Three generations on a hike. Saxon is trying to decide if he should grow taller, or focus his energy on the flowing locks/mane. We think he's been doing a great job on both!

It's been a while since I dusted off the ol' Sony for updating pictures of my own dogs. We were hoping for some more colors, but we will take beautiful weather!

L to R: Saxon 6.5m (Revel/Appa), Revel 3y (Penni/Cobalt), Cobalt 9y (Mariah/Rifkin)

Someone is judging you right now.

Someone else is completely inspired by you.

But here’s the thing… neither one of them is paying your entry fees, buying your dog food, putting in your training hours, or walking in your shoes.

So do YOU.

Live your best life. Chase your goals. Train your dogs. Enter the trials. Make mistakes. Celebrate your wins. Enjoy every moment of the journey.

There will always be people with opinions. Some will cheer you on, and others will criticize every move you make.

Don’t let either one determine your worth or your direction.

At the end of the day, it’s your journey, your dog, your dreams, and your hard work.

Don’t let the outside noise steal the joy from something you love.

Keep showing up. Keep growing. Keep doing YOU.

Because the only approval you truly need is your own.

And The Argument Goes On:

Who Is More Important — The Sire or The Dam?

"The sire is everything. Breed to the best dog and you'll improve your line."

"No — the dam is everything. She's the foundation of your kennel."

Both sides are convinced they are right. Both can point to famous dogs to prove it. And both are missing half the picture.

Let's break it down.

The Case for The Sire
Historically, the sire has gotten the glory. There are reasons for that, some practical and some cultural.

He can influence more puppies. A great dam might have 2-3 litters in her lifetime. A popular sire can have 50+ litters. Because his influence is so wide, a sire — for better or worse — can change the direction of an entire breed in one generation. Think of all the phrases like "a sire line" or "doubling up on that famous stud dog." Breeds remember great sires.

He is easier to evaluate. A sire is often shown extensively, health tested publicly, and his offspring from many different dams can be compared. That gives you a lot of data. You can say, "He consistently throws better fronts, no matter what bitch he's bred to."

The flaw? It treats the dam as a neutral incubator.

The Case for The Dam:
Ask most long-time, successful kennel breeders privately — the ones who have had the same line for 20 or 30 years — and they'll almost always tell you: Your kennel is your bi***es.

Here's why genetics actually favors her:

She contributes 50% of the nuclear DNA, just like the sire. On autosomal chromosomes, it's a dead heat.

She contributes 100% of the mitochondrial DNA. Mitochondria are the energy factories of the cells, and they come only from the mother. Mitochondrial DNA influences metabolism, stamina, growth, and fertility. You never get that from the sire.

She contributes the uterine environment. For 63 days, her health, nutrition, stress level, hormones, and even her age affect how genes are expressed. This is epigenetics — same genes, different volume settings based on the mother's environment.

She contributes the first 8 weeks of life. A puppy learns how to be a dog from its dam. Is she confident or fearful? Clean or messy? Does she startle at noises or investigate? Does she discipline puppies appropriately? Studies on early canine behavior show that dam temperament and maternal care in weeks 1-8 have a measurable impact on puppy temperament, stress resilience, and sociability. The sire isn't there for any of it.

She is the bottleneck for quality. A mediocre sire bred to a great dam can still produce some very nice puppies. A great sire bred to a mediocre dam rarely does. That's why old breeders say: "Breed your best bitch to the best dog you can find. Never breed a mediocre bitch just because the stud is famous."

If we look strictly at DNA contribution, neither is "more important."

Each parent gives 50% of the genes that determine structure, coat, color, angulation, and most health traits.
For sex-linked traits, there is a small difference: A sire gives his X chromosome to all his daughters and his Y to all his sons. A dam gives an X to both. So for X-linked traits, the dam can influence sons in a way the sire cannot.
For maternal effects — litter size, whelping ease, milk production, maternal instinct — those are entirely on the dam.

Where the sire does become more important is in population genetics. One popular sire overused can spread a recessive health problem like wildfire. One outstanding dam, no matter how great, cannot damage — or save — a breed on her own. The breed's health is shaped more by which sires we collectively choose to use heavily.

So Who Wins?
The most honest answer experienced breeders settle on is this:

The sire may be more important to the breed, but the dam is more important to your kennel.

If you are a stud dog owner, you are selling possibility. If you are a brood bitch owner, you are living with reality — the 2 a.m. whelping, the mastitis, the puppy who won't thrive, the 8 weeks of raising and evaluating.

Choose your dam line as if you will live with it for the rest of your life — because you will. Choose your sire as if you are borrowing the best trait you don't have.

Look for a sire who complements her strengths and doesn't double her faults. And never underestimate a bitch with a great pedigree behind her, a sound body, solid health clearances, and a wonderful temperament — even if she wasn't the flashiest show dog. She will stamp her puppies in ways no pedigree chart can show.

In the end, the argument goes on because we want breeding to be simple — one great dog to hang all our hopes on. It never is. It takes a great sire and a great dam, and even then, Mother Nature gets the final vote.

Why teach all kinds of positions to your dog, outside of rally and obedience?

It's a great core workout, practices body awareness, and is a great way to stay in shape!

While Revel is still able to do normal activities, this is a great way to keep her in shape throughout our hopeful pregnancy!

Whelping has been proven to be much easier on fit females across species!

One of the hardest parts of breeding is the lifestyle changes. Not trialing, or showing, not coming to work with me for a lot of it. Dog breeding is all just calculated risks and what risks are appropriate for your program at that time. We certainly miss all the traveling and seeing all our Shiloh fam 💜.

Happiest SIX MONTH birthday to this happy go lucky guy!

It has been so much fun to see him grow, change, and continue to blossom over these past few months. He weighed in at 78.2 pounds today and is officially taller than his mom.

I am so grateful he has such a wonderful life with my sister and I am still able to see him all the time 💜💜.

Saxon (Revel/Appa)

Idk who told him it was okay to grow up 😭. Cobalt still likes to keep his ears a secret in group photos 😂.

Dog breeding is leaving your house at 3am for your dogs date 💜.

A little over a thousand miles for this all to come together, talk about a girls weekend 💅🏼. Revel and Willie have officially been paired and we are hoping for December pups!

So thankful for SpiritWind Shilohs for letting us use this stud muffin and helping coordinate everything, Lori Nuzzo for loving Willie and making it happen, Ridgewood Shiloh Shepherds for doing the breeding. Of course Stardust Shiloh Shepherds and Ekho Haus for our beautiful girl, Revel. It really does take a village!

Revel/Willie.. expected some Rillie cute puppies in December 😏🤞🏼.
