A tale of two Opies. Actually, there’s only one Opie here with a tail. The red-headed Opie is Ron Howard who played Andy Griffith’s son on the (coincidentally named) Andy Griffith Show. Opie with the tail is a resident of the Erie Humane Society. Why you should adopt Opie the dog (OTD) rather than red-headed Opie (RHO):

OTD is very affectionate, loves giving kisses, and appreciates a good butt scratch. RHO is affectionate too but would likely press charges if you tried scratching his butt.

OTD will happily eat the same thing every day. RHO likes variety in his meals, thus making him more expensive to feed.

Both Opies need grooming but you’ll spend a lot less clothing OTD.

OTD gets along with other dogs and children, but has not been tested with cats. RHO is allergic to cats, children, and long-haired dogs.

OTD walks well on the leash. RHO walks well off leash.

It appears there is no contest- Opie the Dog is the paws down winner. Come meet Opie at the Erie Humane Society.

Come meet Opie at Clear the Shelters this Saturday from 12noon-5p. Opie the Dog will be giving pawtographs!

Cat People Needed!

Want to make a real difference for homeless cats in our community?

The Erie Humane Society is looking for reliable morning volunteers to help clean the cattery. This important work keeps our feline residents healthy, comfortable, and ready to find their forever homes.

Every clean cage, fresh blanket, and kind interaction helps these cats feel safe and loved while they wait for their families.

If you have a few hours to spare and a heart for cats, we'd love to have you join our volunteer team!

Contact the Erie Humane Society to learn more about volunteering, indicate you are interested in cattery cleaning and see how you can help make a difference at

Our Clear the Shelters Adoption Event is happening Saturday, August 29, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and we're highlighting some of our resident pets who are still waiting for their furever homes.

Today, we'd like you to meet MYRTLE!

Myrtle is a sweet 10-year-old domestic shorthair looking for a loving family to call her own.

Myrtle came to us after the heartbreaking loss of her owner. Despite all the changes in her life, she remains the gentle, quiet, and loving cat she's always been. This beautiful senior girl is spayed, declawed, and happiest when she's relaxing in a calm environment and enjoying the company of people who love her.

Could you be the one to give Myrtle her furever home?

Clear the Shelter is Saturday, August 29 Noon to 5:00 PM
Adult Cats & Dogs: FREE Adoption. Kittens & Puppies under 6 months: 50% Off Adoption Fee

All adoptions require an approved adoption application.

Please share to help Myrtle find her forever home.
