😛👅 Tongue Out Tuesday! 👅😛

Meet Teddy, the incredible 3-year-old mixed breed who has been part of our rehab family since 2024. 🐶💙

Teddy’s story is one of true resilience. Following a suspected spinal cord injury, he was left abandoned and his hindlimbs bound behind him awkwardly 💔. But he never let his circumstances define him. From day one, he has been full of energy, excitement, and pure joy, completely unaware of any limitations. 💫

Since his rescue, Teddy has undergone bilateral hindlimb amputations, and he continues to thrive with his same exuberant personality. Now cruising around in his custom cart, he’s living life to the fullest—tongue out, tail wagging, and ready for anything! 💪🐾

Teddy reminds us every day what strength, spirit, and determination truly look like. We are so honored to be part of his journey. 💙

🔧 Surgery Saturday 🔧

Elbow dysplasia in dogs is a complex developmental condition that affects the elbow joint, often involving issues like fragmented bone pieces, abnormal joint alignment, or cartilage damage. Surgical correction depends on the specific form and severity, but the overall goal is to reduce pain, improve joint function, and slow arthritis progression. Surgical approaches to treat elbow dysplasia include:

1) Arthroscopy 📸
The most common and least invasive technique. A small camera (arthroscope) is inserted into the joint. The surgeon then removes loose bone or cartilage fragments (like in fragmented coronoid process) and cleans up damaged tissue. 🧼

2) Open Joint Surgery 🪡
Used when lesions are large or hard to access with arthroscopy. The joint is opened to remove abnormal bone fragments or reattach pieces (like an ununited anconeal process) using screws or pins. ️‍🔩

3) Osteotomy Procedures (Bone Cutting/Realignment) ️‍✂️
Used when abnormal bone growth causes joint mismatch. The surgeon cuts and repositions bones to improve alignment. ⚙️

🦴 Condition Corner 🦴

Elbow dysplasia refers to a group of developmental abnormalities that cause instability in the elbow joint. The abnormal wear and instability leads to osteoarthritis, where protective cartilage in the joint breaks down. This results in painful bone-on-bone contact, inflammation, and loss of motion. ⚙️📉

In dysplastic elbows, the growth plates fail to line up properly. This causes incongruity between the radius, ulna and humerus bones which make up the joint. Ligaments may also become stretched or loose. 🦴💥

Signs of elbow problems:
- Lameness or holding one leg up
- Difficulty laying down or getting up
- Reluctance to jump or play
- Pain when the elbow is extended or flexed

While elbow dysplasia can’t be reversed, an active rehabilitation program allows dogs to stay comfortable and maintain function for as long as possible. If your dog shows signs of elbow problems, be sure to consult your veterinarian and a canine rehabilitation therapist. There are many ways to improve quality of life for dogs affected by these common elbow conditions. 💪🐶

😛👅 Tongue Out Tuesday! 👅😛

Meet Chicco, the adorable 4-year-old mixed breed who’s been part of the rehab family since 2023! 🐶💙 With his signature tongue-out smile, he knows exactly how to win everyone over.

Chicco is being treated for chronic Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), which we’re managing conservatively, and he continues to do a great job staying active and comfortable with his rehab plan. 💪🐾

And his favorite part of coming in? Getting showered with compliments from all his rehab friends—because let’s be honest…he is that cute! 😍
