About Devotion to Dogs:
Ben Davidson was training dogs in the San Diego area for 15 years prior to starting Devotion to Dogs. He founded Devotion to Dogs in January 2015, shortly after he attended Northridege Animal Behavior College. A Devotion to Dogs certified trainer will assess your dog(s) in a structured environment within our facility. Our facility is equipped with in-home replication, prop

er exercise requirements, availability to all breeds of dogs, as well as multiple personnel for testing all possible behaviors your dog could have. We will communicate with you about the energy and foundation from what we see during the appointment. We will immediately begin to offer you solutions to the unwanted behaviors we are observing. Before you leave, we will recommend possible tools to use with your dog, depending on the solutions we come up with. About Ben Davidson: Growing up, my family had five dogs. As far back as I can remember, I was playing with the dogs and watching how they interacted with each other and people. I began watching dog shows and learning about different breeds. During this time I grew to love the relationship between a boy and his dog. I learned it was truly a relationship of love, respect, and trust. This was the purest relationship I had experienced. I learned that dogs are more than just dogs. They are companions that can give you a rewarding, fulfilling life. They are there when you are sad, they are there when you are happy, they know when to give you space, and know exactly when not to when properly trained. I have learned that they have a very different way of communicating. Over the years, and all the time I have spent with dogs, I learned to read and understand them, which gives me the ability to communicate what is being said or not being said in every situation. My job is to observe what is happening with your dog and translate exactly what they are trying to tell you with their behavior in any given situation. Just imagine how peaceful your life could be with a pet that understands your direction and commands. My goal is to make sure quality of life for you and your family, dogs included, is the best it can be and to keep dogs from going to the shelters simply because of language barriers. I started training so I could educate and rehabilitate owners and their dog(s) making life better one lesson at a time. While I can help you meet any training goals you may have, the type of training I specialize in is behavioral. Most owners donโ€™t realize their dog may require behavioral training. Behavior training can be anything from basic commands such as sit, stay, come to aggression towards other dogs or people. I set the foundation that helps correct ANY behavior problem.

Training a puppy at a young age is crucial for several reasons. Puppies are at their most impressionable stage during their early weeks and months, which makes this an ideal time to teach them good habits and build a strong foundation for their behavior. Hereโ€™s why starting early is important:

1. Learning is Easier for Young Puppies
Critical Development Period: Puppies go through a critical socialization period between 3โ€“16 weeks of age. During this time, they are highly receptive to new experiences, making it easier for them to adapt and learn.

Prevention of Bad Habits: Teaching good behaviors early prevents bad habits from forming, which can be harder to break later.

2. Builds Confidence and Social Skills
Socialization: Exposing a puppy to different people, environments, and other animals reduces fear and builds confidence.

Adaptability: Proper training during this stage ensures they can handle various situations calmly.

3. Sets the Foundation for Obedience
Basic Commands: Teaching commands like "sit," "stay," and "come" early helps establish control and ensures safety for the dog and others.

Behavioral Expectations: Puppies trained early understand boundaries, making them more manageable as they grow.

4. Prevents Future Behavioral Issues
Fear and Aggression: Early training can prevent fear-based aggression or anxiety, which often stems from poor socialization.

Destructive Behaviors: Proper guidance reduces the likelihood of chewing, barking, or digging problems.

We have many options for puppy training!

In this video, this is just one single session for a puppy during the stay & train program! We also offer puppy classes which is with 5-6 other puppies!
Or we even offer one on one courses for you and your pup!

๐Ÿพ Meet Samson: From Reactivity to Real Progress ๐Ÿพ
This is Samson, a 200-pound Great Dane with a big heart โ€” and a bit of reactivity, especially toward women. While heโ€™s naturally sweet, Samson just needed the right guidance, exposure, and structure to help him feel safe and behave appropriately.

Thatโ€™s exactly what he got during his 10-day training program with us!

๐Ÿ’ก How Did We Help Samson?
We focused on:
โœ… Standard obedience training โ€” building a strong foundation
โœ… Bonding and trust-building โ€” so heโ€™d listen and feel safe
โœ… Proper daily exercise โ€” to release tension and build calm
โœ… Controlled exposure to strangers โ€” to show him that new people are okay

In the video, youโ€™ll see a touching moment:
A young girl โ€” nervous but curious โ€” wanted to meet Samson. With gentle guidance, both overcame their fears, and Samson, who once growled at strangers, allowed a new friend to pet him in a busy mall. A huge win for both!

๐Ÿถ Struggling with a reactive dog?
Youโ€™re not alone โ€” and you can help your dog!
With structure, clarity, and compassion, transformation is absolutely possible.

What is the difference between resource guarding and barrier guarding?

Resource guarding occurs when a dog defends valuable objects, food, toys, or spaces from other people, animals, or even their owners. The dog feels the need to protect these resources and may exhibit behaviors such as growling, snapping, or even biting if someone gets too close.

Barrier guarding occurs when a dog becomes protective or defensive when blocked from something or when physically confined. This often happens when a dog is in a crate, behind a fence, or separated from something they want or need. The dog may display territorial behavior or frustration from being unable to reach or access a space or object.

In this video you will see Oscar, a little Frenchie who showed great barrier guarding while in a kennel.

Oscar went through our program and actually ended up biting one of our trainers due to the extreme barrier guarding.

After laying down proper structure, obedinece and exercise, Oscar was able to not just be okay in a kennel, but he was also able to be pet while inside of his kennel!

๐Ÿพ Understanding Guarding Behavior in Dogs ๐Ÿšซ

Ever wonder why some dogs become defensive over their toys or when behind a fence? Meet Oscar, a charming Frenchie who exhibited intense barrier guarding in his kennel โ€“ a behavior marked by protectiveness when blocked or confined. This is different from resource guarding, where dogs protect objects, food, or spaces perceived as valuable.

Despite Oscar's initial challenges, which included biting one of our trainers due to his extreme guarding behavior, we've made remarkable progress! Through implementing structured training, consistent obedience exercises, and ensuring proper exercise routines, Oscar has transformed.

Our latest video showcases Oscar's journey from an anxious pup to one who is not only comfortable in his kennel but also welcomes affection while inside it. Watch and learn how patience and the right approach can change the narrative for a dog struggling with guarding behaviors.

Join us in celebrating Oscar's success story and discover effective techniques to manage and understand guarding tendencies.

๐Ÿพ Meet Ace ๐Ÿพ

Ace arrived at our doorstep grappling with food aggression, a common challenge for many canine companions. Our mission? To transform his response to mealtime into one of calm and acceptance.

How did we achieve this milestone in Ace's journey? The foundation began with substantial exercise and fine-tuning his obedience skills - essential elements of any behavioral rehab. However, true rehabilitation extends beyond teaching avoidance techniques; it requires reshaping the dog's understanding and reactions.

At our facility, we didn't just train Ace to tolerate others' presence during meals; we went further. We patiently worked with him until he learned that being petted or having someone nearby as he eats is perfectly safe and normal. No panic, no fear.

Ace's progress epitomizes what genuine rehab embodies: not just a temporary fix but a lasting change in behavior. Now, mealtime is a peaceful affair for Ace, and that's the ultimate reward for us all.
