🐾 Meet The Remaining Five Bay Shore Pups 🐾

Out of the original 17 Bay Shore dogs that came to PUP, these five are still with us, & almost ready for homes.

People often ask what happens after the initial rescue.

It's simple...

Dogs who once arrived scared, uncertain, & carrying the weight of their past eventually become comfortable enough to let their personalities shine.

(Sometimes those personalities are absolutely ridiculous)

👑 Sophia is Cleopatra.

She expects to be admired, adored, and consulted before any major decisions are made. She is quite certain the rest of us work for her.

🤔 George attends every meeting despite never understanding what the meeting is about.

Somehow, he's still an active participant.

🎀 Louie is a fashion-forward chaos goblin who somehow gets away with everything.

We don't know how. He just does.

🍩 Jimmy is, without question, a bag of donuts.

No thoughts.

No plans.

Just vibes.

We don't know how else to explain Jimmy.

🌪️ Paulie wakes up every morning and chooses chaos.

Not bad chaos.

Just the kind of chaos that leaves everyone asking,

"Paulie... why?"

Together, they're the remaining five from our original Bay Shore crew.

When these dogs first arrived, they carried trauma, uncertainty, and experiences no dog should have to endure.

Now they're safe enough to be themselves.

Sophia became Cleopatra.

George became George.

Louie became a fashion-forward chaos goblin.

Jimmy became a bag of donuts.

And Paulie became chaos.

Honestly, that's exactly what rescue is supposed to look like. ❤️🐾

Right now, however, the future of PUP itself is uncertain.

We're fighting to keep our rehabilitation center open while dealing with ongoing issues with our landlord & the building. The shelter that gave these dogs a second chance now needs help of its own.

Sophia and George being their weird selves....

Sophia: "Please act normal."
George: "No."
Sophia: "Just once."
George: "Absolutely not."

It's hard to believe these two are the same dogs who once had to learn what freedom, toys, couches, and normal life even meant.
Now their biggest concern is being weird together.
Honestly, we think that's a pretty good outcome. ❤️

"Walking" Jackie-Boy is a life experience. 🤣🤣🤣

He is our weirdest cat for sure... though we're no longer convinced he actually identifies as a cat, and honestly, we're fine with that.

We have officially accepted that Jackie-Boy is a dog.

Not a cat who acts like a dog.

An actual dog trapped in a cat's body.

Today's evidence: we took him for a walk, and instead of doing cat things, he immediately found a dog bed, flopped over, and rolled around on it like he'd just discovered paradise.

The case against him continues to grow:

✔️ Enjoys going for walks

✔️ Prefers hanging out with dogs

✔️ Steals dog beds

✔️ Has no interest in normal cat activities

✔️ Is allergic to cats

Honestly, at this point we're waiting for him to start barking.

While Jackie-Boy is busy living his best dog life, we're working hard to keep caring for all of the wonderfully weird animals who call PUP home and to keep our doors open.

🐾 Meet Sirius. 🐾

Sirius was born in 2013.

He's been with us since 2023.

And if Sirius could read this post, his first question would be:

"Is there food involved?"

Sirius is not a snuggly cat.

He's not the type to climb into your lap, follow you around the house, or spend his day looking for affection.

In fact, Sirius prefers that all petting requests be submitted in writing and approved by management first.

He enjoys attention on his terms.

He enjoys food on all terms.

And recently, Sirius was deeply offended to learn that several members of our staff believe he should be on a diet.

Sirius would like it officially noted that this is discrimination against fluffy cats everywhere.

The truth is, senior cats like Sirius are a big part of why we do what we do.

Not every cat is outgoing.
Not every cat is cuddly.
Not every cat is easy to adopt.

Some just need a safe place, a full food bowl, and people who love them exactly as they are.

For more than a year, we've continued caring for animals like Sirius while dealing with repeated building issues that have strained our resources and made planning for the future increasingly difficult.

Today, we're fighting to make sure cats like Sirius continue to have a safe place to call home.

🐾 Meet Bob. 🐾

Bob is 18 years old.

He is also the last cat still with us from a hoarding case involving nearly 50 cats that we helped with back in 2015.

For over a decade, Bob has watched cats come and go.

He's watched kittens get adopted.
He's watched seniors find homes.
He's watched volunteers come and go.

Bob's response to all of this has generally been:

"That's nice. Is there food?"

Bob isn't feral.

He doesn't hate people.

He's just never been particularly impressed by any of us.

Food? Excellent.

A comfortable chair? Acceptable.

Human affection? He'll let you know if and when it's required.

At 18 years old, Bob has earned the right to have opinions, and unfortunately for us, he has quite a few of them.

The reality is that cats like Bob are why rescue matters.

Not every animal finds a home.

Not every animal is easy.

Some simply need a safe place to grow old, be comfortable, and be loved exactly as they are.

For more than a year, we've continued caring for animals like Bob while dealing with repeated building issues that have strained our resources and made planning for the future increasingly difficult.

Today, we're fighting to make sure animals like Bob continue to have that safe place.

🐾 Jimmy and Louie Update! 🐾

Remember these boys from the Bay Shore case?

There was a time when we weren't sure how they felt about people.

Now?

