We have a new boy at the farm! Congrats to Molly Doyle Hess on her purchase of Monty, a 4-year-old KWPN who will be her future show hunter/equitation partner! Shout outs to seller Samantha Folley and breeder Stoney Hill Stables in NY. Trainer Cindy Lytle and Molly’s twin Aimee May will help the pair succeed. We have no doubt! 🍾🏆

We’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a remembrance of our beloved Irish lad, Diamond Junction aka Colin — owned by Cathy Hare. He was sired by Colin Diamond of the famous King of Diamond’s line and imported in 2003. He was everything an Irish draught should be, often being shown by Janelle Stewart Williams. He passed in 2021 and we still miss him. Show us your Irish horses and Slainte to all! 🍀🍀

Welcome to our new, fancy pony — Rusty. Big thanks to Donna K. Citrin. Rusty was created by sculptor Keith Bradley, now out of Florida. We thought you’d enjoy the whimsy and originality as much as we do! Plus, he’s a very easy keeper!

The weather might be spring-like but it’s still winter! And winter riding brings challenges. We asked Cindy to share some of her winter riding tips:
• Most horses handle cold better than we do. Most with a full winter coat are comfortable down to 20 degrees. But that doesn’t mean we ride them as if it’s a balmy summer day. Warming up is very important, especially for older horses.
• Plan for at least 10 minutes of walking to start, alternating between marching forward and relaxing. Then do the same at the trot. Serpentines and changes of direction will help supple their necks and backs. Try doing canter circles in each corner of the ring to keep horses bending.
• As for the rider, dress in layers, of course. Do some rider stretches before getting on and some on-the-horse exercises like windmill arms at the walk, posting at the walk and two point.
• For both of you, think about getting out of the ring and going for a walk in a field, especially if it has a hill.
• And, finally, dismount on a mounting block to save your feet! Winter may slow down some of your progress, but there’s no reason to hold off riding until March!
