Does your dog run a very early breakfast service? 🐕

Dogs learn fast. If a 5 AM stare gets food once, the stare becomes a habit.

The fix is simple. Reward calm behavior, and keep breakfast on a steady schedule. Your dog learns that waiting quietly is what works.

Does your dog go from zero to full alarm the second the doorbell rings? You're not alone, and it's something we can work on together.

Today Rio worked on exactly that. We practiced the front door with someone ringing the bell and knocking, which is one of the hardest moments for him. He gave it his best effort.

The part we love most came next: settling. After a reactive session, we helped Rio bring his body back down with calm, quiet rewards for every relaxed breath and every soft moment, until he could lie down and rest.

Why does this matter? A dog who stays over-excited can't learn much, and he may carry that tension for the rest of the day. When Rio can settle, he can think clearly again and keep building skills later on.

Rio is making real progress, and we're proud of the effort he puts in. Great job today, buddy!

Could your dog find his way under your legs on cue, even with his sister and a game going on? 👀🐾

Banjo can. This week I was in for an hour drop-in visit. I gave Banjo and his sister Roxy exercise on a walk and in the backyard. While I was there, I also trimmed Banjo's nails.

Then we did a little training. Banjo's "Tuck" means he comes in and goes underneath your legs wherever you are, and then settles there. We practiced with two distractions. First, Roxy was right there. In the second round, Roxy was there and play was happening all around him. He was excited, and he still got it done.

Why does this matter? A dog who can stay focused when things get busy is a dog who is easier to live with. Practicing in real life, with real distractions, is how that focus builds.

Banjo, you did great, buddy. Keep it up! 💪🐶

Does your dog stop when you ask, even when something exciting is coming toward them? 👀🐾

A reliable "Stop" can be a real safety tool. It can pause your dog before a moment that matters, like traffic near the curb, an open gate, an unfamiliar dog on the path, or a hazard on a walk you did not see coming.

In this video, Vinny is trotting toward the handler when she gives a "Stop" with an open hand. Vinny sits right there and looks to her. Then Vinny gets praise and is called in with "Come."

Why does it matter? A stop cue only works in a real emergency if your dog already knows it well. That means practicing in calm places first, rewarding good stops every time, and adding distractions only when your dog is ready. 💗

Does your dog dodge the towel when the rain comes in? 👀🐾

Wet, muddy paws are part of life in North County this time of year. A lot of dogs pull away when we touch their feet, and that's normal.

Here's a simple way to change it. Stand at the door with a towel and a few treats. Lightly touch one paw, say "Yes!", and reward. Then lift it, wipe it, and reward again. Go one paw at a time. Keep it short and calm.

Why it works: your dog learns that paw handling predicts something good. Soon the towel feels like part of the routine, and you can wipe off the mud without a wrestling match. 💗

Do your evening walks start getting dark earlier now? 🐾

Dusk is when coyotes and other wildlife are most active around San Diego neighborhoods. A simple habit helps: teach your dog a "Let's Go" U-turn.

Say "Let's Go" in a happy voice, turn the other way, and reward with a treat when your dog follows. Practice it on easy walks first.

Why it matters: a dog who turns with you on cue is easy to guide away from anything surprising, without a tug-of-war. 💗

Keep your dog on a short leash at dusk, and stick to well-lit streets.

"But he knows Sit at home!" 🐕

Dogs don't automatically carry a skill from one place to another. A cue learned in the living room has to be practiced in new places before it holds up at the park.

We build it step by step: quiet room, backyard, front yard, then busier spots. Your dog learns that "Sit" means the same thing everywhere.

Would your dog step up onto something new if you asked him to? 🐾

Barkley is working on getting up on things when he is asked. When he was younger, he was fearful of a lot of everyday objects. Plenty of dogs feel that way, and it is not stubbornness. New things can look big, wobbly, or strange to a dog.

So Anna has been helping him get comfortable with random objects, one at a time, at his own pace. Patience and rewards make the difference, and every small step counts.

This matters for Barkley beyond the fun of it. He is also a potential therapy dog, so comfort with all kinds of new items is a real part of his training. A dog who can settle onto a new surface with confidence handles the world more calmly.

Barkley is still learning, and there is always room for progress. Keep going, buddy. You are doing great. 💗
