☀️🐾 HEAT WARNING FOR OUR PETS 🐾☀️

High temperatures and humidity in Harford County can quickly become dangerous for our furry family members. Even a few minutes outside or in a parked car can put pets at risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

💧 Keep fresh water available
🌳 Limit outdoor activity during peak heat
🐶 Watch for excessive panting, drooling, weakness, or vomiting
🚗 Never leave pets in cars, even for a minute. Cracking your windows isn’t enough.

Let’s work together to keep our safe, cool, and healthy all summer long. ❤️☀️

She graduated from Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine and has special interests in dentistry, neurology, surgery, and Fear Free practices for feline patients. Outside of work, she enjoys Disney trips, time at the gym, sweet treats, and walks with her dog Ezra. After more than 40 years in veterinary medicine, Dr. Scott Gounaris has officially retired from full-time practice. ❤️🐾

Since graduating from the University of Florida Veterinary School in 1982, Dr. Gounaris has dedicated his life to caring for animals and the people who love them. In 2002, he founded Pleasantville Animal Hospital of Fallston with a vision of providing compassionate, personalized veterinary care to our community. For over two decades, that vision has shaped the heart of our hospital.

From the very beginning, Dr. Gounaris built more than just a veterinary practice.. he built relationships. Many families trusted him through generations of pets, and his kindness, patience, and genuine compassion left a lasting impact on countless clients, patients, staff members, and community organizations over the years.

Looking back through old scrapbook pages and memories, it’s clear how much joy Dr. Gounaris found in educating children, supporting local families, and creating a welcoming place for both pets and people. Whether he was caring for a beloved family pet, teaching Cub Scouts about animal health, or simply sharing a comforting conversation with a client, his dedication to this community has always gone far beyond medicine.

While Dr. Gounaris is stepping away from full-time practice, his legacy continues through his family — Dr. Rebecca Gounaris, Dr. Michael Gounaris, and Dr. Megan Gounaris — who are honored to continue the compassionate care and values he established here at Pleasantville Animal Hospital.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Scott Gounaris on his well-earned retirement and thanking him for decades of exceptional service, compassion, and dedication to our patients, clients, and community. We are endlessly grateful for everything he has built and the lives he has touched along the way. 💚🐶🐱

We’re happy to support the work being done by The Humane Society of Harford County and the animals in our community who are waiting for loving homes. 🐾

We know how much time, care, and compassion goes into helping shelter pets every day, and we were grateful for the opportunity to donate these cat condos to help make their stay a little more comfortable while they await adoption. ❤️

🐾 Did you know allergies in dogs often show up through their skin?

Unlike people, who commonly experience sneezing or watery eyes, dogs with allergies typically become itchy. Allergies can cause inflammation of the skin and ears, making pets extremely uncomfortable.

Common signs of allergies in dogs include:
• Excessive scratching or licking
• Chewing at the paws
• Red or irritated skin
• Recurrent ear infections
• Hair loss or hot spots
• Scooting or skin odor

Allergies can be triggered by things in the environment such as pollen, grass, dust mites, mold, fleas, and even certain foods. Chronic inflammation from allergies can also lead to secondary skin or ear infections if not properly managed.

💊 While medications like Apoquel® and Cytopoint® remain very effective for many dogs, newer options such as Numelvi™ are now also available and may help some pets who may need an alternative. Numelvi can be an option for puppies greater than 6 months old, who may already be suffering from symptoms of allergies. Acting fast to provide itch relief within 2 to 4 hours following the first dose.

Every dog is different, and allergy treatment plans may include medications, flea prevention, medicated shampoos, diet trials, or ear/skin treatments depending on the cause and severity of symptoms.

If you think your dog may be struggling with allergies, our team is always happy to help evaluate their skin and discuss treatment options! 🐶💜
