Stone Hollow Homestead

Stone Hollow Homestead We are a small family homestead next to the Little Maquoketa River in the Midwest Driftless Region. Stone Hollow Gardens began in 2015.

Christopher and Emily Appelman moved into a windmill house nestled between two limestone ridges. The month after they moved in they broke ground, readying themselves for the garden to follow. A month and a half later they were already selling plant starters at the Dubuque Farmers Market. Since then they have become known as the local foragers and growers. Eight months out of the year they organica

lly farm, cultivate and forage mushrooms, and make jams/preserves with berries gathered from around their local area. Their cultivated mushrooms are grown outside on logs. This growing method enhances flavor and makes each mushroom variety seasonal. Outside of the season they offer dehydrated mushrooms. Stop by the Dubuque Farmer's Market and visit the Stone Hollow Gardens stand. Throughout the season stay updated weakly on what will be at their stand. Dubuque Farmer's Market is every Saturday, beginning the first weekend in May, from 7am to 12pm.

A somewhat chilly but gorgeous Friday spent in a busy busy navigation of School, Timber, Trail, Cottage….. an early morning vineyard run after the girls got on the bus….a somewhat precarious mid afternoon harvest of Delicious Maitake as well as chicken of the woods was made, a quick picking of mixed beans was made at the food forest and Sparrow whipped up a fresh batch of the finest Pink lemonade this side of the Mississippi for this morning’s Dubuque Farmers' Market….. an early bedtime and story time for my girls, a careful sorting….boxing….stacking and loading of the goods a quick nap and 💥 It’s Saturday morning….. coffees made the girls, sleeping bags are loaded & The goods are Packed, Stacked And headed your way….🚗🔥😉🍄‍🟫🍎🚗🔥🔥🫐🍋🍇🪴🍐🍏👊🚗🔥

A beautiful weekend and week was had wrapping up summer With my Littles before those colder temperatures rolled in….. an amazingly beautiful weekend spent paddle boarding And honing our Sandcastle skills up at Governor Dodge State Park…… beautiful memories, and a beyond good time was had while wrapping up one of the best summers my girls and I have ever spent together……

From Timber to Vineyard A busy week and a whole Lotta picking went on…… Fresh picked Bartlett pears and an overwhelming harvest of Concord Grapes rolling in from the vineyard…. An amazing but slightly cloudy Sunday Family Fun Day spent up at good O’l Governor Dodge State Park Paddling, trail wandering, wild crafting, and building sand castles To our ❤️‍🩹’s content….. got a whole Lotta fun and adventure in the day before the 1st day at a new school for my amazing girls….. much fun was had and a few beautiful memories made!

First day of school went off without a hitch, the girls are starting to feel comfy as well as making many new friends 😉🥹👊…..Grateful…..a busy week Spent in an every other day back-and-forth between the Vineyard, Timber, Trail and Cottage Gathering the goods….Picking Grapes🍇Pears🍐and Wild Elderberry in delicious abundance out at the vineyard….. A hefty gathering of Chicken of🍄‍🟫the Woods…. A touch of golden🍄‍🟫oyster…. And abundance of wild elderberry procured timber side…. A bit of cherry tomato and a hefty harvest of Fresh picked🫐Huckleberries…tidied, weighed and stashed for tomorrow mornings Dubuque Farmers' Market… an impromptu sick day for Mae Mae On Thursday, a little natural medicine, some much needed timber time for my moonchild and an amazing afternoon well spent just the two of us….a wee bit of fun….
And an early night for my not so little Littles…..

An early rise and this here post written….Now it’s time to bake a few breakfast biscuits, wake the girls get em ready & off to Table Mound…..Then try to use this day wisely…… much to do before the girls get out of school….. A busy Thursday wandering timber and Trail in search of tasty wild treats 😉🍄‍🟫👊 as well as an early afternoon trip out to the Vineyard To check on Pears, Elderberries as well as Sparrow & Mae Mae’s favorite the Concords 🍇 and get in a little picking with my not so little, Littles…… a hot afternoon, picking fruit and a grateful journey back to the cottage to sort, weigh and stash today’s catch for tomorrow mornings Dubuque Farmers' Market As well as giving Sparrow a little hand for this weeks tasty ice cold Creation….. “Little Birds” whipping up a bit of her 100% Organically sourced Pink🍋Lemonade With a medicinal wild crafted elderberry twist…… knowing her it’ll be absolutely delicious!

The girls went down early and I’m up a wee bit to late writing this post gonna schedule it this time …… try not to judge😉😳👊 full-time Papa over here and this Papa’s gotta wake his girls up at 6am for orientation at their new school….. the girls couldn’t be more excited….. me too…… proud of these girls 😉❤️‍🩹👊…… my girls are getting big way too quick 🥹

A busy Dubuque Farmers' Market and an amazing but slightly rainy weekend well spent with Sparrow, Mae Mae and a few good friends 🏕️🔥🏊‍♀️🛶 up at Governor Dodge State Park….. finding ways to have fun, adventure and Wildcraft in and out of the rain…… an amazing and memorable weekend was had……a late return on Monday eve ……. A Tuesday and Wednesday playing market catch-up…..a hurried daily navigation of timber, Trail, the green in between as well as several varieties of tasty mushrooms gathered!

An amazing weekend, Busy week and back to Thursday….. two days from market…. And a busy two days to go…..Sparrow’s decided to make her divine pink lemonade with a twist for this week’s DFM, Grabbing a few organic ingredients for that tasty creation and headed out to the Vineyard for an early morning🍎🍐🍏picking and to check
them grapes 🤞🍇!
