Next up for Immunization Awareness Month: Leptospirosis
This bacterial disease can affect both animals and people. It spreads through contact with infected urine or contaminated water, soil, or food. Early signs include fever and muscle aches, but if untreated, it can progress to organ failure and even death. The good news, it is preventable with a vaccine and treatable with antibiotics if caught early. Keeping your pet vaccinated helps protect your whole family!

Next up for Immunization Awareness Month: Parvo. This highly contagious virus spreads through infected f***l material and can survive in the ground for years. It attacks the intestines, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and in many cases, death (even with expensive hospitalization and supportive care). Puppies are especially at risk, but unvaccinated older dogs can get Parvo too. The best protection is prevention. Keeping your pet up-to-date on vaccines saves lives!

Next up for National Immunization Awareness Month: Distemper. It is a serious illness we can help prevent with a simple vaccine!

Distemper is a serious and often deadly virus that spreads easily between dogs. Early signs can look like cold symptoms like fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, and discharge from the eyes and nose. But it can quickly progress to neurological symptoms like seizures, muscle twitching, and paralysis. There is no cure, only supportive care, which is why vaccination is the best protection for your pet.

Meet Iggy, the tiny chihuahua with a huge heart. She was surrendered to our amazing friends at URGIVET Emergency Vets of Madison, and Kristy there instantly thought of our very own Christina, a well-known chihuahua lover here at FAH. Iggy was in rough shape and battling cancer, but with Christina, Dr. McCary, and Urgivet’s care, she’s now living her best, happiest life. We’re so thankful for our continued partnership with Urgivet and their dedication to animals in our community.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and we’re kicking it off with one of the most important vaccines your pet can receive: the Rabies vaccine.

Rabies is a deadly virus that affects the brain and can be spread through saliva even without a bite. In Mississippi, pets must be vaccinated every 3 years. If exposed, vaccinated pets get a booster and are monitored, while unvaccinated pets face strict isolation or euthanasia. Protect your pet (and yourself) by keeping their rabies vaccine up to date!

This Mississippi heat is getting HOT! Heatstroke can become deadly in minutes, especially during the hot summer months. Spotting the signs early can make all the difference.

If you suspect heatstroke, act fast: Move them to a cool place, wet their body with cool water, and get to a vet ASAP.

As families head back to school, pets are often left wondering where everyone went, and that shift in routine can lead to some behavior changes. Here's how to help your furry family members adjust:

• Watch for separation anxiety – Try easing the transition with extra playtime before you leave and calming enrichment toys during the day.

• Keep backpacks and lunchboxes out of reach – Foods like grapes, chocolate, and sugar-free gum can be toxic, so be sure to store bags up high and zipped tight.

• Stick to a daily routine – Pets thrive on consistency. Try to keep feeding, potty breaks, and walks at the same times each day to help them feel more secure.

• Schedule checkups and vaccines – With summer chaos behind us, it’s a great time to catch up on wellness visits, boosters, and dental care.

Need help with behavior changes, anxiety medication, or want to book a checkup? Give us a call, we’re here for you and your pets every step of the school year.
