedlings in soil blocks are $1 less than the potted price.

Mind you, some of these plants are for the farm.

The greenhouse is filling up nicely so help me move some out and into your gardens and containers. This Saturday April 25 from 10am-2pm seedlings of herbs, select veggies, and prairie will be available at 3802 N 24th St.

This sale will have the lowest prices of the season. Instead of plastic pots, they’re going home with you in soil blocks! This first sale features:
Rosemary - Lavender - Greek Oregano - Orange Thyme - Chives - Broadleaf Sage - Mint - Lemon Balm - Chamomile - Premier Kale - Georgia Southern Collards - Golden Acre Cabbage - Early Jersey Cabbage - Butterfly Milkweed - Old Field Goldenrod - Purple Prairie Clover

All varieties have been hardened off and even spent a night outside when it was below 40 degrees. The warmer weather varieties (tomatoes, peppers, etc) will be available at the May 9 and May 10 sale dates.

Had an inspirational time presenting about Black Chick Farm as an urban farm, education, and consulting company to middle school students at the GO! Youth Summit organized by

Participants sowed seeds to grow at home and took home herb seedlings of their choice. They asked some insightful questions, shared their experiences, and won some prizes.

Wanted to say a quick THANK YOU to for organizing the I Love Growth and Plants market, the volunteers for helping it run smoothly, the vendors for bringing the vibe, and the attendees for the love and support! It was such an uplifting and relaxing environment. A great start to my market season. I really appreciate everyone who stopped by the booth to talk seeds, seedlings, and growing with me.

I learned to operate a tractor this weekend while preparing the land at Irene’s Farm in North Omaha. I was really nervous (them thangs expensive) but it was not at all as difficult as I built it up in my mind. It was actually really fun! I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep growing my skills and overcoming doubt. I can do difficult things. Ain’t no stoppin me now😉
