The Delmar Animal Hospital is closed today in observance of Memorial Day (Monday, May 25th). We will be back to our normal business hours (M-F 8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm) tomorrow (Tuesday, May 26th). If your pet is having a medical emergency while we are out of office or outside of our office hours please contact our local urgent care or ERs:

It’s that time of year again, the black flies are out and snacking on us and our pets. The good news is although the bite marks look concerning they are relatively harmless and heal on their own.

The flies typically target The ears, neck, head, and abdomen. The local reactions on your pet’s skin are redness, itching, and wheals (a raised, itchy spot) at the bite site. Treatment is often unnecessary. The skin reaction usually goes away in 24 – 48 hours.

Steps you can take to reduce fly bites on your pet includes using over the counter insect repellant. Make sure that it is pet safe. Never use ones that contain DEET or picaridin, as these chemicals are toxic to dogs.
Spray the insect repellant on a cloth and wipe down the areas that are most prone to being bitten by the flies, like the belly.

You can also adjust the amount of time your pets are outdoors during the morning and evening hours when black flies are most active.

The second best place for nature to be is with a professional!
As baby season blooms, please refrain from taking animals out of their habitat.
If you find an animal you think may be in distress, please call the North Country Wild Care Hotline (518-964-6740).
The excellent volunteers there will help you determine if the animal needs to be rescued and connect you with a local licensed rehabilitator.
