Stone Hollow Homestead

We are a small family homestead next to the Little Maquoketa River in the Midwest Driftless Region. Stone Hollow Gardens began in 2015.

Christopher and Emily Appelman moved into a windmill house nestled between two limestone ridges. The month after they moved in they broke ground, readying themselves for the garden to follow. A month and a half later they were already selling plant starters at the Dubuque Farmers Market. Since then they have become known as the local foragers and growers. Eight months out of the year they organica

lly farm, cultivate and forage mushrooms, and make jams/preserves with berries gathered from around their local area. Their cultivated mushrooms are grown outside on logs. This growing method enhances flavor and makes each mushroom variety seasonal. Outside of the season they offer dehydrated mushrooms. Stop by the Dubuque Farmer's Market and visit the Stone Hollow Gardens stand. Throughout the season stay updated weakly on what will be at their stand. Dubuque Farmer's Market is every Saturday, beginning the first weekend in May, from 7am to 12pm.

An Early week, Fast paced and always somewhat nervous 😬 Mayo trip….for check ups, scans and check ins…. made amazing with the company of Our not so little bird…Sparrow !!
a few small finds but all good news friends…..😉🎉👊 and a good day was had…

Spent the rest of the week with Sparrow & Mae Mae Moon….puddle jumping, Wild crafting, wandering timber and gathering the goods 🍄‍🟫, Pulling w**ds and sowing seeds at the food forest….garden work….tying up tomatoes…as well as working up mushrooms, bottling 🍄‍🟫 seasonings and stormy ⛈️ Friday evening market prep by firelight and flashlight at the
cottage…… when the lights went out😳……

A long but beautiful week in and out of the rain hugging the girls, staying cozy by the fire and more than a bit of rainy day market prep for this morning’s Dubuque Farmers' Market…..

An amazing Dubuque Farmers' Market with the littles early Saturday, A beautiful family grill out Sunday and An early rise and on the road before the sun woke a team of 2 today….our oldest Sparrow and myself are
On our way back up to Mayo in Rochester for an all day roster of appointments, check ups, check ins and scans for “The Papa” …..😉🤞👊

Little bird wanted to see what one of these post radiation days looked like for the papa…. She’s super excited and nervous just like me…😉❤️‍🩹👊 as to be expected…

Grateful to have the company of our oldest daughter on this beautiful ride north and Family with me on such an important trip…… if you know me, you know I’m gonna make it fun ! But also keeping our fingers crossed for the best of the best results…..🤞….. so far so good and a good start to a very very nervous day!

Happy fourth-ish of July y’all… a day late, but better late than never…..been busy as all get out getting ready for Market and having a boatload
of fun with the family……😉🤪🎆😳👊…..

A Busy, busy but beautiful and amazing 4th of July week and weekend in the books…..Time well spent and a few beautiful memories made with family and loves…..🎆GRATEFUL🎆…..

From garden wrangling at the cottage and flipping crops and a little w**d wrangling at the food forest over on Southern to gathering the goods 🍄‍🟫 Timber🌲side…..Golden Oyster and a Touch of Golden🍄‍🟫Chanterelle mushrooms…. Come early for these beauties…..😉🍄‍🟫👊…. Managing the girls, getting in some of that Grateful All important and much loved holiday Time With Mama❤️‍🩹Bear and navigating quite a big life in between things…. All the while, getting ready for another trip to Mayo and a day of all day scans and appointments in Rochester on Monday….. wish us luck….. Always crazy those trips to Mayo 😳🤞👊!!

An amazing but busy Independence Day week indeed….

Even managed A trip over the river and through the woods where for a bit of Swim & Pool Time with the Littles at the Territories after market on Saturday, Grateful Family Beach☀️Time up at Governor Dodge on Monday, Helped out Mama Bear down at The Earthen Loaf to free up a little holiday time For her and the girls as well as much needed and grateful hangout time….lent a hand bagging & labeling up her Beyond Organic Creations….A whole lot of ”the Good Stuff”….. for this morning’s market….😉🤷‍♂️🥖👊…..

…And even with all that we still fit in a little everyday Pool time & little friend time for the littles 🤷‍♂️, berry picking, market prep, garden works and potting up a few garden 🪴 goodies for this mornings Dubuque Farmers' Market in between things….

An amazing weekend hanging out with the girls and a busy soggy bottomed week dodging rain in between things….

An after market trip to The Territories for a not so quick and much needed aftermarket swim, a little trip to Massey for family time and hunting rocks with the little’s and mama bear 😉❤️‍🩹👊(always grateful for that), berry picking, flipping crops and picking peas in the food forest and an every other day roll spent walking timber side dodging rain and gathering wild eats for this week’s Dubuque Farmers' Market

A busy week And just like that it’s Thursday morning……. And almost Time for weekend fun with the girls 🥰 always looking forward to that.

A Beautiful weekend and a busy week …. A busy busy market with two of my three favorite 😍 ladies, Hot days, Massey time, Grateful Water play and family time here at the cottage, Weeding as well as flipping a couple crops real quick like and picked our first round of beyond Sweet snow peas At our beginning food forest ( Sparrow & Esmae approved😍), more than a Little bit of wild crafting & timber time with a really good friend (appreciate you more than you know), Mucho Market prep in between all of it and because “ Home is where the heart is “ our daily all important devotion to finding our way back home….. a somewhat hard but beautifully busy week and a weekend well spent!

We’ll take it 😉❤️‍🩹👊

An Every week Dubuque Farmers' Market w/very helpful helpers, an epic after market pride 🌈 day spent with loves and tribe, a little bit of summer berry pick’n with my favorite not so little loves, many trails wandered and an abundance of tasty mushrooms 🍄‍🟫 gathered, very grateful everyday water play here at the cottage and Maybe we even Managed The procurement of a smallish sailboat and the navigation of said ⛵️ item back to the cottage in pieces……. 😉😳👊

All of this and market prep in between things a busy week for sure and Father’s Day only a couple days away……. Oh my 🥹🙌🎉 not perfect but we’re Gonna call that a good start to our summer vacation and we’ll take it……grateful indeed!! Things are almost back to where they should be……. Almost but not quite and we’ll take that too……for now !

Big words…..Father’s Day……a day this papa almost didn’t get to see again…….

An amazingly fun weekend fitting in a bit of swimming and a wee bit of time well spent (even if awkward at times😉👊) with my favorite 3 ladies and An industrious and beyond busy week spent in every day preparation for today’s market……And just like that we’re back to market day Up bright & early, loaded up and rolling in homestead (and Massey 😉) heavy this morning for Dubuque Farmers' Market…..

We’ve Been out Gathering the goods 🍄‍🟫 in ridiculous abundance, harvesting veggies, and w**ding rows at the food forest…. So many radishes picked we’ll be bringing a few extras to Market…..digging up, cleaning and sorting out beyond pretty Mississippi agates and river stones for a Sparrow and Papa market endeavor this very morning (Sparrow is beyond excited) , Mixing up the medicine and a full Restocking of our tasty Medicinal Tea’s as well as 🍄‍🟫Seasoning Blends😉, Sculpting out more growing room as well as planting veggies watermelon, and sweet potatoes back at the cottage and a whole Lotta back-and-forth 🚗🔥🔥 while running plants here and there 😵‍💫 in between things…
