Most dog owners think their dog is ignoring them when they say “no.”

The truth?

Your dog isn’t ignoring you.

The word “no” is meaningless unless a meaning has been attached to it in your dog’s mind.

If your dog hears “no” 50 times a day with no consequence, no redirection, and no follow-through, it becomes background noise.

Imagine someone speaking a language you don’t understand and getting frustrated when you don’t respond. That’s exactly what happens when we expect a dog to understand a word we’ve never properly taught. 👀

Dogs learn through associations!

If “no” is going to mean something, it has to consistently predict an outcome. Whether that’s stopping a behavior, redirecting to a different behavior, or applying a consequence, the dog must learn that the word actually means something.

The goal isn’t to repeat “no” louder.

The goal is to make the word matter.

When communication becomes clear, obedience becomes much easier. 💯

Here’s why crate training is one of the best things you can do for your dog:

It solves potty training almost instantly.
Dogs naturally won’t p*e or p**p where they sleep, but only if the crate is the right size. Too big and they’ll just use a corner. Get it right and house training sp*eds up dramatically.

It gives them their own space.
Think of it like a baby’s crib or a kid’s bedroom. It’s not a punishment, it’s their place. A dog with no safe space is a dog that never fully decompresses.

It keeps them out of trouble.
Most dogs don’t know how to self-soothe, especially puppies. That “mayhem” people complain about, the chewing, the anxiety, the destruction, a crate fixes that before it even starts. Most people come to training after the damage is done. A crate would’ve prevented it.

It’s not cruel. Here’s the reality.
You put a baby in a crib. You put a toddler in a playpen. Not because you don’t love them, because you do. A crate gives a dog boundaries, safety, and a place to rest. What’s actually cruel is a dog that never learns to settle.

And when an emergency hits, you’ll be glad you did this.
A vet visit. A natural disaster. An evacuation. That is not the moment you want to introduce the crate for the first time. A dog that’s crate trained can handle those situations calmly. A dog that’s not? That’s a crisis on top of a crisis.
