You may have seen recent news reports regarding the New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax). We wanted to provide some information and reassurance regarding this parasite and how to help protect your pets.

The New World Screwworm is a type of fly whose larvae (maggots) can infest open wounds, surgical sites, or areas of damaged skin. Unlike typical maggots that feed on dead tissue, screwworm larvae feed on living tissue and can cause significant damage if left untreated.

While there are currently no widespread concerns for pets in our area, it is always important to remain vigilant and promptly address any wounds or skin problems your pet may develop.

The good news is that several of the parasite prevention products many of our patients already receive have been approved for the prevention and treatment of New World Screwworm infestations, including:

Keeping your pet on a current, veterinarian-recommended parasite prevention program is one of the best ways to help protect them.

🐾 Easter Safety Alert for Your Furry Family Members! 🐣

Easter is a wonderful time of year — but it comes with some hidden dangers for our beloved cats and dogs. As your trusted veterinary team, we want to make sure your entire family stays safe this holiday.

🌸 LILIES & CATS: This is a critical one. Many lilies — including Easter Lilies, Tiger Lilies, and Day Lilies — are highly toxic to cats. Even small exposures, such as chewing on a leaf or drinking water from a vase, can cause acute kidney failure. If you have cats at home, please keep all lilies out of your house entirely. No exceptions.

🍫 CHOCOLATE & XYLITOL: Easter baskets are full of treats that are dangerous for dogs and cats. Chocolate can cause vomiting, seizures, and in large amounts, can be life-threatening. Sugar-free candies and gum containing xylitol are equally dangerous.

🥚 EASTER GRASS: That colorful plastic basket filler is a serious ingestion hazard, especially for cats. If swallowed, it can cause a life-threatening intestinal obstruction.

🐣 BABY CHICKS & BUNNIES: While adorable, live animals given as Easter gifts are a long-term commitment — and can carry Salmonella.