Our biggest problem is surviving the daily Jimmy and Louie greeting committee. 😆

The second someone sits down, personal space becomes a distant memory. They climb, wiggle, bounce, kiss, and generally make it very clear that attention belongs to them.

And honestly?

We'll take it.

These are the moments people don't always see in rescue. The goal isn't just finding homes. It's helping animals learn how to feel safe enough to be themselves.

For Jimmy and Louie, that means acting like giant puppies and treating every human they trust like a jungle gym.

The dogs currently in our care are often the ones who need a little more time, a little more patience, and a little more help.

But moments like this remind us why it matters.

🐾 Little Bit Update! 🐾

We got a visit from Little Bit today, and she is doing wonderfully in her foster home. ❤️

Like many puppies her age, she's currently in the middle of a growth spurt. Because of her unique neurological history, we're keeping a close eye on how she's moving as her body changes and develops.

The most interesting thing we're seeing right now is that Little Bit has started choosing to hop rather than walk more often. We suspect a lot of that may simply be related to her growth spurt... Her body is changing quickly, and sometimes puppies go through awkward phases while they figure out how all those growing legs are supposed to work together.

We'll be adding some different physical therapy exercises to help strengthen those growing muscles and improve coordination, and she'll be heading back for a veterinary recheck soon so we can continue monitoring her progress and making adjustments as needed.

The important thing is that she is happy, engaged, eating well, growing, and continuing to make progress.

What makes us smile is that Little Bit doesn't seem concerned in the slightest. She is busy being a puppy, exploring her world, enjoying her comfy beds, and soaking up all the love from her foster family.

A few months ago, we weren't sure what her future would look like.

Today, she's thriving.

Progress isn't always a straight line, especially for dogs like Little Bit. Sometimes it's a growth spurt, a new challenge, and then a leap forward. We're excited to see what the next few months bring for this little girl.

🐾 This is Sophia.
Sophia isn't the dog who rushes up to meet strangers.

She watches from a distance first.
Not because she's aggressive.
Not because she's difficult.
It is because Sophia likes to make sure you're safe before she gives you her heart.

When Sophia arrived, the world was a scary place. New people were scary. New sounds were scary. New experiences were scary. She needed time, patience, and a place where she could learn that life didn't have to be frightening.

Today, Sophia spends her afternoons stretched out on patio furniture, following her favorite people around, and quietly enjoying life.

She's still waiting for the right person to come along — someone willing to give her a little time to decide they're one of the good ones.
Once she does, she becomes your shadow.

For more than a year, we've been dealing with repeated roof leaks and building issues that have made it harder to do this work. We've repaired, relocated, adjusted, and kept moving forward because the animals still needed us.

Today, we have approximately two weeks to determine the best path forward for the animals in our care.

In the last year, we helped 37 animals find homes and provided more than 580 support, behavioral, and veterinary services to animals and families in our community.

We are not asking for help because the mission failed.
We are asking for help because it worked.

And animals like Sophia still need a place to heal, learn, and wait for their person.

George & Sophia ❤️
Sometimes the biggest victories don't look dramatic.
They look like this.

A dog who now feels comfortable enough to supervise every activity in the building.

A dog who has claimed an entire couch as her personal kingdom.

When George and Sophia arrived from the Bay Shore case, they were frightened, unsure of people, and trying to figure out whether the world was a safe place.

Today, they spend their days investigating snack rumors, monitoring volunteer activities, stealing couch space, and making sure absolutely nobody gets any privacy.

Healing doesn't always happen all at once.

Sometimes it happens one safe nap, one gentle touch, and one comfortable couch at a time.

We've seen a lot of comments asking why we didn't simply move, relocate the animals, or find another building.

The short answer is that animal rescue is rarely that simple.

Many of the dogs and cats currently in our care came to us because other rescues, shelters, or organizations did not have the space, resources, or ability to handle their medical or behavioral needs at the time. Through rehabilitation, many of those animals are now adoptable and thriving.

Finding immediate placement for dozens of animals—especially seniors, medical cases, and long-term residents—is incredibly difficult. Finding a new facility is equally hard.

This is Hugo. He's one of the reasons we're fighting so hard right now.

Many of the animals currently in our care came to us because other rescues, shelters, or organizations did not have the space, resources, or ability to handle their medical or behavioral needs.

And rehabilitation works.

In 2026 alone, we've helped 341 animals and families through support services, provided 120 behavioral services, delivered 117 veterinary services, and helped 34 dogs and cats move on to successful adoptions and placements.

From the Bay Shore hoarding case, we originally accepted 17 dogs. Only 5 remain in rehabilitation today.

From the Maine C**n case, we originally accepted 22 cats. Only 8 remain in care today.

Many of the others have already found loving homes.

Finding immediate placement for dozens of animals—especially seniors, medical cases, and long-term residents—is not something that happens overnight. Finding a new facility can take months.

Over the past year, we were repeatedly told repairs had been completed and issues addressed. Unfortunately, the water intrusion continued and there is still no permanent solution in place.

Today, we have approximately two weeks to determine the best path forward for the animals in our care.

We are not asking for help because the program failed.

We are asking for help because it works.

Animals have healed here.
Animals have learned to trust here.
Animals have been adopted from here.

Now we need help making sure the animals still in our care have the same opportunity.
