As you enjoy the summer temps, please do right by the best friend who depends on you the most. Remember: a pet in a parked car, even with the windows open, can quickly overheat and die on a warm day.

If you see an animal in distress in someone’s car, call 911 immediately and try to find the owner. If you cannot find the owner immediately, and you are still waiting for first responders and the animal seems to be in grave condition, state law allows you to break the car window or make entry to save the pet’s life.

Finding the right touch can turn a high-energy feline into a puddle of contentment in just a few minutes.
1. Begin by lightly scratching the base of the ears to help your companion release natural endorphins.
2. Move to the cheeks, using small circular motions right behind the whiskers to engage their scent glands and lower their guard.
3. Stroke from the forehead up toward the top of the head to smooth out any lingering tension.
4. Keep your touch light and steady at the base of the skull, which provides a deep sense of relief.
5. Limit these interactions to about five or ten minutes so your cat remains relaxed rather than overstimulated.
A quiet, rhythmic approach is usually the secret to a happy and calm pet.

Signs your cat is in pain that most owners miss entirely

Cats are biologically programmed to hide pain — a vulnerable animal showing weakness invites predators. This means the signs of pain in cats are subtle and easily misread as personality changes. Squinting or partially closed eyes. Sitting hunched with weight shifted forward. Whiskers pulled back and flattened. Reluctance to jump or change positions. Decreased grooming or over-grooming a specific spot. Eating less but not refusing food entirely. Any combination of these lasting more than a day or two is worth a vet visit. What looks like grumpiness or laziness is often discomfort.
