Great story………kid was found because the right asset was available to be used. That is real data, 98% closure rate on missing persons. ND State Patrol have been called all over to neighboring states because they have bloodhounds used to help locate people. These are not man eaters, high speed Instagram short clips, or anything else. Real results using the right dog. Good work getting it done and awesome to see partnerships being used to get things moving.

“Game changer,” “force multiplier,” “invaluable asset,” terms used to describe what working K9s bring. None however fully quantify the real benefit.

From CBP: “ CBP K9 teams are considered a "game changer" because they allow a single handler and dog to search faster, detect threats more accurately, and cover far more ground than manpower alone.”

The so what…….the dog literally pays for itself through seizures, finding people both good and bad, and significantly reducing the use of man hours……..!!!!!!

Ask yourself why your community (no matter how small or how big) is not employing K9s?

Push this to school boards, school administrators, teachers, parents, city council members, county commissioners, state representatives, local police, sheriff’s offices, and anyone invested in the success of our younger generation.

The data shows that there is very little argument that something is more detrimental to the success of our younger generation than drugs. Schools can have the best academics, the extra curricular sports, arts, music programs, and even school resource officers. You can dedicate time to discuss the problem and what it does. There is little effect without ACTION. You have to attack the root cause. As shown, once drugs are introduced to one individual they become a poison going from peer to peer and all of the other elements of the school environment crumble around them.

Look at the action taken by one county in North Carolina…….they understand the biggest asset anyone can have in the war against drugs in a school is a K9. They have been able to place one in every one of their high schools in the county. This community has invested in the future success of the kids within their county by recognizing the greatest asset and making it widely available.

The goal…….to deter, disrupt, and detect the transport, distribution, sale, and use of drugs by school aged kids.

I’m sure you’re asking if this is a unique situation. Did they figure out a way to do something no one else can? No, this is a completely repeatable model for even the smallest and most rural community. In today’s environment there are many ways to approach the solution without over taxing your local law enforcement. There are ways for your local school, government, community to take these types of action. The typical excuses of budget constraints, time, and effort should be seriously evaluated before uttered when discussing the youth of your community. This is a priority above all others. We need to protect the future of this country and it starts by giving kids the best chance of success in the future.

If you are interested in having a discussion about what is in the realm of possibility or want to talk more in depth on this subject, please reach out to our company. Please understand, this topic and this series was not about financial gain. This is because this truly matters and action must be taken to fight back against drugs in our communities.

What is the “SO WHAT” of all this data when it comes to kids and drugs…….

It has become progressively easier for many school aged children to access illicit substances, which has contributed immensely to the numbers mentioned.

Beyond the home environment, peer introduction remains the most likely and greatest risk of exposure to illicit narcotics.

Ease of access combined with a lack of effective ability to regulate drugs in school contributes significantly to these rising numbers. Many students have learned how to effectively hide narcotics, which enables them to continue using them while also creating the opportunity to introduce them to others.

According to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, overdose deaths among 15 to 24 year olds continues to rise. Although this is perhaps the most severe concern associated with narcotics use in young people, teenagers who use drugs face a variety of other concerns as well. Drug use greatly increases the risk that a high school student will drop out of school prior to graduation. Drug users statistically have lower grades, higher absence rates, demonstrate an increased risk of su***de and depression, as well as engaging in future criminal activity, becoming involved in physical violence and engaging in a number of other risky behaviors.

High-risk substance use is another serious concern in schools, as it increases an individual’s risk of infection or blood-borne disease.

Based on the data there is no argument that drug use by a school age kid has a direct and severe negative effect on their ability to succeed in society later on in life!

Narcotics detection dogs play a vital role in keeping illegal substances out of schools. Learn about the benefits of these incredible K9s.

More focused data:

Nearly 1 in 7 teenagers have abused an illicit drug in the last month.

As high as 1 in 3 high school seniors have used illicit drugs in the last year.

In South Dakota specifically, those age 12-17 years old who have used illicit drugs in the last 30 days reported nearly 100% was ma*****na use.

This means that even in small rural communities with small class sizes, there is most likely 1 student, if not more, that are currently using an illicit substance or have tried it. I would argue that with smaller size schools there is a greater chance school age children will be exposed to drug use because there is less statistical probably they will be shelter from the drug use by the small amount of their peers.

Continuing the data from yesterday, but taking a closer look at the statistics involving school aged kids. Again, this is the 2023 data from the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics.

36.8% of young people use an illegal drug by the time they reach the 12th grade.

Among Americans age 12 and older, 47.7 million were considered current illegal drug users (used drugs within the last 30 days).

Breaking down some of the percentages of those who used illegal drugs in the last 30 days. 5.4% were 8th graders, 10.0% were 10th graders, and 16.5% were 12 graders

MASSIVE TAKE AWAY:
“Users who try an illegal drug before age 15 are 6.5X more likely to develop a substance use disorder than those who wait until age 21 or later.”

The following statistics are from the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics from 2023 (data has not fully been compiled beyond 2023).

47.7 million people 12 and over were current illicit drug users.

Drug use is highest between the age of 18-25 at 39%.

As today marks the 81st anniversary of D-Day, it is important to remember the incredible sacrifices made, the overwhelming adversity that was overcome, and the people who made it possible for us to live in the world we do today. This is a cool fact about MWDs during WWII. There are lots of interesting pieces of history surrounding the use of dogs in earlier conflicts, so if you’re interested, take some time to read up on them in WWII.
