As someone who has cleaned stalls, turned out horses, and worked as a groom…

There is nothing better than hearing that soft nicker when you start walking toward them.

It doesn’t matter how long the day has been.
That sound makes it worth it.

We all have those special ones 🤎

Which horse always nickers for you?

Not every nicker means affection, and not every vocalisation is about us.

Horses nicker for many reasons. Anticipation of food, curiosity, herd contact, learned association, or social greeting. Context matters.

But when a horse consistently offers a low, soft nicker alongside relaxed posture, soft eyes, and an approach that is not driven or demanding, that is social recognition.

It is a communication offered within their species specific language. A way of saying, I know you. I have placed you. You belong in my awareness.

As always, we read the whole horse, not just the sound.

Recognition is built through repeated, safe experiences. And when it is genuine, it feels quiet.

Real Life with an EMS Horse 🤎

When I first heard “Equine Metabolic Syndrome,” I felt a wave of guilt. At this time, Reuben, was my first horse and I felt responsible and then some.

Did I miss something?
Was I feeding wrong?
Did I cause this?

The hardest part wasn’t the diagnosis.
It was realizing this would be lifelong management.

Here’s what changed everything for us:

Instead of reacting out of fear, I focused on learning and consistency.

• I stopped guessing at hay and became more mindful about sugar levels.
• I avoided drastic feed changes overnight.
• I committed to steady movement — even if it was just hand walking in the cold.
• I started truly monitoring body condition instead of “he looks fine.”

And for those who always ask — here’s what his feeding looks like now:

• Controlled portions of low NSC forage
• Slow feeder to prevent spikes
• Whole Ingredient Supplements
• No unnecessary extras

Nothing extreme. Just consistent.

He isn’t cured.
He’s managed.

And he’s comfortable, bright, and living a good life — and that’s what matters most.
