Meet the New World screwworm detector dogs! 🐾

Trained at USDA’s National Detector Dog Training Center in Georgia, these highly skilled canine teams are stationed at the Douglas, AZ port of entry to inspect livestock for signs of New World screwworm (NWS).



These USDA detector dogs aren’t generalists or law enforcement - NWS detection is their sole focus. Their specialized training prepares them to work alongside USDA veterinarians at the southern border, providing an extra layer of protection for livestock as cattle trade resumes.

There are many tools in the toolkit for preventing and treating New World screwworm (NWS). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized and conditionally approved drugs available for NWS infestation and prevention. Animal owners and livestock producers are advised to contact their veterinarian to receive direction on the appropriate product for their animals.
