☀️🐾 Dog Days of Summer: Keep Your Pets Safe! 🐾☀️

Summer is here, and warmer temperatures mean it’s time to take a few extra precautions for your furry friends.

✔️ Exercise during the cooler parts of the day (early morning or evening)
✔️ Always provide plenty of fresh water
✔️ Make sure your pet has access to shade when outdoors
✔️ Protect sensitive skin with pet-safe sunscreen when appropriate
✔️ Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle
✔️ Watch out for hot pavement—it can burn paws in seconds!

Know the signs of heat stroke: excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness, disorientation, or collapse. If you suspect heat stroke, move your pet to a cool area and seek veterinary care immediately.

Stay safe, stay cool, and enjoy summer adventures with your pets! ☀️🐶💙

✨Meet Viki✨

We’re excited to welcome Viki, our Registered Veterinary Technician, to The Neighborhood Vets team!
Viki has been in veterinary medicine since 2018 and became a Registered Veterinary Technician in 2022 after graduating from the Community College of Denver Veterinary Technology Program. She has experience in general practice, emergency medicine, and exotic animal care, and loves treating every patient like her own.

When she’s not at the clinic, you’ll find her reading (preferably on a cruise ship 🚢), enjoying Broadway shows 🎭, or spending time with her pets: Chloe the orange tabby, Edgar and Sebastian the guinea pigs, and Willow, her energetic German Shorthaired Pointer mix. 🐾

Help us give Viki a warm welcome!

🐾 Case Spotlight: Juniper 🐾

Juniper, a 2.5-year-old Husky mix, came to see us for intermittent jaw chattering. On exam, we discovered an ulcerated lesion on her soft palate. Biopsies obtained under sedation confirmed a diagnosis of canine eosinophilic granuloma complex (EGC), an inflammatory condition often associated with allergies and genetics.

Juniper was started on steroids and a prescription diet, and we are happy to report that her ulcers are healing well and she is feeling great! 💛

Meet Gandalf 🐾✨

This stunning 8-month-old Maine C**n came in to see us and quickly discovered the real highlight of the appointment: Churu treats 😹💛

Safe to say he was a very brave (and very snack-motivated) patient. We’re pretty sure he’d schedule his next visit just for another tube of Churu.

West Highland White Terriers or “Westies” are very smart, affectionate, and cute dogs—Poppy and Josie are perfect examples of these traits🐶

But did you know that Westies are predisposed to developing certain liver diseases? Copper associated hepatitis, idiopathic hepatitis, and liver shunts are some of the liver diseases we see more commonly in this breed.

While dogs with these conditions can become ill, the good news is we have ways to treat these conditions! Routine lab work can help screen for any early changes like increasing liver values that are associated with these diseases.

Bistro 🐾✨

This handsome 15-year-young gentleman came in for his wellness exam alongside his sister, Gwillibone—who preferred to stay out of the spotlight 📸

Bistro is a great example of how small habits make a big difference. His owners help support both cats’ dental health by incorporating t/d kibble into their routine 🦷💙

Aging gracefully and flashing that healthy smile—we’re here for it.

George 🐶✨

This 4.5-year-old Jack Russell Terrier stopped by for a broken toenail—and still managed to look as cute as ever 💛

Broken nails can be painful and messy, but with a little TLC (and maybe a few extra treats), pups like George are back on their paws in no time 🐾

Heartworm disease is serious—but prevention is simple.

Spread by mosquitoes, heartworms can affect both dogs and cats, causing lasting damage to the heart and lungs. Here in Colorado, mosquitoes don’t stick to a strict “season,” which means year-round prevention is key.

Protection is easy when you stay consistent:
• Monthly oral preventatives 💊
• Once yearly injectable options 💉
• Annual testing to make sure your pet stays protected 🩺

Not sure what’s best for your pet? We’re happy to help you choose a plan that fits your routine.

Preventing heartworm disease is far easier—and safer—than treating it ❤️

✨ Meet Maya, our new veterinary assistant!

Maya has been in vet med since 2016 and is certified in low-stress handling.

Originally from southern Texas, she now spends her weekends exploring the mountains with her dog, Laurel. When she’s not at the clinic, she enjoys reading, making art, and spending time with her two cats, Bazil and Juniper (plus her many fish tanks!).

We’re so happy to have her on our team — be sure to say hi at your next visit!
