With spring upon us the turtles are emerging.
As I thoroughly agree with this poster on helping our turtles to safety I must point out a couple things.

1. Not all turtles are aquatic. Please do not put the turtle in the water. Just put them on the side they were traveling towards. If they belong in water they will go straight to it on their own.

2. I do not encourage people to pick up snapping turtles unless you are truly familiar with them. They jump, they snap and they can move their heads back very far. So please be careful.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your local permitted wildlife rehabber for guidance.
Rehabbers are not only available for rehabilitation, we are also here for education. ❤️

PSA: This horse belongs to a friend of Hollie. The owner is a veterinarian and a very knowledgeable horsewoman.
Many horse owners let their horses out during the night for various reasons (no judgement here). This is just to caution as to what can happen.
Her horses are not left out at night due to concern over wildlife, accidents, etc. However, this horse is a bit of a Houdini and opened her stall to her paddock and allowed herself outside.
Obviously and apparently something attacked her through the night. It must have attacked while she was sleeping because there were no bites on her leg.
There were numerous puncture wounds all over her body and a wound on her face.
The animal is unknown. One would think if it was coyote it would be missing "chunks" of muscle, but, if the horse was thrashing it still could be a coyote. But was it a wild cat? Birds of prey? It will never be known. (owner now installing cameras outside of barn).
Be vigilant when/if you allow horses out at night. Coyotes, etc are everywhere. Personally on our farm we have seen coyotes, bear, bobcat, fox, various raptors along with "expected" c***s.
MAKE SURE YOUR HORSES ARE VACCINATED FOR RABIES. If this horse hadn't been vaccinated it would need to be in quarantine and at huge risk for contracting this fatal disease. The vaccine is a small price to pay for safety of you and your horse.
This beautiful lady will be fine. Her "mom" treated all of her wounds and she is vaccinated.

Salmon poisoning in cats:
Salmon poisoning in cats that is caused by a parasite and rickettsial organism can be fatal if left untreated and is characterized by symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy.
The parasite is called Nanophyetus salmincola, which carries a rickettsial organism called Neorickettsia helminthoeca.
Cats can become infected by eating raw or under cooked salmon that contains the parasite.
Prompt veterinary care is paramount - it can be fatal if untreated.
Prevention: Avoid feeding raw or under cooked salmon to cats. A general rule of thumb is to not feed raw fish to cats at all.
NOTE: Salmon poisoning is not the same as salmonella which is a also a bacteria that affects foods and causes food poisoning.

Our very own Brendan Ash, who has worked with us all his summers and breaks for the past few years is finishing up his Senior year at Findlay. We just found out today…. (Drum roll please)
Brendan was accepted into the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois!! He will behgin the four (more) years there this fall.
Brendan has worked tirelessly towards this goal, never with a plan B, because he was determined to be a veterinarian. We look so forward to the future Dr. Ash completing his studies and making an impact on the world!
We are so proud of you Brendan!

We have a huge number of these droppers that we do not use, we send with oral dosing syringes instead. If anyone wants these, a few or all (good size box), please stop in the clinic for them. We had offered them to Wildlife Works and they didn’t want them. All unused in plastic.

Walter, and the rest of us at Ridgeview Veterinary Clinic, just wanted to take a moment and say thanks. It is our pleasure to take care of you creatures, great and small. Thank you for trusting with the care of your furry (or feathered) family members. We are so grateful to those of you who drive .5 miles to us or those of you who travel from another state to see us (yes, we have patients from other states). Your loyalty is deeply appreciated. Just wanted you all to know, you ARE appreciated.
