We are the "Go To" Board and Train facility when it comes to Psychiatric Service Dog Training, Aggression Rehabilitation & Behavior Modification. VHK-9 is a full-service, positive reinforcement K-9 training, aggression rehabilitation, and behavior modification board-and-train facility. We place strong emphasis on 21st-century training techniques that prioritize the dogs' physiological and psycholo

gical well-being at the core of our training and rehabilitation programs. At VHK-9, we strongly oppose any training devices such as choke collars, prong collars, or e-collars. Although these “quick fix” and/or “quick training” devices show short-term fast-track results, their long-term negative impacts on canines are obvious and well-known. Great lifetime training results are best achieved through a committed training regimen that centers on the dog’s well-being and ensures love and praise as the canine excels. To better accommodate all of our clients, we have relocated our world-class operations from Miami to the NE Florida area, close to St. Augustine, making it easily accessible for anyone seeking help for their canines. Augustine), each about 15 minutes from our facility, as well as two international airports (Orlando and Jacksonville), are merely 60 minutes away. VHK-9 offers pick-up and delivery to/from your location to/from our facility. This way we can ensure that the training and rehabilitation process of your beloved pet can easily be accommodated. At VHK-9, we understand that separating yourself from your “family member(s)” is a very emotional experience. While our world-class “A” rated reputation, as described by our past and present clients, and years of rehabilitation and training experience can provide a sense of ease to minimize your anxiety, we also offer video feeds of your canine while at VHK-9

🎓🐾 Last week, Dutton had the honor of walking the graduation stage with his handler, Adriana.

What makes this moment even more special is where Dutton’s journey began. Dutton came to us as a rescue. He was extremely shy, lacked confidence, and showed signs that suggested he had not been treated kindly before coming into our care. For a long time, he preferred to stay in the background and was unsure of the world around him.

Through patience, training, and a lot of love, Dutton slowly learned to trust again. The shy rescue dog who once struggled with confidence grew into an incredible service dog and trusted partner.

For the past several years, Dutton has attended school alongside Adriana, providing support, comfort, and confidence every step of the way. Together, they navigated the challenges of school and celebrated every success as a team.

Seeing Dutton walk across the graduation stage with Adriana last week was a powerful reminder of what second chances can accomplish. We could not be more proud of Adriana for all she has achieved, and we are incredibly proud of Dutton for the remarkable dog he has become.

From a frightened rescue dog to a service dog helping his person achieve her dreams—what an amazing journey.

Congratulations, Adriana and Dutton. We are so proud of you both. ❤️🎓🐾

Today is a very special day for Amara ❤️🐾

Amara was surrendered to us, at Van Hendrix K9 by a young girl who had bought her with the very first money she ever earned. Unfortunately, life took a very hard turn, and she found herself without a home, living out of her car with Amara until we were able to step in and help.

Despite everything she had been through, Amara came to us with the sweetest spirit. From day one, she was eager to please, fun to work with, and naturally engaged in training. She truly loved having a job and being by her person’s side.

Today, Amara graduates with K9s For Warriors in Texas, where she is beginning her next chapter changing a veteran’s life.

We are beyond proud of this girl and how far she has come. From uncertainty to purpose, this is why we do what we do. ❤️

Deep Pressure Therapy on a whole new level 😂🐶

DPT is a trained service dog task where the dog applies calming pressure to help reduce anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD symptoms, and emotional overload. The pressure can help regulate breathing, lower heart rate, and ground someone back into the moment.

And yes… some dogs believe if a little pressure helps, full body compression must work even better 😅❤️

Honestly, there’s no better weighted blanket than a dog who thinks your personal space is optional.

🔥 “Threshold Training: The Line Between Stability and Overwhelm” 🔥

🧠 Every psychiatric service dog has a limit, the point where stimulation becomes stress, and stress becomes dysfunction. This is known as the threshold.
At VHK 9, we don’t guess where that line is.
We identify it, respect it, and systematically expand it.
Threshold training is the process of exposing a PSD to increasing levels of environmental, emotional, and sensory input, without ever pushing the dog into overwhelm. Because once a dog crosses that line, learning shuts down and survival responses take over.
Signs a dog is approaching threshold:
-Subtle disengagement from handler
-Delayed response to known commands
-Increased scanning or fixation
Changes in breathing or muscle tension

The goal is not to “toughen up” the dog.
The goal is to build capacity safely.
We achieve this through:
-Controlled exposure (gradual increases in difficulty)
-Strategic retreat (stepping back before overload occurs)
-Reinforcement of neutrality under pressure
-Recovery protocols that reset the nervous system

When done correctly, threshold training creates a dog that can operate in environments that would overwhelm an unprepared animal; airports, hospitals, dense crowds, while remaining composed, responsive, and connected.
This is how resilience is built:
Not by pushing harder, but by progressing smarter.
⚡ Mind-Blowing Truth
If your PSD “suddenly stops listening,”
you’re not seeing disobedience, you’re seeing a threshold breach.

🧩 Core PSD Task Categories
Environmental Desensitization: -Expanding tolerance to real-world stimuli.
-Focus Retention: -Maintaining handler engagement under pressure
Stress Signal Detection: -Recognizing early signs of overload
Recovery & Reset Behaviors: -Bringing the nervous system back to baseline
