Thanksgiving is all fun and games until someone sneaks a drumstick under the table.

As we head into the holiday, here’s a quick reminder that some of our favorite dishes can be dangerous for dogs and cats. Foods like onions, garlic, cooked bones, chocolate, alcohol, fatty trimmings, artificial sweeteners, and rich desserts can lead to some very scary emergencies fast.

If your pet gets into something they shouldn’t, please contact a veterinary urgent care or emergency clinic right away. The list below includes trusted local options to help if your pet needs immediate care.

A safe holiday starts with a safe plate. Keep the treats to the pet friendly ones and the leftovers out of paw’s reach.

Also, if you are planning on having a full house tomorrow make sure your furry family members are accounted for and do not slip out as MeeMaw is walking in.

​🚫 Pet Food Safety Checklist for the Holiday:
​Bones are a BIG no-no! 🦴❌ Cooked bones can splinter and cause serious internal harm. Keep them out of reach!

​Say NO to Fatty Foods! 🧈🍗 Rich, greasy scraps (like turkey skin or gravy) can lead to painful pancreatitis. Keep their portions lean and plain.
​The Toxic Trio: 🧅🍄🍇 Onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins are poisonous to pets. Double check your trash cans! 🗑️🔒

​Dough is Dangerous! 🍞 Uncooked bread dough can expand in their stomach and cause major problems.

​Sweeteners Secret: 🍬 Some sugar-free treats contain Xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs. 🚨

​👉 Vet Emergency Number: Keep your veterinarian's number or the nearest emergency animal hospital handy! 📞🩺 There is one in Elizabeth City now!!
