You may have seen recent news reports regarding the New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax). We wanted to provide some information and reassurance regarding this parasite and how to help protect your pets.

The New World Screwworm is a type of fly whose larvae (maggots) can infest open wounds, surgical sites, or areas of damaged skin. Unlike typical maggots that feed on dead tissue, screwworm larvae feed on living tissue and can cause significant damage if left untreated.

While there are currently no widespread concerns for pets in our area, it is always important to remain vigilant and promptly address any wounds or skin problems your pet may develop.

The good news is that several of the parasite prevention products many of our patients already receive have been approved for the prevention and treatment of New World Screwworm infestations, including:

Bravecto®

Keeping your pet on a current, veterinarian-recommended parasite prevention program is one of the best ways to help protect them.

We also recommend:

Checking your pet regularly for cuts, wounds, or skin irritation.

Seeking veterinary care promptly if you notice any wound that is not healing normally.

Watching for unusual swelling, discharge, foul odor, or signs of irritation around a wound.

Maintaining your pet's routine parasite prevention year-round.

His dream 50+ years ago has allowed us to continue to serve the beloved pets and livestock in this beautiful community of Eudora.
