🌟 June Employee Spotlight: Christina aka “Christy” 🌟

This month we’re excited to shine the spotlight on Christy, one of our amazing Veterinary Assistants here at Highland Animal Hospital! 🐾

Christy has been in the veterinary field for an impressive 13 years and has been a dedicated part of our team for the past 4 ½ years. Her experience and passion truly show in everything she does.

You’ll most often find Christy in our lab, her favorite place to be! She says working in the lab feels like a science project, and she genuinely enjoys running bloodwork, urinalysis and fecals. Her enthusiasm for the “behind-the-scenes” work helps us provide accurate and timely care for our patients every day.

When she’s not at work, Christy stays busy at home with her crew, 3 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 energetic toddlers who definitely keep life interesting! 😄

🎌 Fun Fact: Christy is a big fan of anime!

Thank you, Christy, for your hard work, positivity, and the care you bring to our patients and team. We’re lucky to have you! 💙

We are proud to announce that Christian Barkman is following in the footsteps of his late grandfather, Dr. David Barkman, his father, Dr. Josh Barkman, and his Uncle Dr. Japheth Barkman.

Christian recently graduated from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine and is now the newest veterinarian joining the Highland team!

Please help us welcome Dr. Christian Barkman to Highland Animal Hospital. We are excited for this new chapter and proud to have another generation of the Barkman family dedicated to caring for our community and their beloved pets. 🐾❤️

Congratulations, Dr. Christian Barkman, and welcome to the Highland family!

🚨We are currently seeing an increase in canine parvovirus (parvo) cases, especially in unvaccinated puppies or those who have not completed their full vaccine series.

Parvo is a highly contagious and potentially fatal virus that spreads easily and can live in the environment including soil for years.

To help protect your puppy:
🐾 Ensure they receive their full series of vaccinations
🐾 Avoid taking them to pet stores, dog parks, or public areas until fully vaccinated
🐾 Limit exposure to unfamiliar dogs and high-traffic areas

Parvo is spread through a dog's p**p; your puppy is at risk even if another dog is not present. Even walks around your neighborhood can pose a risk if your puppy is not fully protected.

If you have questions about your puppy’s vaccination schedule or notice symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or loss of appetite, please contact your veterinarian right away.

Let’s work together to keep our pets safe and healthy 💙

🌟 May Employee Spotlight: Jen K. our Practice Manager 🌟

We’re excited to shine the spotlight on Jen K., our incredible Practice Manager here at Highland Animal Hospital!

Jen has been dedicated to the veterinary field for over 30 years, bringing a wealth of knowledge, compassion, and leadership to our team. She has been a valued part of Highland Animal Hospital for the past 7 years, helping our clinic run smoothly while ensuring both clients and their fur babies feel welcomed and cared for.

Jen truly enjoys building connections and lasting friendships with our clients and their pets. She takes pride in helping families feel at ease with the services their pets need, making every visit as comfortable as possible.

While Jen doesn’t currently have pets of her own, she has a big heart for wildlife! She actively rehabs squirrels and opossums and is working toward obtaining her wildlife rehabilitation license.

🐾 Fun Facts About Jen: • She has an identical twin sister Jamie who is also a Practice Manager in the veterinary field...located in Ohio! • She shares the same May 12th birthday as Dr. Japheth too… clearly a day reserved for greatness (and strong personalities 😂🙃)!

Thank you, Jen, for your dedication, compassion, and everything you do for our team and our clients every day! 💙

Luna had been vomiting for several days and wasn’t acting like herself. An ER visit in Greensboro NC revealed something concerning—foreign objects in her stomach.

Her family made the trip to see us, and during surgery we found the cause:
👉 8 hair ties + a large amount of hair

The good news?
💚 Just 18 hours later, Luna was bright, alert, and ready to go home.

Cats LOVE hair ties—but swallowing them can quickly turn into a surgical emergency.

We removed 45 teeth from just 3 of our 7 dental patients today.

Not because owners didn’t care.
Because dental disease is silent - until it isn’t.

Most dogs adapt to pain. They keep eating. They keep acting normal.

Meanwhile, infection spreads under the gums.

Early dental care = fewer extractions, less cost, less pain.

Look in your dog’s and cat’s mouth today. Lift the lip and look for:
• Red gums
• Brown/yellow buildup
• Broken or loose teeth
• Bad odor

🌟 April Employee Spotlight: Katarina “Kat” 🌟
This month, we’re excited to shine the spotlight on one of our amazing team members, Katarina...better known as Kat!
Kat has been in the veterinary field for 5 years and has been a valued part of the Highland Animal Hospital family for the past 3 years. She has a true passion for helping our patients feel their best and takes pride in guiding them through their treatment plans with compassion and care. 🐾💙

When she’s not at the hospital, Kat stays busy with her own furry (and not-so-furry!) family. She has:
🐶 One dog named Gimli
🐱 One cat named Rascal
🦀🦀 Two hermit crabs named Seaweed and Cinnamon

And here’s a fun fact you won’t forget.Kat once fell through a beaver dam! Talk about an unforgettable adventure! 😄
We are so grateful to have Kat on our team and appreciate all the dedication she brings to our patients and clients every day.

👏 Be sure to show Kat some love in the comments!

From a broken elbow at 3 months old… to this 🐾❤️

When Nyla was just 3 months old, she took a fall off the bed and suffered a complex fracture of her radius involving the elbow.

Her family rushed her in, and after X-rays confirmed the injury, Dr. Josh got to work.

Using a screw and pin to stabilize the fracture, Dr. Josh was able to repair the bone and give Nyla the best chance at a full recovery.

Fast forward to today…
She’s 8 months old and bouncing around like nothing ever happened.

(Wait until you see her video 👇)

Moments like this are why we do what we do.
Helping pets not just heal—but get back to being themselves.

We know Nyla isn’t the only one.

Over the years, Dr. Josh has repaired hundreds of broken bones, and many of those patients are out there living their best lives today.

👉 If your pet ever had a fracture repaired by Dr. Josh, we’d LOVE to hear about them.
Drop a photo, tell us their story, or just let us know how they’re doing now.

There’s something really special about seeing all these success stories come together ❤️

It was a busy and productive Good Friday here at Highland! We celebrated Easter with delicious desserts, fun goodie bags, and wrapped up the day with an Easter egg hunt. 🐣🐰
Due to the busy schedule, we weren’t able to capture many photos, but here are a few highlights!
Thank you all for your patience and understanding while waiting, as we had just two veterinarians on staff. We truly appreciate you!
