Meet Johnny "Randy" Cross, one of our Neurologists. 🧠

Johnny Cross was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and then moved to Blacksburg, Virginia at the age of four. He attended Blacksburg Middle and High School where he played football, basketball, and soccer. He received his Bachelor of Science from Virginia Tech in 2002 majoring in biology with minors in both chemistry and entomology. He then attended Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2007.

After graduation, he continued his training as a rotating intern at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in New Jersey. Knowing for a long time he had a love for neurology/neurosurgery, he then completed his residency in neurology/neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania in 2011. He has several publications and has presented at the national level as well. Although interested in all aspects of veterinary neurology/neurosurgery, Dr. Cross is particularly interested in epilepsy, intervertebral disc disease, tumors of the nervous system, and infectious/inflammatory central nervous system diseases.

Although not a Midwest native, Dr. Cross is so happy to have chosen to build his career and live in Indiana. As the first neurologist in Indianapolis, he loves the unique and meaningful relationships he has built with general practitioners in the area. Dr. Cross lives here with his wife, two daughters, two dogs, one cat, and a horse.

Meet the OG of our Ophthalmology Department. 👁️

Dr. Carl Budelsky is from southern Illinois and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois. He completed an ophthalmology internship in Illinois and a fellowship in ocular pathology at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Budelsky returned to the University of Illinois for an ophthalmology residency. He is board-certified and has practiced in Indiana since 2005. His professional interests include cataract surgery, ocular pathology, corneal grafts, and ocular manifestation of systemic diseases. Dr. Budelsky enjoys living in Indianapolis with his wife and pets.

The time has come to reintroduce our specialists. ✨

Kicking off this series, we have Dr. Haley Jost, who has just returned from maternity leave!

Dr. Jost is one of our board-certified ophthalmologists. Originally from Indianapolis, she attended Purdue University for both her undergraduate and veterinary degrees. During this time, she had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Budelsky as a veterinary student, which helped foster her love of ophthalmology. After graduation, she completed a rotating internship at the University of Georgia, followed by a specialty internship at BluePearl in Clearwater and Sarasota, Florida. Dr. Jost completed her comparative ophthalmology residency at Colorado State University, where she became an avid hiker with her husband. She loves all animals, and has extensive experience with both large and small animal species, along with exotics. Dr. Jost has a particular interest in corneal diseases, corneal surgery, and exotic ophthalmology, which is a niche service she offers at AVCC! In her spare time, she enjoys reading, coffee shops, and spending time outdoors with her husband, daughter, dog, and two cats.

Technicians Leslie and Ashley took a trip to the Goodwill outlet to see if they could find bedding for hospitalized patients. Not only did they score big with comfy items, they also helped minimize what goes into the landfill!

Mandy and Raygan are guiding Taylor and Karleigh with enhancing their jugular catheter placement skills. This is an important technique that allows for reliable vascular access, efficient blood sampling, rapid fluid administration, and advanced patient monitoring when every second counts.

Whittney is on our neurology team and recently passed her exam to become a Certified Veterinary Assistant! She has put a lot of time and effort studying for this comprehensive exam, and her efforts have paid off in a big way!

By gaining this credential, she has not only grown her career, but also has created a major, positive impact on our neurology department and hospital as a whole.
