❄️ Winter brings colder temps, heavier coats… and a higher risk of impaction colic. One big reason? Horses often drink less in cold weather.

🔎 Watching water intake and manure is simple but essential winter horsemanship. Small changes sneak up fast.

🩺 Rehab Reminder: Horses in limited turnout or on certain medications may need closer monitoring and a hydration plan.

➡️ Stay tuned for winter hydration tips in our next post!

📞 If you notice changes in drinking or manure, reach out to your Foxhall Equine veterinary team at 410-406-1600.

🔍 Before the Problem

The best time to address soundness issues is before they become limiting. Subtle asymmetries and early soreness are where proactive care makes the biggest difference.

🚨Maryland Horse Owners: New MDA Transport Requirements 🚨

The Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced new statewide rules for horse movement due to current EHV-1 concerns. Here’s what you need to know:

1️⃣ Maryland has suspended all EECVIs.
- An EECVI (Extended Equine Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) is the 6-month digital health certificate used for repeated, routine travel.
- Effective immediately, EECVIs will no longer be accepted for any movement into or within Maryland.

2️⃣ A standard CVI is required for all equine events within Maryland.
This applies to every event held in the state.

3️⃣ A standard CVI is required for all interstate movement into Maryland.
For horses coming from states with confirmed EHV-1, the CVI must be:
- Issued within 5 days of travel, and
- Include the required statement confirming no EHV-1 exposure or quarantine in the prior 21 days.

4️⃣ Every CVI must include MDA’s required statement that the horse has:
- Not originated from a quarantined premises,
- Not been exposed to a positive EHV-1 horse, and
- Not attended any event with a confirmed or suspected EHV-1 case within the last 21 days.

When to PowerPac Your Horse 🐴💙

Spring and fall are good times to revisit your horse’s deworming program. PowerPacs can be helpful for horses with higher parasite exposure or inconsistent f***l egg counts, targeting encysted small strongyles that routine dewormers may miss.

Because every horse and farm are different, we base deworming plans on f***l testing, management, and season.
